Please love me
I think that was Myth II, where if you installed the game in a place it wasn’t expecting then uninstalling it would brick your computer: https://minimaxir.com/2013/06/working-as-intended/

One of the big EVE updates had a file named boot.ini and it wasn't particularly sane about checking if it was it's own one or uh..the one that NT-kernel Windows used.

EVE had the boot.ini issue but I don't think it was the first one to do it.

Pools of Radiance, I think, was another one that deleted system files on uninstall

I think Pools of Radiance went one step further than Myth 2 in it's routine to delete all folder contents. Where Myth 2 was content to delete everything in the root the main exe was, due to a mixed up reference I think PoR went one file path upward and then did the same thing. So like best case you lose all your installed games if you were well organized, or else fairly commonly you lost your entire C drive.

Steam on Linux did this as well. If you moved the install folder it could attempt to delete the entire system instead.

Along similar (but not identical) lines is Wing Commander. They were nearing the end of development, and one of the things they had to deal with was a crash that would only occur when you went to quit the game. The practical upshot of this is that when you quit, your DOS prompt would show an error message. Pretty harmless, but ugly. The fix was to build the game as normal, then go into the binary and replace the error message text with "Thank you for playing Wing Commander!"

IIRC the error was in EMM386, which was the main memory manager for DOS at the time, and was harmless other than the warning, but lol at hacking an essential exe for something like that.

Also, again I may be wrong, but the Sonic 3D blast thing wasn't preemptive, was it? There was actually just a straight up bug that crashed at startup and they were like "gently caress, uhhhh... error handling code is now a stage select"

The Sonic 3D thing was basically a way to get it through cert. One of the requirements was "never ever crashes no matter what we do to it" and they weren't 100% confident the game was legitimately crash free so they just made it so anything that would crash the console goes to the level select screen instead (which also has the convenient property of allowing them to completely reset the game state and clear whatever problem caused the error in the first place), which is a pass as far as certification is concerned.

Level select as a crash handler makes extra sense as the least new effort. They will have a level select utility for testing the game, and a tester who just crashed the game probably wants to use it to reproduce or move on to another step. No reason to turn that off, cert or not.

Here's a video about that level select from one of the developers of Sonic 3D. It was, in fact, just a way to get it though certification. Not to cover any specific bugs, but more as a precaution in case something unforeseen happened. One of Sega's requirements was that a game should be able to run for days and never crash.

I'm gonna assume that the first/second place indicator is done just with the car's center of mass (which is easy to keep track of and fairly easy to compare to other centers of mass), while first place is done by seeing which car touches the finish line first. I'm willing to accept that this is a bug, but I'd hesitate to call it a "glitch"...which I recognize is making a pretty damned fine distinction :v:

As for the actual behavior shown, it's physically implausible, but so is basically everything in games, so seems fine to me!

if the car on top was slightly "ahead" of the one on the bottom, then clearly it crossed the finish line first.
