I never saw the Blu-Rays and it’s been ages since I watched my DVDs, but I didn’t notice anything jarring. Everything looks “correct” and fits together. They restored the original matte painting for the vehicle flying off a cliff in Raiders; from what I saw the BR had a very distracting digital replacement of it for some bizarre reason.

Crystal Skull looks awful but that’s not the fault of the UHD.

Crystal Skull actually looks markedly better on the UHD, they seem to have dialed down the color saturation and bloom on the blu ray.

I think that the only reason I haven't upgraded my BR Indiana Jones set to the UHD is the lovely packaging. It's a popular and beloved property, Disney, maybe try a little harder than not at all..?

Doesn’t surprise me, but the most pristine picture quality can’t make the jungle chase at the end looks any less awful.

They may be worth it for the HDR and better colours, but don't expect much in the way of 4K detail. Some shots even look worse than on BD. It often looks like they just filtered and sharpened a 2K image.

Yeah. In the FOTR EE when Isildur puts on the ring in the first 15 minutes, it looks like high school green screen. I laughed because it was soooo rough. Also, when the Fellowship escapes Moria or some other wide shot, it also looks so obvious. But it’s offset by everything else!

It’s been 20 years, so I’ll take your word for it.

That being said, it’s annoying how GOOD the 20 year CGI looks compare to what’s pushed out now. The level of detail in the Ents, etc. or the creative use of extras+CG for the huge crowds. Really a bummer that all the technical aspects of movies have just been getting flattened/removed, etc.

Oh, apparently Dune is getting a home 3D release. Somewhat interested in getting it and trying it out.

I might not be describing this right, but to my eyes the picture is so soft that higher resolution doesn't do anything. It's not blurry, it's not out of focus, it's just soft.

It's because Peter Jackson poured his heart and soul into the LOTR movies and the blockbusters now are made on an assembly line so they can pump them out as fast as possible knowing full well people will see them in droves as long as they got the spandex fightmans.

Watched Two Towers EE last night. The LOTR trilogy really is just magical. It's insane how well it holds up. There's a few shots here and there. But especially with the Atmos and UHD, goddamn.

I should probably grab the Hobbit trilogy. Obviously doesn't touch these, but I know they're great UHDs.

He also poured his heart and soul into loving the New Zealand film industry. Say what you will about the MCU or DCEU movies, at least neither series led to legislation being passed to literally roll back on the rights of crew members.

Probably not worth it to upgrade unless you see yourself watching the movies on a regular basis. Personally I watch LOTR about once a year, or maybe every other year.

I didn't know that. That's really lame. But I was commenting on the films themselves. Plus it's not like Disney's business practices are any better, I'm sure their employees get dicked over plenty. If they can get away with swindling their A-list stars the regular people who work on those movies probably have to eat the poo poo sandwich all the time.

Sure, but is there any legislation anywhere called "The Disney Laws" or anything along those lines that were passed under "urgency" by a right wing government? Peter Jackson has always had an association with Tory figures (the guy who gets chopped up at the start of Braindead is played by Bill Ralston, a well-known right-wing journalist in New Zealand, for example). The even shittier part is that after claiming that the actor's union was threatening industrial action on the Hobbit set, it turned out that the film was never actually a target of any such action - something Jackson was assured of as revealed in emails between Jackson and the union leadership that were made public via the Official Information Act.

That, and the lovely way in which he treated the local actors on the set of the Hobbit, and his pettiness in opting not to invite them to the red carpet premiere of An Unexpected Journey.

Oh, and during a massive housing crisis (similar to what Ireland is going through), he's habitually tried to run interference on a housing development because it would affect his views from his mansion, including throwing piles of cash at a mayoral candidate that ran on a platform of stopping that development, and allegedly demanding staff at his production company, WingNut Films vote for this guy.

So yeah, "separate the art from the artist" and all, but he absolutely taints his work retroactively. Honestly, I'd go so far as to say that Sam Raimi did more for the NZ film industry than Peter Jackson did, on balance.

I think that has a lot to do with the filtering. The movies weren't particularly sharp on BD either, but filtering out any remains of film-grain/texture make them even softer looking.
Example: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a=0&d1=15008&d2=5242&s1=156542&s2=48963&i=2&l=0

I kinda doubt that they were even scanned at 4K.

I figured it's common sense because of the way the internet is, but for anyone that is interested in collecting adult films from VinSyn, but aren't interested in blind-buying them, I've noticed that a specific adult website tends to get the new transfers uploaded fairly quickly, if you want to look at them before you purchase. The website may start with an X and might be named after a small rodent with a short tail that is often kept as a pet.

I approached it more like I was walking into an adult book store downtown and just went off the cover alone. the blu-ray.com review seems fairly positive though https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Summer-Camp-Girls-Blu-ray/288705/#Review

and my copy of Steel and Lace shipped as well. Dunno why I bought them separately. that was pretty dumb.

I thought that their vintage movies were a lot higher res than your typical tube site uploads, didn't know a lot of them were straight up taken directly from the new blu rays.

Speaking of pornography from VinSyn, just a heads up that Anyone But My Husband and Sweet Punkin that they're releasing as a 2-film set in late January have a couple extremely famous scenes that are considered some of the hottest ever filmed, particularly a moment between C.J. Laing and Tony Perez that has previously only been available as a terrible VHS transfer and has been looped like crazy across the internet.
