I'm seeing a few people say the terrain boots pack.
I don't particularly care about cosmetics.

You can use vehicles/mechs/the jetpack to deal with snow just fine, probably only bother with the terrain boots if you play a bunch and want to get in to the super high end of the difficulty scale.

Useful but no fun:
Ranger pack: Gives you a UAV that lets you find samples faster, will vastly improve how quickly you can upgrade your gear.
Terrain specialist pack: literally just snow boots and an outfit

Useful in a way that no base content is:
Demolitionist Pack/Vehicles Pack: Satchel charges and the anti-tank mech let you destroy nuke objectives without calling down a nuke. The other options in both DLCs are fun but nothing special (though the 2 non-mech vehicles in the vehicles pack are both hilariously hard to use)
Entrenched Pack: Barbed wire is often very good. Directional shield is very good at lower difficulties and still useful on higher ones.

Very bad:
Pistols pack: You can take a better pistol instead of a perk! This is never worth it.

Everything else falls in to a pattern of like one useful weapon/ordinance that's usually not notably better than base game stuff + one or two gimmick weapons/ordinances that are usually pretty fun but not very useful.

Holy poo poo that's nuts. I kinda was interested in Helldivers for cross-play with my mate who has a PS4/5, but that doesn't work with Steam so I lost interest.

But it's a 15 dollar game with 35 bucks of DLC, jesus christ. That's a really hideous trend I see in modern games, stuff like Paradox titles (NEVER buy their stuff!) or Total Warhammer games. Things where the game is priced at the premium price range for their genre, but then doubles or triples that in DLC that's aimed at being exploitative.

Eh, the game + all DLC is 20 bux on sale which is a fair price for a game with a very specific niche (co-op pandemonium). There's a reason most games in similar niches now just do big free updates every once in a while instead of piece-meal DLC though, it's terrible loving optics and makes it harder to get friends in to the game cause they see it and have your extremely fair reaction lmao

Absolutely IMO, it is one of the few games that really nails the rally feel with proper trail breaking etc. Going very fast and probably sideways. The stages are pre-set rather than procgen, in 8 (?) locations. I only really stopped playing it after the tracks started to get old.

That said I'm not a motorsport nerd so maybe something key is missing. I always heard it was very fidelitous though.

Hitman 3 probably would have charted too if it was on Steam. Lot of big studio single player focus games came out, just lots of them skipped steam.

Speaking of assassin games Cruelty Squad should have charted :( I know it looks like total poo poo at first but if you endure a couple levels til it clicks it’s one of the best indie games ever.

Yes it is if you liked the first. Totally worth 10€. I think I found it a bit harder as 1 but delivering great rally feeling which the series has been straying away from lately

Thanks for the Helldivers DLC tips, they're dirt cheap on indie gala right now so I'll pick a few up.

The game was released in ~2015, and I think they've just been adding cheap DLC ever since; not exactly an exploitative cash grab, and it's co-op so not pay-to-win.
Also you can just grab the base game and go nuts.

That said, you're totally right about the Total Warhammer stuff, didn't they have blood as a paid DLC pack?

I'd say it's worth it and with the GOTY you get the tracks from 1 too. I play it on ps4 with a controller and love it everytime I get into the groove.

Depending on how much you want to spend, the reinforcement mega bundle pack on steam is a bigger discount at $12.49 for all the DLC. But Otherwise ranger pack for UAV, demo pack for C4, terrain pack for easier movement in snow and swamps.

Paradox games, only the host needs the DLC in multiplayer and they go on sale frequently, they also represent extremely long support for the game. The main thing people dislike about the Paradox approach actually stems from EU4 specifically, and that's how they'll completely change certain mechanics and hide some extremely useful or necessary feature under some DLC, and thankfully no other Paradox game is quite as bad for that. Total War, everyone gets the benefits of the DLC unless you want to play as those specific factions that are added. Helldivers, it's all a bunch of neat poo poo that you may want if you enjoy the game, but nothing necessary.

Hollandia posted:

it's like three bucks for a few events, dismemberment and highly customisable blood splatter, and it was free if you'd bought the blood pack for warhammer 1, and it's all part of a trick CA uses in order to give the base game a lower age rating

are we going to complain that train sim's dlc is exploitative now because good gosh look at the big number or can we recognise now that not all content is necessary

I saw some 3d isometric-looking bullet hell game on the Steam sale posted by Wario64 to cheapassgamer, but I remember the name or find the tweet. Looked interesting. It's pretty fun too, although there's too few mission types.

Not a $60 game, maybe $30, but definitely good for $15-20. I played it on Game Pass at launch for a dollar.

Hoping it gets a sequel actually.

It's not, like, Assault Android Cactus is it? Just taking a swing here. It's 3D with an isometric view and has bullet hell qualities to it, and also a seemingly random name. Wario64's account has also tweeted about it in the last ~year even though it came out years ago.

No problem. I haven't played it for a few years, but I remember having a lot of fun with it (it looks like I have ~30 hours in it). Nice selection of characters to play as and not especially hard (unless you try to go for long uninterrupted combos)--I'd say it's definitely worth $5 if that kind of game is up your alley.

EDIT: It also has a local co-op option, which is a lot of fun if you're looking for decent games that can be played with friends on a couch. Otherwise, I remember there being mutator/modifier options (that I might have needed to unlock, if I remember correctly) that allow you to add 1-3 additional AI partners to help out if you're feeling lonely. The AI's not the greatest but it does well enough to help carry some weight at higher difficulties.

ubisoft quit releasing new games on steam around mid-2019, they only release on their own launcher and the epic store currently

it's not the first time a big publisher has dropped out of steam, the last time it happened valve ended up conceding some of their sales cut to win them back

Fueled by Satan

I skipped FC5 and FC6 bummed me out. From how I understand it they really pared down all the mechanics from 5 that made that game feel bloated to make more of a streamlined experience (no more skill tree, hunting was simplified to trading in animal meat for store credit, etc) but I think I was 5 hours in and had the pack I wanted with the upgrades I wanted and most of the "best" guns in the game which were headshot machines so I felt godlike from the get-go. I appreciated getting to the point and removing some of that tedium but at the same time it took away some of those fun grinds that kept me going so I fell off it pretty quickly. It's not a bad game by any means, it's got some of the best far cry action in these last few games and the wing suit owns it just felt very lightweight and more sandboxey this time around.
