Is following British Politics a hobby? As someone who's followed everything in the last decade and stayed mostly sane, no (and the sidebar doesn't count politics as a hobby but don't tell the mods). But I wouldn't want to pass on telling this story, and the drama in UK politics can be glorious. Where else in the world could a Prime Minister be faced with allegations about a relationship with a pig's head, where someone's political ambitions be dashed by a bacon sandwich, and where there could be an MP called Eric Pickles?

This drama is focuses on a handful of individuals in the most turbulent of times deciding to make their mark on the world, a cautionary tale about false pride & ambition, a modern Icarus. I
present to you, the saga of Change UK.

120 is an elite, nerdy way of saying "LOL!" See 5.

LOL means "Laughing out loud" and is a common acronym used in chatting everywhere.

LOL (or lol), written in 1337 is 101.
101 in binary is equal to 5 in decimal.
The factorial of five (5!) is 120.

So, the factorial of LOL (5) is 120. LOL! = 120

I think the piece raises a very valid point that there's basically been no room granted to even discuss the idea since the 80s.

quote:

For my part, I was most surprised not by the antipathy but by the surprise that greeted our immodest proposal, in all but a few tiny pockets of the left. In the 19th century, as well as the sex-liberationist 1970s, to call for abolishing the family in favor of the classless poly-maternal commune was a common anticapitalist practice. ... The extent of contemporary socialists’ institutional amnesia about this controversy, via the quashing of the radical imagination in the ’80s, is something I had underestimated.

In terms of a provocative statement it's a bit like "Defund The Police" in that the right gets much more leeway to actually defund the police and actually split up families and attack the right to a family as defined by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights than the left does to even discuss the idea that the current conception of 'the police' or 'the family' might be anything other than an unassailable moral good.

I guess it always ebbs and flows as action and reaction, the anarchists of the 19th century opposing the hereditary privileges of the high status families, the sex-liberationists opposing the Ward Cleaver Jr. suburban fantasy of the 60s, and so on, and the end of history instead tried the reformist tactic of expanding what a family could be against the bulwark of moral majority Thatcherism-Reaganism defined 'family values'.

Yeah I know what you mean but you could say the same about "Police abolition". The point is to challenge the narrative around the notion of what a nuclear family is and the alternative needn't (and probably shouldn't) involve the state. Plus "Nanny state" has negative connotations of its own.

Oh yeah Azul is good. It's on BoardGameArena.com, official version (though you need to have at least one person with a subscription at like £20/year or something to create a table) or for free on https://azee.mattle.online/welcome

I've been playing lots of online board games over the pandemic - used to go to a physical meetup every week but that obviously had to stop.

If they told you that there's no backdating before the date the decision was made they'll try and claim that this counts as them notifying you that they consider the claim date to be whenever they feel like + that you have a right to appeal, and if they didn't they might just lie and say they did, but that's not reaaaaaaaaally compliant with their duties so it all ends up as a dice roll on what sort of judge you get in the upper tribunal

yeh there's no form of appeal process for this one, I would have to get an expensive lawyer and sue the government and I don't have the money or the time for it.

I do think the key to modern sanity is basically staying entirely off social media. Twitter is just so all encompassing and time consuming and full of a mix of both the utterly banal and the harmful.

I keep my consumption almost entirely within the walls of SA and my wife has a moratorium on discussing it ever as she has huge mental health gremlins, so me reminding her of any of it can cause a pretty hurtful spiral. Especially given the hopelessness of being a queer lefty from texas.

My sister and I are both energised by having a good rant about lovely politicians being lovely, but when i cottoned onto it all coming down to capitalism she started worrying I'd gone too far and started dropping hints to my family that I was becoming a scary person (ah yes having no time for centrist bullshit and being upset about Corbyn getting bodied by the media... clearly a step away from becoming violent) it felt a bit like projection but did cause me to take a step back and chill out some.

I did realise that while a good rant might help some, others really do let themselves spiral into a bad place. I made a point to redirect most conversations with her away from politics to entirely positive topics and she's actually improved a lot.

I still am quite angry, but SA is a fantastic outlet for that.

In other news had board game night with my respiratory doctor friends who all work on a covid ward last night, They're all pretty convinced we're heading for an enormous shitshow of a wave by the second week of january and the one guy on call had his phone going off the hook all night.

The number of hospitalisations/serious cases is rising by orders of magnitude again round here at least (Yorkshire)

Any thoughts on how this looming energy crisis is going to play out? Seems like the government and the energy companies are going to play chicken with each other while people worry about how the gently caress we’re going to be able to afford anything.

A popular strike on paying energy bills seems like A Very Good Idea, but mobilising people to do that on a mass scale feels pretty impossible (unless people end up not paying them simply because they can’t)

Where's my cow?

Is that my cow?

No it isn't, but it still tramples my bloody lavender.
I lucked out recently and got some excellent mh self help training that was part of my CFS/ME occupational therapy treatments-

A lot of it boiled down to assessing your immediate emotional/physical state and thinking on how it affects things for you, then making changes based on that to help yourself. Often I find that just the little brief disconnect is enough- for example- "I'm feeling angry, I'm tweeting about poo poo that's making me even angrier to people I loving hate, not to mention I'm also dehydrated/sore/tired" then I feel pretty daft about what I was doing, fix the things as best I can and magically a few minutes later I'm feeling much better.

seems somewhat obvious/trite when compressed into a paragraph but a couple of hours of being educated on methods/encouraged to apply them has made a much bigger difference for me than my skeptical brain ever would have expected

Didn't the government already deal with it months ago by lifting regulations on price fixing?

The Tory line today is that theyve already announced a 4bn package of tax cuts, then explicitly call the change in UC taper rate a 2bn tax cut, so the randian Ubermensch in no 11 is probably going to do nothing unless billionaires want some free poo poo

Ashworth said labour's solution would be an annual vat free period on household gas during winter, and that they'd cancel the ni rise. Neither of which make a dent and both of which are begging for the papers to start asking them how they plan to pay for things again.

Personally I'm still waiting for SSE to get back to me and explain how they think I used 22,000kwh of energy between September and December, why their online estimate of my previous meter readings is several thousand units lower than my paper estimates and the meter readings they lost (along with records of my previous payments), and why the first I heard of this was when they emailed me at 7:50pm on December 23rd to say I'd defaulted on payment for an account that was in credit the week after I closed it.

I know the answers, they've used the estimates from my partner's account before I took over the energy but only have payments from the third account I had to setup to deal with their previous failed account merger, but I really want their explanation. I'd have just emailed them something like "lol no, come back when you have something resembling an enforceable bill" but they still owe me money.

Enjoy your tea...

So here’s how my COVID experience is going so far if anyone wants to know what it’s like to catch it when you’re double jabbed but haven’t had the booster yet.

Day 1 - Serious flu-like aches and pains over my whole body and no energy. Moving is incredibly difficult and I have a mild headache. No appetite at all and have to force myself to eat small morsels. There is also a periodic cough and I feel extremely cold most of the time.

Day 2 - Considerably more energy and more desire to eat, but still far less than normal. Aches and pains have largely gone. Headache has increased in intensity and now have nasal congestion along with the coughing increasing in intensity. I also feel considerably dehydrated regardless of how much water I drink, and a painful sore throat has begun to manifest. Unfortunately I had a random bout of insomnia overnight and got less than two hours sleep. I am now alternating between feeling incredibly hot and incredibly cold.

Day 3 (today) - The aches and pains in my limbs are gone but I can feel inflammation around my lungs and ribs. The headache has dulled but the nasal congestion is still present. The sore throat is now very painful and coughing is now quite painful, but infrequent. Unfortunately I am now suffering from fainting/dizzy spells which ended up with me collapsing on the floor when I went to use the bathroom, and had to have my partner physically support me while I relieved myself. It is unclear how much of this is down to having almost no sleep and have spent the rest of the morning sleeping which brings us to the time of writing this, so I’ll see how I get on.
