Having gone through something similar 3 times, when all is done, make sure to give your wife a really long embracing hug in private. Even though your beloved pet may be gone, she is in a better place, and no longer suffering. Then, try to spend some time doing 2 things: 1. Try to remember all the good times when she was alive, and not how it was at the end. As a natural doomer, I'm still messed up from when we had to put our first one down, as all I could remember were the surgeries, painful recovery, trying to help them eat, visits with vets/oncologists/ultrasound specialists, final diagnosis, deterioration, and then the last day. He may have been a pet, but he was my best friend. I'm tearing up writing this right now. If you cry when remembering, it'll actually help with the grieving process, so let it flow if it does. Don't bottle that poo poo up. It's not healthy (trust me on this). 2. Try to find some humor/laughter to balance it out. Watch some funny videos, stand up comedy, anything to make you laugh. I lost my dear cat myself upthread, very suddenly, and very expensively. But it was all worth it to know that the end of her life was painless and sleepy (read: drugged out of her gourd at the vet) rather than scared and struggling, possibly in the middle of the night under the bed.
