So I'm not starting her on Mario Kart, but maybe once she's got more of the basic game hand-eye stuff down it'll be easier. I haven't really played games much in the last 10-15 years, so there's not much of a skill level to catch up to :D

Is there something good that's co-operative? If not, maybe mini-games or puzzle games, because it feels like past experience has less bearing.
More action oriented games so it doesn't feel boring or condescending:

Lovers in Dangerous Spacetime
Super Chariot

Both cooperative games that focus on communication though I think super chariot is a little easier to get into. I would not recommend overcooked unless you enjoy challenges in your relationship.

My wife sounds similar and she really really got into Guacamelee, don't know if you have that on another system but it's never left mine once she got the hang of it.

Mario 3d world is legit fantastic for coop compared to the others in the franchise for my money.

Mario party superstars is good too.

For puzzles, we've been playing OVERBOARD together which is a great reverse whodunit, obra dinn will be next.

Cross posting from the video game deals thread in case anyone wants to gamble...

Amazon Warehouse has used Switch Pro controllers for $16.22

Covered under Amazon's return policy so you should be able to return it without issue, but don't get your hopes up about the quality. Not sure if Amazon Warehouse has the same deals outside of the US, also.

Overcooked/Overcooked 2 are cooperative, but you're under a time limit and it gets frantic. There WILL be shouting and panic. So maybe not a good fit?

Picross is a popular puzzle game and the ones made by Jupiter have multiplayer coop. Addictive.

Streets of Rage 4 is an old style side scoller beat em up you can coop in. It's pretty good, can get a bit difficult but should be fun

Stardew Valley is supposed to be a good casual game, you play as a guy running a farm. I haven't played it but people in the thread seem to like it. I think there's coop in it as well? Maybe?

Snipperclips is a fun puzzle coop game, you play as these pieces of paper and you snip each other into different shapes to achieve goals, like pop a balloon. It's a good time

Mario + Rabbids has a coop mode, though you need to complete the first couple worlds to unlock it. It's xcom meets mario, and is way better than you would expect. Usually goes on sale for pretty cheap

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is a slow paced exploratory game where they added coop in a patch. The game itself is super charming and fun, I haven't played coop but it sounds fun. Might be some fighting over the camera

Diablo 3 has coop, it is a dungeon crawler. I think it's pretty grindy?

I think Luigi's Mansion 3 has coop? You play as Luigi, Mario's brother. He's busting ghosts, as a ghostbuster. I haven't played 3 but the previous two were super fun

For minigames, there's always Wario Ware or Mario Party. The thing about Mario Party is you should never expect to win, the game will totally, purposely gently caress you on the last turn. So you just play it for fun and if you happen to win, well great

Fantastic list but I wouldn't recommend Luigi mansion 3 for coop, that was the main reason we got it and not only does it make you wait a long while to do co-op, But then to unlock co-op it re-gates it so the other person plays by themselves for a while, including a miniboss fight if I remember correctly, so we stopped before we got to a point where it was us actually playing together.

I consider even Mario Odyssey to have better co-op functionality because of this.

I'm getting extremely frustrated with my OLED switch... it's connected to the TV, and I've tried different HDMI cables and different inputs on my TV (2020 Sony x900h) and it WON'T consistently appear when turning the switch on.

I've tried the "power match" setting on the switch off and on. Right now it's a 2/10 chance that if you use the controller to wake the switch (and TV) that the switch will appear on the screen.

I have to turn the TV on with it because even with the switch on, in the dock, if I switch to its input, I still get nothing.

I'm going crazy here and it's actually incredibly frustrating. Am I an idiot? I hope I am. I am using the OLED dock that came with it and this is my first switch. I've checked all of my TV's video and power settings for something and nothing has had an effect.

Anyone else have this happen?

Try this. I know it will sound crazy.

When you slot the switch into the dock, HOLD IT DOWN ONTO THE SOCKET GENTLY BUT FIRMLY FOR A FEW SECONDS

this always fixes the problem for me, which has persisted now across two Switches and their respective docks.

I don't know what the gently caress it means.

i am usually a lurker but i wanted to interject here to say that i had a very different experience and to highly recommend lm3 for coop.

LM3 felt like it was built for coop and picturing playing through the story on single player seems like it would dampen the fun factor massively. i bought the game to play with my partner, who is your casual non-gamer, and we had a blast. it was probably the first game she ever finished properly. the bit about having to unlock coop is true but the time it takes is a bit over stated. i set it up so that i was the goop (secondary luigi) and she was the main luigi which forced her to play the game and make the decisions about movement- as opposed to me dragging her around. if you are more into carrying your partner then i’d recommend the stronger player take the reggie luigi. we got about 40 hrs out of it and i ended up buying copies for my friends (when they were $30 on a bf sale 2020) so we could play online with our respective partners/roommates and it owns bones. i don’t think i could recommend any other game more for coop story play, i would defo recommend pikman3 the same amount, but not more.

anyway, i suggest you pick it back up and get past the initial solo stuff because the game is so clever, fun, unique, silly, engaging, and gorgeous. even the clunky and bumbly controls seem to be perfectly designed to fit the mood and frustration adds to the puzzles some times.

I bounced off LM3 coop too. At one point my roommate said "Is this it?" and like yeah, you suck up stuff and sometimes it's a ghost. We stopped after a while and went back to Windjammers. I think you need to really enjoy collectathons to get value out of LM3.

Sep 10, 2017

has anyone actually tried co-op picross? i haven't because i don't know anyone irl who cares about picross but it seems like it would be super annoying even if you're both cooperating as earnestly as possible.

for example, ive had it activate when i switch from docked to handheld or vice-versa, and i have to quit and re-enter the puzzle because iirc you can't even move your cursor to the same spot as the other player. i guess that prevents the issue of two people trying to change the same square at once but seems like it would introduce other issues. like unexpectedly going a square too far, or a player going afk for any time at all. and i got the impression there's a competitive element, like who fills more correct squares or something, so add in deliberate counter play as a factor. and if you want to reason through the logic together, one cursor seems better than two.

i don't know. it seems bad the way i imagine it. but it's purely academic for me. that's why I'm wondering if anyone's tried it.

I'll do coop picross sometimes, it's fun. The cursor thing isn't a problem when you're both actually playing, and even if someone needs to step away for a bit it's easy to move it on top of a solved square so it's not in the way. The rest of your problems are just imaginary, there's no "competitive counter play" and it's nice having separate cursors instead of having to go through "look at, uh, that row, the one with the 2 3 3 near the bottom" every time you spot something.

Stardew Valley is my go-to recommendation for co-op games, especially to ease non-gamers into gaming. The game pace is very chill. There's no real fail or lose condition. You can just let your girlfriend run around and do whatever she likes while you keep the farm running. As she gets better at the game, you'll find you can get a lot more done than you could by yourself.

She'll get her own little cabin, and she can make friends with the townsfolk separately from you. When you start a co-op farm you'll have the option to pool money or have separate wallets. I suggest pooling money.

It's a great game to co-op with, and a great game in general!

gonna once again recommend wilmot's warehouse, which is simple, fun, and has great split-screen co-op

1. A truck drops a bunch of items off at your warehouse

2. You pick them up and put them wherever you want in your big warehouse. In the normal difficulty, there is no time limit during this part. You can spend hours organizing your warehouse if you want to.

3. People ask you for items and you have to find + deliver them within the time limit

4. Go to step 1. It gets more complex once your warehouse has a billion different items

Super confusing because previous smash games interject the unlockable fighters as a battle as soon as it's available.
