You know how fans wondered about what the heck the Clone Wars were for literally decades until Lucas finally revealed it in all its underwhelming glory. Or folks writing literally pages of theorycrafting on a character in Dark Souls known only from a single item's one line mention of them.

One thing I kept thinking when I read the books for the first time was "I wish he was writing in this depth about Robert's Rebellion instead of the War of the Five Kings, the Rebellion sounds a lot more interesting." Of course, now I know that if he had written about the Rebellion in that much depth, it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting.

This is what's so good about Lotr which the Gurm is a big fan of. Tolkien does some great world building by leaving lots of mysteries in there where he gives you just enough to make you curious and then lets you imagine.

One brief paragraph of Gandalf mentioning the Nameless Things that are so ancient and found so deep in the underbelly of the Earth that even Sauron, one of the Ainur who is as old as the universe itself, knows them not while Gandalf himself does not have the heart to even begin to describe them has inspired more theory crafting and discussion than anything GRRM put into his giant lore book.

Not to mention a Thing such as Ungoliant where the Elves of the Eldar Days writing the history of the universe admit that they have no idea what it is.

Sauron was a maiar like Gandalf. Melkor was the ainur that birthed all the hosed up things in the world and got ungoliant to suck the life out of the trees.

The Maiar were, like the Valar, among the Ainur which were the very first things in the universe to spring into existence from Eru Illuvatar’s thoughts. The Maiar, all of them, are precisely as old as all of the Valar which all come into being at the exact same time.

And Melkor did not create Ungoliant and like all beings other than presumably Eru Illuvatar didn’t know what it was or where it came from because it was not among the Ainur. The best in universe guess was it was a creature of the void but that’s just what the Elves gave as a theory. The fan theories of what it is are endless.

right I always mix up ainur and valar for some reason. I thought melkor was the one that put the dissonance in the song and strayed from Eru Illuvatar's plan and thats where all the weird hosed up stuff came from. I need to reread that mythos its been a while.

Tolkien did it right, dying 19 years after publishing LotR and leaving the Silmarilion straight unfinished. He completed the story he wanted in three books, gave us a bunch of bullshit arcana that raised as many questions as they answered, then dipped.

Well, :goonsay: Tolkien’s larger legendarium was not bullshit arcana at all it was actually the main body of his entire work. The Lord of the Rings specifically was ironically the publisher friendly part he wrote to keep the train going.

Anyway diehard GRRM fans legitimately believe that the man has spent the years since the early 90s writing absolutely copious amounts of notes, drafts, story treatments, various short snippets of lore, and tons of other goodies that is all saved somewhere and can be compiled together by someone put in charge of his estate when he dies in a few years. That’s what Tolkien did for literally 60 years after all.

However GRRM has done absolutely none of these things, what he has is what has been released and as far as the times when he rewrote chapters it was not Tolkien like where he was concerned with gradually shaping a story over many years to better fit the evolving ideas of his larger legendarium but because he has absolutely no ability to focus and has to keep writing the same exact POV chapter like an obsessive maniac. We have a giant collection of letters Tolkien wrote to both fans and colleagues responding to questions about his stories and writing processes with elaborate explanations of plot and character development choices he made stretching back to the 1920s, GRRM would not be able to answer a basic Reddit AMA with anything satisfying.

I mean, it's art from a publisher, so doesn't necessarily have to be anything in the book. But I'd guess it's main vampire dude. And yeah protag was a fat riverboat captain or something.

This avatar was paid for by the Silent Majority.
I remember when GRRM was talking about how Dany needed to be aged up in the show so that her essential sex scenes could be kept in, almost like it was an unfortunate thing that had to happen. Of course he had to mention that Tasmin's sex scenes were hot so she'd be a good candidate to play his 12 year old sex slave character.

http://grrm.livejournal.com/103138.html

GRRM in 2009 posted:

It's no secret that HBO's Dany will start out older than Dany does in the book; that was a change that had to be made, if we wanted to keep the sex scenes, and David and Dan and I were all agreed that the sex scenes were essential. Tamzin can play much younger than her actual age (as she does when playing Katheryn) and her sex scenes on THE TUDORS were as hot as anything I've ever seen on TV.

Apparently the comic has only covered 71 days worth of time in the now 22 years of its existence. So it is currently late-September, 2000 in-universe. Fred Gallagher could maintain the same story pace for the rest of his life (he's in his 50s now, FYI) and the comic would never make it to July 2001 (the in-universe one year anniversary of the story's beginning), let alone 9/11.
