My local Lego store had a bunch of new sets in - while I missed City of Lanterns I was able to grab the new minifigs and the butthole tiger. That cat is a delightful model.

I'm just gonna throw this out there to see if it's worthwhile: do any of you have any interest in the Lego programmable stuff? That huge lot of Lego I got last Summer that was mostly this whole family's ninjago/starwars/friends stuff, turned out to have the 31313 Mindstorms EV3 set and the 17101 Boost Creative Toolbox, which are interesting but I don't have the inclination to dump a bunch of time into a new hobby just to make a Johnny5 knock-off wave at me or whatever they do. Both sets are missing instructions and close to complete. I've logged the few parts I'm missing, and I don't need enough parts to warrant a bricklink order to complete them. They seem expensive on ebay but I'd rather just let them go to a goon for less, so I can make an SAmart post if anyone cares. Otherwise I can ebay these eventually once my stupid county stops spreading omicron so fast that I don't want to go in a postal office.

Remember when those people were buying Titanic VHS tapes and editing out the titties and then reselling them for a markup to good Christian families? Well I’m doing the same thing with the butthole tiger. Contact me if you’d like a wholesome LEGO build for you and your childrens without the taint of anatomically correct animal pornography.

You will also need to provide people with two 1x2 curved wedges, in any colour other than pink, because the cat also has nipples poking thru its belly fur

Do you think they'd want them with no instructions and missing pieces, or should I wait until my next bricklink order to try to complete the pieces and still have no instructions?

In both of those cases, there are PDFs of the instructions on Lego's website (31313 and 17101).

I'm rebuilding Assembly Square right now and I just finished the new modular, and it's amusing how much the bag situation has changed over a few years.

Assembly Square: 4,002 pieces, bags numbered 1 thru 6
Boutique Hotel: 3,066 pieces, bags numbered 1 thru 14

In Bags 5 of Assembly Square, you build two entire floors of a building, plus its roof.

Sorry for the terrible photo, just wanted to snap a quick pic of these together before I put 'em up on the shelves.

The three modulars I own! They actually have a unifying theme, too: these three, and only these three, all include white croissants, so I've been calling them the White Croissant Trilogy.

Boutique Hotel is stellar, y'all. It's so dense and detailed. Over 3,000 pieces in a 32x32 building is wild. The geometry used to achieve the angled sections is absolutely perfect - like, there are zero gaps in any of the flooring because of the mirrored triangle technique they used. The room detailing is amazing, too - there are no weak points on the interior decor, unlike my previous favorite, Parisian Restaurant, which had an admittedly plain 2nd floor. The architecture is just so unlike any other modular. The art gallery is fantastic, and I'm glad they crammed so many works in there. It would have felt disappointing with just two or three. My partner Bun really enjoyed all the little references and callouts, and even the silly little character blurbs throughout the instruction manual. Although I like my Easter eggs subtle, Bun really appreciated having the references explained, since they are not acquainted with 15 years of niche LEGO subtheme history for some reason.

Is it perfect? No, nothing is. On the exterior, where the angled wall meets the left side straight wall, there's a bit of a gap where you can see the various colored plates and bricks that come together to form the structure. It's not a big deal at all, and mentioning it is a nitpick, but it feels necessary to say because there's little else to complain about. Some high points instead: the staircase in the lobby with its fancy railing, which feels extra deluxe with tiled steps. The large bed on the top floor. The sconces on the ground level. The entirety of the outdoor bar patio thing. The big sofa. Every individual bit of wrought iron detailing, all of which is done differently. Galidor. God, I love it all. This thing slaps.

edit: I will say that the instruction manual lore callouts/blurbs get pretty fuckin' tenuous, such as "the receptionist is friends with the lieutenant from the police station," and I feel like they are used to replace actual storytelling, which is absent in this set. There are no meta plots, like the police station's breakout, the bank's money laundering op, or the detective's office's mystery. There are no setpiece vignettes either, like the windows being washed in the Grand Emporium, the proposal at Parisian Restaurant, or the movie premier at Palace Cinema. I guess the espresso cart is something. Good thing that art gallery is there, because it is jam packed with charm. The rest of the model is tremendously beautiful and impressive, but not necessarily charming. Which is a shame! Charm goes a long way. It's why Detective's Office is so beloved, despite being kind of architecturally bland.

'66 Batmobiles anyone?

The tiny one is a 2x6 true advent calendar scale attempt. I like it, it reads as a Batmobile to me even at the tiny size.

The '66 car, like the '89 one is also a bit longer and wider than a regular car though. I decided it should be 3 studs wide at advent scale, and so I've made one of those that is currently about 9 studs long. Not sure if I like how I've done the fins (same problem I had with '89') but this is the best I've managed after a few hours today.

Thoughts?

I‘m building the assembly square and I‘m on the second floor and already on my second set of 1x2 bricks flat out missing (I replaced them already) which seems oddly specific and yes I was very thorough with the bags and poured them in containers. Huh.

Same colour too, light gray. For the bottom floor I probably mixed them up somewhere because I had some dark gray leftover but it’s not like it’ll make a difference as they’re barely visible.

Hey, is there a good tutorial, either text or video, on using Stud.io and figuring out shortcuts? I was fiddling with it to recreate some of the older Hoth ground weapons, and rotating is pretty painful. I figure it's mostly because I don't know how to use it well, having watched a few Carbohydrates streams, it's clear other people can use it really well! :P

I've done some "getting started with Stud.io" streams in the past but I'm sure they're old enough to no longer be available. I'll tell you some stuff, though!

Rotation:

The shortcut to rotate a piece is R. Click an arrow and you'll be met with a text box and a wheel graphic. If you click the text box, you can manually type the angle that you need. Otherwise, you can drag the red bar around the wheel:

1) If you drag the red bar with your cursor inside the wheel (wheel turns red), it rotates at 5 degree intervals.
2) If you drag the cursor just outside the wheel (wheel turns blue), it rotates at 1 degree intervals.
3) If you drag your cursor farther outside the wheel, it rotates freely and sub-degree with no intervals.

Translation:

The shortcut to move a piece along one axis at a time is T. Pressing T greets you with a text box and some arrow graphics. You can type specific coordinates into the text box by clicking on it, or drag the part along an axis by clicking the corresponding arrow. The distance per interval that the piece will slide is determined by the scale of the grid that you're currently working on. There is a drop menu at the top called "grid" (next to "snap") that you can use to select your grid scale. IMO, the only useful ones are "medium grid with plate height" and "fine grid." They are literally the only two I ever use, and I have hotkeyed both of them so I can swap on the fly when moving pieces. I put mine on "." and "/"

1) If the grid is set to "medium grid with plate height," then bricks will move horizontally 1/2 of a stud at a time (10 LDU) and vertically 1 plate at a time (8 LDU). Technic pieces will move 1/2 module (10 LDU) at a time in any direction. Different parts scale according to their needs. It's very intuitive and well designed.
2) If the grid is set to "fine," then every piece will move 1 LDU at a time. This is good for fine tuning placements while still keeping things in system and relatively aligned.

Other handy shortcuts:

- Toggle the visual grid with ctrl+B.
- C switches to your copy tool if you have nothing currently selected. If you do have one or more pieces selected, pressing C will copy the selection instead. It will continue to place copies until the tool is switched to something else.
- V switches to your default selection tool. Shift+V cycles through the various selection tools, such as "select by color" or "select connected" and so on. Pressing V just after copying something means you will only place 1 copy of the selection.
- Copy + mirror is the best feature ever. There's an option in the bottom right corner you can click to perform this when you have pieces selected, but it's much better to create a keyboard shortcut for this function, because if you do it with a keyboard shortcut, it will mirror along the axis you're currently looking down. You get a tremendous amount of control over what gets mirrored and in what way when you do it this way. If you mirror copy a piece that comes in left+right pairs, like wedge plates, the program will automatically substitute the correct corresponding matched part.

edit: also, turn on "snap" and turn off "collision" and never touch those settings ever again. Snap is helpful and honestly never gets in the way (since you can press T to translate something right off whatever it snapped to) and collision just creates problems where there don't need to be any. You can eyeball if something is gonna work or not.

More messing around with the Battinson design... I'm not sure I like this car. I've been looking at side profiles of it, and the front bumper is off the ground, the area behind the front wheels almost drags the ground, and the rear bumper/fin area is up the in the air. Lots of subtle curves to the body that are hard to replicate (on the two official Lego ones, I feel the smaller one pulled off some of the side/rear shaping well while taking great liberties with the front, but the big technic one didn't even try).

Probably not final, gonna go do some real work for a bit and let it stew in the back of my head.
