I came pretty close to getting Twitch partner in the last couple years (had the numbers consistently, regularly over a hundred concurrent viewers, but was always just slightly below the bar) and in retrospect letting the whole thing go before I actually got there was the best thing I could have done. I wasn't trying to do it for a living, either. COVID meant I never left the house and I'm a decent live producer (part of my day job is producing software developer conferences) so I started doing fighting game tournaments and people liked them so it started growing. Some of the bigger names in Tekken started commentating and playing in the brackets I ran, so they started getting bigger. Then, suddenly, because I was willing to say such bold and controversial things like "transphobes are not welcome in my events" I was getting my own share of harassment from shitheads and from the better quarters of the community I was suddenly getting asked to weigh in on this or that bullshit from this or that idiot in the community, like I was suddenly responsible for everybody who played Tekken. And I've got under 2,000 followers on Twitter and Twitch -- I cannot fathom the shitstorm folks with ten or a hundred times that following get all the time, unendingly.

Even though I wasn't trying to do it for a living and even though I was dreading almost every event I ran? The numbers kept going up, and that check mark would be really cool, right? My mood directly reflected whether my numbers were better than other people's, even those of people I considered friends (actual friends--and they've quit running events too). It wasn't why me and my SO of three years broke up, but it was a hell of a contributing factor, having my mood obviously keyed on how many people (not "did any", but how many) showed up to watch. If I'd gotten partner it probably would have harmed my job (which is way less work for a way more predictable paycheck) and would have stapled my self-worth to the algorithm on ways I don't know if I could have walked back from.

My events did some pretty cool stuff in there too. Through like six charity events we raised about $25K for a bunch of good causes. But everything else melted my loving brain and it took months to get myself right. People I know are still trying to make partner. They dismiss me when I say the above. They think it's what they want. the weirdest thing to me is how aimless it seems. I started running events because it was COVID and we couldn't do offline Tekken tournaments. These folks say they want to "create content". Not say something, or make art, or even entertain. They want to Create Content, as if that's an end into itself. I don't get it.

EDIT: I use per-channel youtube feeds because I don't trust the algorithmically-generated subscription tracking youtube does, because they can't even list all of my subscriptions correctly on the website and unless you do five different things it's very possible you won't even get all of the content that someone posts?
Anyway, it turns out that in order for that to work, I have to not be an idiot and forget to check the log files of the programs I use to scrape those rss feeds, so I'm like a month behind on Shaun videos because my RSS feeds stopped working at some point? Great.
Anyway, I had a point about him being a character, because he wasn't even remotely leftist so if that's what he's been branding himself as he's been lying to himself and/or everyone else.

Yeah, I thought Dore was exaggerating for effect at first as well, when I found out that he was genuine I stopped paying attention to him and after watching that Shaun video I'm glad I did.

LGBTQ, any of the specific sexuality or pronoun ones like only Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, They/Them, weirdly enough ones like Furry also seem to do it, those and more are obviously targeted by shitheels.

Like I stream on and off for fun, have no kind of major or even really minor following, but the moment I ever put a tag like those on, I got the couple of lame 'hate raids' I ever got of like forty spambots showing up.

Also big tip, I was lucky because I knew about it before I got any of those, but if you stream and ever get those spam raids, don't actually click on any of them and especially do not go to their actual channel pages even though I don't know why you would anyway, because a whole lot of them are also exploiting certain addons that basically let them also function as IP grabbers, which of course they'll use to try and DDOS and similar stupid poo poo, even if it takes longer, do the manual "/ban [name]" function. Maybe that part of them was remedied since I last looked a while back, but somehow I doubt it.

A comparison isn't claiming that your suffering is equal to though, and I think anyone saying that she was comparing herself directly to Fall didn't read what she was saying. Twitter is full of immediate, bad faith readings where even mentioning yourself and Fall in the same breath is proof positive that in fact the mob was right about you, regardless of the context you're trying to explore. None of these conversations are framed around what she actually said though, just the nerve that a wealthy white woman would mention herself alongside someone who is Trans.

I have no skin in the Ellis game, but the best move is to always double down. gently caress me, no gently caress you. Whatever I said to annoy you I wish I said it earlier. That sort of thing. If someone wants to say you only chose the commonly used and context appropriate "squint" because you're talking to someone who's Asian then that can't be your problem. You want a real discussion about something then message me, all this quote tweeting mess is just peacocking.

I guess it comes down to what type of content you consume - I don't think I subscribe to anyone who produces more than a single video per week at maximum output, and if I started I'd probably unsubscribe from them.
It also depends on what you do with it.

I like it when there's effort put in, and I'm not convinced it's possible to produce content with effort daily without experiencing almost immediate burnout.
At the same time, it's not a guarentee that because someone takes longer than a week to produce something, that it'll be good - so it's a fine balance.

If then, you're the type of person to just move onto the next bit of content, which is totally valid and in no way an issue, then that's that.
However, if you're like me seeing something on any given subject is likely to lead to a deep-dive into that subject to learn more about it, because even the most well-produced videos tend to only be a tiny part of the iceberg.

the new internet is more of a nightmare than the old internet because it’s been corporatized and everything is driven by algorithms and targeted content. Social media apps outright refuse to show you your feed in chronological order now, they are formatted to be addictive and maximize engagement, whether it’s by making you scroll thrice as much to find a post or by actively shoving people you hate in front of you.

Not that I disagree with any of that, but there are still ways to circumvent the timeline fuckery, the algorithm and all the other things, because ultimately the code is still executed on your computer, so until some point in the future where a full cryptographically-based chain of trust can be rooted in hardware and be used to enforce the ability to not install add-ons or things like tampermonkey, the corporations will never really be able to have the kind of control they obviously want.

When I mentioned the issues with the new internet last, I also forgot to mention the one thing that all of these issues rely on - which is that they all require the internet to be centralized to a few services.
The grass-roots federation efforts aren't without their share of problems (especially when it's not always clear if there's a company behind them, of if it truly is grass-roots), but it's at least always an option to use if one wants to - and since it relies on the fundamental design of the internet (ie. being able to route around anyone (but nation-states) trying to destroy it), it's unlikely to go away until the internet (as we recognize it today) goes away.

this thread isn’t bad because it is some exemplar in lovely culture (as someone noted there are multiple threads in cspam alone that could easily claim that title) but ironically because it’s too much like twitter. not in the sense that it’s toxic or whatever but because by dumping every person who somewhat fits “online reviewer” into one thread it’s basically just a more curated twitter feed. did you recently watch a video and want to talk about it? you can do that here! oh yeah though just pray that there’s no slapfights over say zach snyder or some esoteric video game disagreement happening for the 77th time that’ll take up 10 pages and completely drown out all other conversation. in creating a singular megathread for every person who makes stuff on youtube one of the greatest parts of forums, having bespoke areas for focused conversations, is completely abandoned for what? not cluttering one of the slower subforums on SA?
