Yeah, I know there was also a Nick Kroll interview that he did for Colbert back before it launched. From memory, they set out to make an intensely gross and crass show about their experiences with puberty and gently caress around with it, loosely based around the idea that these were the videos/shows that they wished that they'd seen in health class. Then they realized while writing it that a shitload of kids would watch it so maybe they should try not to gently caress it up.

So that's how you get a show with a subplot about a kid impregnating his pillow also have a critically well-received episode that's just explaining what Planned Parenthood really is.

It's weird and I kind of like it. But it's also one that I wouldn't really recommend hard to anyone. Either it clicks or you bounce off of it.

Heck they make a joke at one point that the only reason they can get away with the poo poo they do is because it's a gross ugly looking cartoon

I know that they say that there's a reason for how ugly it is, but like 90% of adult cartoons are already super ugly so it doesn't stand out. It's like they're worried that looking nice at all will ruin their vaunted maturity.

Supposedly ever since Family Guy was revived and became a massive hit there's a common belief among network executives that adult oriented animation shouldn't have appealing designs or good animation and that most of the humor should come from the dialogue

Apparently before it got picked up by The Hub and became a more kid friendly show Dan Vs would use a set of "decoy designs" that were more in line with that sort of "knockoff Family Guy" aesthetic to be more appealing to network executives at pitch meetings

I thought Big Mouth was ugly on purpose to discourage porn, given the shows subject matter. Not that that’s ever actually stopped internet artists before.

A lot of animation styles come and go in fads like that, partly because of imitators and partly because that's just the zeitgeist artists and animators are working with.

Seconded, it's really excellent in its own way. There are some downright beautiful animation bits.

When I say that what I mean is that the characters all look like grotesque little trolls that make me uncomfortable to look at. I couldn’t imagine emotionally relating to any of them because I literally do not want to be looking at them.

Yeah, I don't see it -- and I don't understand why this show, particularly, gets so much flack for it.

I think the reason it gets so much flack is because it's popular. I mean, I don't watch it, but clearly a lot of people are because it keeps getting made and Netflix puts a lot of advertising on it.

Baby, we’re goons. That poo poo never stopped. Show’s alright. Totally get people taking issue with the designs as I had the exact same problem and bounced off the show because I couldn’t stand the style. That said, I sat down a gave it a couple of episodes and it’s enjoyable. I haven’t liked the last couple of seasons as much, but the writing is still pretty snappy.

Yeah, middle school and puberty were a hellish nightmare scape of shame and confusion and I’m happy letting Big Mouth potentially be the one big blind spot in my animation viewing because watching cartoons is one of my favorite things to do, but I’ve never watched a show where I hated the art style before and there’s simply too much good TV to suffer through TV that isn’t blowing your mind.

I didn't like the art style at first glance, but after a couple of episodes I was completely used to it, sometimes you just need a bit of familiarity.

Finished up Inside Job today; it's real good. I agree with folks who say it takes a little bit of time to find its footing, but by that I personally felt it was like partway through episode two or three before I was grooving on it. The first episode has a lot of expository character and world introduction stuff to get through that isn't handled in an especially novel or interesting way, but after that it really did hit a sweet spot for me between -- well, Rick & Morty and Gravity Falls. I think it's different enough from each to stand on its own merits. It also feels like one of those shows where all of the topical referency humor aims specifically at my age and demographic, so you know, take that boomers. I don't think I've gotten a harder laugh out of a blatant the reference-is-the-joke joke than in episode three when the lizard people tout one of their celebratory achievements as getting K. Rool into Smash.

What does it say about my standards that I think both shows look fine? Also I've enjoyed watching both a decent amount.

My hot take: Jay and Mathew are the best characters on Big Mouth, excited to see the shenanigans they get up to next season now that they're dating.

I already have a crass and rude show about children who act like adults, it’s called South Park, and I’ve never once thought to myself while watching South Park “man I sure wish all these children were hornier! This show would really pop off if the kids were really trying to gently caress!”

This argument feels a bit puritanical. The Big Mouth characters aren't literal kids.

That seems suspiciously close to the “it’s not a perverted anime for creeps, she’s actually a 1,000 year old dragon!” line of thinking.

I really don’t think anyone who watches or likes that show is a pervert or a creep, I just know that I personally am not even remotely interested in a show about children and teens dealing with sex and hormones. I had a very weird, confusing queer puberty and I wouldn’t spend one more second of my life dwelling on it or reflecting on it if I had to, so a show like Big Mouth seems like a wide miss for me personally.

In general I don’t subscribe to moralism based on the content someone consumes, I know stuff like Big Mouth and Euphoria is popular with lots of people but just seems completely outside of my wheelhouse.

Hey! Me too!

But yeah, Big Mouth is "What if South Park provided in depth lessons on sexual education, body positivity, LGBT issues, and maintaining good mental health?" And that sort of tonally disjointed edutainment isn't going to work for everyone.

Doctor_Fruitbat

I'm the exact opposite, I barely noticed puberty or took any interest in my own body let alone other people's, so part of the reason I watch Big Mouth is because I'm constantly wondering how much is being exaggerated for cartoon effect and how much are actual feelings that I was presumably supposed to be having at the time.

Bigmouth is kinda sad, It feels like it has two sets of writers.

It feels like the bones of the episodes and the big set piece jokes are written by a team that is legitimately good and funny and insightful. Then it feels like they have some frat boys come in and fill in the quick moment to moment jokes and it sucks.

Like so many episodes are some big insightful funny joke about sexuality or growing up or mental illness or some other big difficult topic and the core of the show handles it really well. Then like, the second to second throw away dialog jokes are like 90% lazy trashy garbage. Like they will have a difficult episode about someone coming to terms with their sexuality or something that is really well written then like a bunch of low quality gay jokes thrown in the middle.
