Well, everyone lies. To themselves as well as others. It becomes notable if frequent/pathological or particularly heinous, as this is. Perhaps there is hosed up justification in their head "Well, I know that's what she really thinks, so it's okay", or, they are just vicious pieces of poo poo who know it's wrong and don't care.

But how does anyone go out and make an argument founded on lies without realizing "hmm, if I need to knowingly tell lies to convince people, MAYBE I'M WRONG?"

Maybe I have fighting game brain and can't comprehend not wanting to win "fair", IDK.

A large part of why these people take shipping so seriously is because they’ve tied so much of their own perception of morality into fiction. If you like a character who did a bad thing, then they take it as a sign that you support that bad thing in real life, because as far as they’re concerned what media you consume and how you consume it defines you as a person.

It’s not unique to that subculture though. I mean it’s basically another version of the whole “playing rpgs with demons in them means you’re secretly a Satanist” moral panic from the 90s. It’s just taken on a new form for a new age.

Karloff's point above about people lying to themselves is salient.

If you dig into the original Jenny thread where she/her fans uncover the photoshopped tweets there's a telling one where someone took a tweet about her being approached by a "large man asking for money" and changed the word "large" to "black" and "money" to "the time". I can very easily see someone looking at the original tweet and interpreting what she really meant as like "well clearly she meant the guy who scared her was black but didn't want to look racist, and she was exaggerating to gain sympathy so he was probably doing something more innocent". So in that case, changing the words just uncovered the true meaning, like she almost said exactly that anyway, so why not just make it more explicit to people too slow to pick up on that subtlety?

From there it's easy to justify more extreme changes: since it's been proven she's a racist you just have to interpret the things she's actually thinking about when she types her tweets.

Oh, yeah. I mean the actual strafing bit wasn't so bad in context, but that line was...not good. Especially when 'shoot them before they shoot you' would have worked better there rather then getting dropped almost offhandedly later in the episode. You'd have to rewrite the scene, granted.

Honestly, I feel like there were only like a few changes to that last episode and it wouldn't have been so bad. The lion's share of the scenes/clips that people wheeled out on Twitter were from that ep. The hell of it is that I feel like the series would have gotten better if they'd been able to take constructive criticism going forward. And more importantly we'd get some more Seatbelts music. :argh:

The whole argument over using the word "squint" in Ellis' Raya thread was a prime example of that too. I used to get mad at people doing that poo poo, now I just feel pity because you have to be miserable to interpret poo poo in such an obtuse way just so you can justify not liking someone.

the main thing about the pro/anti-shipping thing is that people entrenched in that little subculture war can't even fathom that anyone might have a more broad outsiders opinion on it. it's just assumed if you're gonna say anything about shipping that you should know every sin each side has committed and that you've chosen a clan. you can't say you're bothered by the "all shipping allowed no matter how gross" argument without being told that 'your side' bullied a kid into suicide.

(which, btw, is some real "BLM sets cities on fire" poo poo. even if a couple of assholes did that, why does that fall on everyone)

no sooner did sarah z's video go up than tumblr went into overdrive talking about what a monster she was for not picking THEIR side, and how she's somehow responsible for some teen getting bullied by... not her or anyone in her circles

That reminds me of how back when Hbomberguy did his RWBY video, he called the ship between the two sister characters "loving disgusting" and some of those incest shippers were a bit appalled at first, but the whole drama around it evaporated with no lingering attempts to go after him. I wonder why the fandom shippers are way more raring to go after Sarah Z and Jenny for way milder/made up things...

I mean, it was enough to offend the people invested in that ship but the momentum died out almost immediately afterward. People started projecting shipping positions onto Sarah Z before she made that video. I think it started with some mild "lol wtf" tweets about the Hannibal meat-pink-triangle pin? Maybe something even more vague before? And Jenny's made what are obvious jokes about doing things "for the Reylos" without even weighing in on who she'd pair Rey off with.

I'm sure it's not exclusively gender, might also be something with branding since Jenny and Sarah are more I don't know, fandom-adjacent? It's just strange on multiple levels how the rage there is sustained on so little.
