https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-03/omicron-s-mild-infections-signal-a-new-phase-of-lower-severity

“We’re now in a totally different phase,” said Monica Gandhi, an immunologist at the University of California, San Francisco. “The virus is always going to be with us, but my hope is this variant causes so much immunity that it will quell the pandemic.”

The omicron variant was discovered in South Africa just over a month ago, and experts caution that there is still plenty of time for the situation to change. But data from the past week suggest that a combination of widespread immunity and numerous mutations have resulted in a virus that causes far less severe disease than previous iterations.

One study out of South Africa found that patients admitted to the hospital there during the omicron-dominated fourth wave of the virus were 73% less likely to have severe disease than patients admitted during the delta-dominated third wave. “The data is quite solid now that hospitalizations and cases are decoupled,” said Wendy Burgers, an immunologist at the University of Cape Town.

I'm just a lowly librarian, but what the gently caress does this even mean?

"hospitalizations and cases are decoupled" would seem like it means that cases are going up but hospitalizations are not seeing a corresponding increase? We can already see an increase in hospitalizations here. This seems particularly weird in a study of patients admitted to a hospital. Didn't 100% of these cases get admitted? Also who the hell is getting admitted without severe COVID?

Also just a quick update without the upsetting details - it became clear within a couple hours of her returning home that we should have said goodbye today, so my wife is taking her back first thing in the morning. Thank you everyone here for your support and advice - my wife has been asking throughout the day what you guys have been saying and it's been helping her feel better.

Having gone through something similar 3 times, when all is done, make sure to give your wife a really long embracing hug in private. Even though your beloved pet may be gone, she is in a better place, and no longer suffering.

Then, try to spend some time doing 2 things:

1. Try to remember all the good times when she was alive, and not how it was at the end. As a natural doomer, I'm still messed up from when we had to put our first one down, as all I could remember were the surgeries, painful recovery, trying to help them eat, visits with vets/oncologists/ultrasound specialists, final diagnosis, deterioration, and then the last day. He may have been a pet, but he was my best friend. I'm tearing up writing this right now. If you cry when remembering, it'll actually help with the grieving process, so let it flow if it does. Don't bottle that poo poo up. It's not healthy (trust me on this).

2. Try to find some humor/laughter to balance it out. Watch some funny videos, stand up comedy, anything to make you laugh. It'll help release some endorphins that will help you feel better overall.

also this always makes me smile:

in practice it means nothing

what it is being used to indicate is that hospitalizations are not rising with cases at the same rate as previous waves

which is, from what i'm looking at in many places, not actually true unless you unskew the data in your head for "with covid" vs "from covid"

I'm so sorry about your dog, it's the absolute worst. I can't even imagine having to go through that while also dealing with that pre-vaccine stress.

You and your wife are doing things right. I lost my dear cat myself upthread, very suddenly, and very expensively. But it was all worth it to know that the end of her life was painless and sleepy (read: drugged out of her gourd at the vet) rather than scared and struggling, possibly in the middle of the night under the bed.

decoupling is hopium that the vaccines are so good and omicron is so mild that you can have a million cases but it doesn't matter, maybe one of them is going to get sick enough to feel anything. so cases don't cause hospitalizations any more

the hospitalizations don't count either because the disease is so mild and under control that people are going out and living their lives even after they have covid, and they're going to the hospital only after they break their arm rock climbing and then test positive for covid and didn't even know they had it (because it's so mild you don't notice it)
