Pull some rando low-level comedian with almost zero experience in media to suddenly host his own talk show. Which turns out to be terrible, so it only lasts a few years, and then he disappears back into the ether with almost no work since. But sadly, this is Canada, and if the right exec hears you tell a marginally funny knock-knock joke, you can be catapulted to "fame" and "fortune" and given your own show or movie here. Which is what I'm betting happened; some exec from the comedy channel saw a set of his at Yuk-Yuks, which made his wife laugh a bit, and that was enough for him to be put at the top of the list for potential hosts for a talk show concept they had going.

Don't besmirch Canadian late-night talk show hosts. Bullard was the relatable everyman, who you expected to finish each show and go back to his real job behind the wheel of a TTC bus. D'Angelo is the man we aspire to be, a Renaissance man who was captain of the canned juice industry and effortlessly pivoted to become a master entertainer and filmmaker. And both of them still pale in comparison to Ed. Who is a sock.

Colbert is incredibly boring more than anything, the only joke of his I even remember was when he called Trump 'Putin's cock holster' and then defended it as actually woke and cool because reasons. The rest is just a stream of gray generic celeb interviews and the most embarrassing political starfucking like having Pelosi and Schumer do cute little bits with him. I think he in general managed to call less people 'shemales' and make less weird racist/pro-war jokes than Stewart so he's got that going for him but they equally fail the 'for all your lib performative bullshit will you ever actually aggressively interrogate the right wing figures you bring onto your show to suck off and give a platform to?' test. All in all a big wash.

SomethingAwful, Colbert, and everything about "performative irony" culture in the 00s played a very real role in normalizing a whole bunch of fringe, extremist poo poo. It probably would have boiled over elsewhere anyway, but still.

also Colbert Report, like most hyper specific political humor, aged like milk but they keep trying to make another version every so often on Comedy Central. They forget that things have progressed so far since, though, that you can't just have a generic smug white guy say 'bad thing? Actually it's good, triggered libs????' Like, you have to have them be an actual blood and soil fascist but none of the libs in the Daily Show clique want to do that (and to be fair it'd probably suck rear end)

Right, right, and what are the chances you'll ask whatever soft-ball questions we write for you for whichever scumbag we put on your show to boost ratings... a hundred percent? Good man, sign on the dotted line and we're in business" Recall that the most famous Jimmy Fallon story is that Nicole Kidman came over to his house DTF and he asked her to play video games with him instead.
