Read HP as a teen because my first GF was super into it and I liked it well enough. It's passe to me now though because I can't just dwell on it forever. I think the main part of the appeal is that series is many character's entire adolescence, which is nice when you're growing up as the books are coming out, and again when the movies are coming out and the actors are growing up on screen. mastershakeman posted:Harry Potter thinks he's a special magic boy and totally ignores that he's one of, if not the , richest person in the world. A safe full of gold and a legendary magic artifact gifted to him his first days of being a wizard He was trying a vanilla run and ignored all the DLC goodies in the vault. LionArcher posted:A character can have an arch. Should is debatable. And Harry does arc, many times in the books. Starts with no family, a need to have that connection, ends the series happy with a big family, and a love for enemy's that became friends, and so on. Sees the flaws of his parents and mentors, and tries to be better. Of course what ends up happening is he settles to being a cop to keep the status quo going that created the dark lord in the first place. I like how the wizard economy is you either work for the government, run some weird rear end shop, or gently caress off to your family farm and just vibe out there doing whatever.

Big Mad Drongo posted:Yeah one of the unspoken problems with Harry Potter is it's so loving unimaginative. Most bottom-tier fantasy series had something resembling whimsy, just held back by generic plots and bad writing. Like in retrospect I should be banned from reading after enjoying the Myth Adventures books as a kid, but as wretched as they were at least it was about a crazy dimension-hopping trash wizard and his wise-cracking, green-scaled partner in crime. It was bad and stupid and probably all kinds of offensive, but it was vaguely interesting. same except i payed video games and the magic in them was way better than gay rear end harry potter magic.

porfiria posted:I may be off the mark here but I think Harry Potter effectively invented the "YA" genre. Of course there was "middle grade" fiction before that, things like Wizard of Earthsea and the Chronicles of Prydain, but they existed somewhere in a big ambiguity between children's literature and adult literature. They were reasonably serious. harry potter was definitely one of the precursors but it's generally some combination of hunger games and twilight that're attributed to really codifying and creating the tropes and patterns of the YA genre as it exists today. harry potter began as a children's series that grew with the readers, becoming YA as a side effect. but if you crack open any best selling YA or YA-adjacent novel, you basically have the hunger games model. there are some newer releases in the genre that're definitely aping something closer to harry potter these days, however.
