~*4 LIFE*~
Hello, my lovelies, hello! It is so nice to see your happy faces once again (and also Zaggitz), thank you so much for making this part of your weekend. We’ve come a long way over the last month and I must take this moment to thank everyone who’s contributed to what can only be called another forum success. Yes, it’s been a fantastic thread with some fantastic lists but like your next Hades run all good things must come to their end in time and so as we stand here looking forward into a bright new year of gaming let’s take a moment to reflect back over the year that was.

They called it the Year of No Games. No Games, they said! Well you proved them wrong as this year 195 goons came together to name 595 separate titles as contenders for the prestigious title of Game of the Year. That’s more goons and more games than ever before!

However we must acknowledge the impact that COVID-19 had on our favourite hobby, denying us many anticipated releases as one after one they were pushed back beyond January 1st. This has affected our results with more old games featuring in our final countdown than ever before. In fact, the oldest game came out in the year 2000! That means it’s old enough to drink and vote!

The boundaries between genres continue to blur as many indie developers posit the question ‘what even is a game anyway?’. This continues to bear in your picks which feature a wide array of games including crosswords, sudokus, digitally-assisted party games, a board game, a car wash simulator, two Radiohead albums, a fantasy football league and a Gilmore Girls romhack! We might not know what games are but we sure know we love to play them!

Goons continued to push the boat out with their endless creativity as we saw lists with customized graphics, homemade gifs, digital art and one talented goon even submitted their vote by video. Now we don’t give awards for the best designed list round here but for all of you who flexed your skills please know that we are in awe of your abilities!

But I fear that is too much waffle from me. I know why you’re really here! You want to see that top 75 countdown and find out just what was Something Awful’s Game of the Year for 2021! All will be revealed soon enough but as we go on there are some questions we must ponder.

  • By far the biggest news of the year was the announcement of Metroid Dread at E3. Originally conceived in 2002 it took almost 20 years for this successor to the 2D Metroid series to make it to our consoles. When it did fans rejoiced but after being surprisingly absent in the early ballots will a flood of later votes be enough to lift it to the top spot?
  • But that wasn’t the only long-anticipated game to come out in 2021. As the sequel to its 2005 original Psychonauts 2 was a veritable spring chicken at just a 16 year wait. It launched to critical acclaim as a worthy successor with a strong cult following but do enough of them post here to make it your Game of the Year?
  • Here on the Games forum we’re a big lover of RPGs and no RPG was bigger this year than Shin Megami Tensei V. With its sister series Persona receiving regular love in these polls it was time for SMT to prove that it could be its equal but did enough of you vote for it to make a run at the gold?
  • The biggest trend of 2021 was undoubtedly the trend of time loop games with releases coming out in a variety of genres. The biggest of these games was Arkane’s Deathloop, tasked in the unenviable position of having to live it to the studio’s classics while standing in the world’s attention following a number of high profile COVID delays in the AAA sphere. Would it be able to hold up under the pressure?
  • The biggest trend of 2021 was undoubt- nope, hang on.
  • Ahem. After what could kindly be described as an, um… ‘troubled’ release PS5 owners were still waiting on their killer app to justify the system purchase and in 2021 they may have found it in Returnal, a stunning feat or architecture that was the very definition of next-gen. It’s a great game, no doubt, but will the 3 people who own a PS5 be enough to score the winning points?
  • On Something Awful the Hitman games have always been a hit, if you’ll pardon the pun, and Hitman III was no exception for those who played it. However a controversial exclusivity deal with Epic Game Store turned off a lot of potential buyers. Will this decision be a mistake for a game that would otherwise be a lock for a high placement?
  • We didn’t run a Game of the Year thread in 2015 but if we had the chances are strong that it would have been won by Toby Fox’s Undertale. We’ve been waiting a long time for the sequel and the first chapter didn’t make a big impact but this year he dropped Deltarune Chapter 2 to much better reception. Will it be enough to secure the #1 spot?
  • One game that has won our Game of the Year award is Disco Elysium and then the year after it became the first old game to achieve a top 10 position. Will there be enough love remaining to help it pull off the threepeat? A console release and additional content drop will certainly help! And what of last year’s Game of the Year, Hades. Will it be able to match that incredible feat from 2020?
  • Speaking of previous thread winners we are in a brand new position this year as a direct sequel to a past winner hit release. Yes, Monster Hunter World is out of the running this time but in its place stands Monster Hunter Rise with the burden of history on its shoulders. Will it be able to live up to its reputation and bring the win home for Monster Hunter for the second time?
  • And finally, finally it is only fitting that we end our musings on Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. Dear sweet Final Fantasy XIV. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. For years goons have been the premiere advocate for Square Enix’s masterful MMO but this was the year that the rest of the world took notice. But will it be enough? Will an enhanced fanbase combine with the culminatory release of a 10 year story to produce the win so many of us are hoping for or will it have to stand there watching yet again as another catches the bouquet?

We’ll be answering these questions and so many more but before we dive into this countdown as is custom let’s take a gander at the rest of the rest. (Notable 2021 releases in bold)

Here we go, friends. It’s time to start the countdown for the 2021 Game of the Year. We have 75 games to get through so settle yourselves in for a long one because this train we’re on don’t make no stops! At this point it behooves me to remind you that any ties for points have been settled with the countback rule for tiebreaker (i.e. most #1 votes then most #2 votes and so on) and with that bit of admin out of the way let’s jump right in and see the game that you voted in at #75…

One thing I'm gonna highlight right out the gates is that this year saw a much wider point spread than previous years. When we did a top 75 two years ago it only took 19 points to get into it, this time it's almost half again as many!
