Hey thread. I just got myself an LG 55 inch CX for Christmas. I have a real hankering to buy the 4K UHD of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (mostly because after watching the Witcher and Wheel of Time, I really want to rematch LoTR.) Are they worth it? Is there any other UHD's that are must owns?

After watching it on Tuesday I’m going to say The Thing is a must own UHD. I almost didn’t buy it because I’m really pleased with how my Shout Factory blu looks, but I did because it’s The Thing. The only downside is the spacecraft is more obviously a hand sketch than ever, but I can totally live with that for how excellent the goopey creatures, explosions and flamethrowers look.

The question about best UHDs comes up fairly often. At this point I would say just think of your favorite movies, see if they’re on UHD, and double-check a review to make sure it’s not one of the few dud releases. Older movies shot on film look great, new movies look great, most releases look great. Some movies aren’t worth the upgrade from a Blu-Ray but I think all of them are from DVD (even the dreaded Terminator 2).

Annihilation is one of my fave modern UHD’s. Parasite looks amazing as well. Alien is a fantastic UHD as well.

Every year around the holidays I rewatch LOTR, and this year I finished my home theater so it was a real treat to start the Fellowship UHD tonight (it's 20th anniversary no less). It's still just so loving good.

I never saw the Blu-Rays and it’s been ages since I watched my DVDs, but I didn’t notice anything jarring. Everything looks “correct” and fits together. They restored the original matte painting for the vehicle flying off a cliff in Raiders; from what I saw the BR had a very distracting digital replacement of it for some bizarre reason. Crystal Skull looks awful but that’s not the fault of the UHD.
