I rarely flinch at stuff I see on tv, but that surgery on the open cheek was gross. Incidentally, the scene in the opening with the pool party got me even more, just because it was so sudden and visceral.

That's a good term for the Arrow-esque extensive flashbacks that introduce drama which just happens to be thematically relevant to the events occurring in parallel in the present day.
