Yeah I dunno. They wanted the reveal to be at the very end of the season. I guess they could have done a flashback to the various exploding heads of the season and shown her point-of-view during them? Maybe she wiggles her nose and the Bewitched sound effect plays?

I want an episode with Rep. AOC But She Can Blow Up Head's backstory this season.

I'm guessing the Godolkin University thing is a reference to the spinoff. I hope there is a whole episode there showing the draft and just how insane it sounds. Detroit trading their 2023 and 2025 first round draft picks for X supe! Or trading away your current lovely supe to another city along with a draft pick to entice them to take it.

She quotes some of the CIA lady's last words (probably a coincidence but you never know), I wouldn't be surprised if she was watching, or if her power goes beyond just exploding heads.

I expect it will come down to their being a supe who perfectly counters her, like a guy with no combat abilities but if you read their mind you just go insane and kill yourself. There was an X-Men arc with that as the main villain in the 80’s, and he owned them for a bit because they lead with Jean Grey & Professor X being like “well let’s just mind control him how bad could it be?” and they both got dropped into a coma. I think Wolverine and Beast had to find them and just beat the guy up.

my bets on her dying in a freak accident caused by The Lads during a time when they're still unaware that she's the mystery head-popper. Maybe she's got them working on something bad (through an oblivious Hughie) and part of the season will be them unknowingly trying to bring about something real bad lol

What’s funny is that when Season 2 was poppin AOC was also kinda poppin, or at least she was still kind of this popular, young, progressive entity that really gave us hope that not all politicians become Schumer & Pelosi…

But now even just two short years later, she feels completely irrelevant and outside of her cultural moment, and I wonder if/how that’ll impact The Scanner since she is like transparently based on AoC.

I still think taking a character who was a parody of George W. Bush and turning it into a parody of AOC really doesn't have the same resonance and is one of the few places where the show has fumbled in adapting stuff from the comic.

George W Bush is the kind of politician we’re never, ever gonna see again. There will never be a return to moderation/normalcy in politics. I think that’s why AoC-scanner works so well as a character in the modern retelling, because the struggle in 2020 US politics definitely seems to be more about fighting against the Dems so that we can have all the stuff they promised if we’d only vote for them. The republicans won, they can do whatever they want because we literally do not have liberals or leftists in the government. We have a far-far right fascist party and then a center right neoliberal party.

The enemy being “one of the good guys” makes way more sense to me than someone who is obviously a bad guy secretly being a super-bad guy, something that sounds like it has no tension.

There's a few points here I disagree with, but the show itself feels fairly neoliberal, so I find the idea that the show explicitly rejects neoliberal politics to be wrongfooted.

Though I want to see how Hughie's plotline shakes out before I draw any formal conclusions tbh.

I guess I have three issues with this take. First, I absolutely think we'll see Bush-type politicians again, and they never went away. The only difference between Trump and Bush is that Trump just said the silent parts out loud, and that maybe Bush actually believed the religious stuff that Trump spouted but which has no major difference. I think viewing Bush and his era as an example of "moderation/normalcy in politics" is very misguided.

Then, I agree that the big fight is the Democratic Party leadership constantly doing a bait and switch is a big issue, but trying to depict AOC as one of the problem rather than one of the very few elected Democrats who actually goes against that for the most part is not meaningfully attacking any of the problems with the Democratic Party. If anything, establishing AOC as the real villain of the Democratic Party would be an example of the show having a neoliberal slant. That uppity AOC is out to destroy our party, when the real solution is just voting for people who will Trust The Process.

Finally, on a fundamental level, there is a huge difference between having the villain represent the president and the villain represent a random member of congress, but an even starker tonal issue to a show in 2020 of all years taking a villain who was an old white man and turning it into a young leftist woman of color.

Her motives will undoubtedly be expanded on next season but making the obvious AOC stand in a dead end who's already been incorporated into the system was a one of the shows better decisions when the obvious move would have been to make her an earnest left-liberal reformer

I’m sorry but “the villain is an old white man!” just doesn’t carry any weight at all in 2022. We get it, of course old white men are evil. The idea that we can’t have young POC women be evil villains because it’s a “bad look” or whatever is insane.

Looking at it another way, how would making the secret political villain of the series an old white male politician make this the show better? How does he make a better villain, outside of aligning closer with what we imagine villains to be in our mind?

Also I’m a commie pinko New Yorker born and raised but I’ve lost almost all faith in Always On Camera after she voted ‘present’ on Iron Dome. She has definitely kissed the ring and I don’t expect a lot of progress from her career TBH. Not exactly her fault, not saying I could do better or stand my ground harder, but she does a lot of crying and scolding and tweeting but when it comes to actually affecting change… we’ll see, I guess

The AOC stand in being secretly maybe evil (or at least not a pure good person) makes perfect sense for this show because it really is grimdark and nothing genuinely good can ever happen or if anything good happens it immediately gets destroyed. Hughie is the only decent person on the show and he's almost completely powerless to change anything.

The AOC stand in is just the same EXACT idea as Homelander repackaged. The central premise of the entire show so far has been “just because someone looks like a hero and talks like a hero and even inspires people like a hero, that does not make them a hero”. It’s what the set up of the entire first season is, then season 2 subverts the premise by having Homelander go through this process with Stormfront, and now we’re doing it with Congresswoman Neuman. If the Boys could be said to have a message so far, it’s not to trust anyone who says that they can save you.
