Tf kind of advantage does this give in nature? Is it like Dazzle camouflage or something? From my perspective it's a giant "notice me and eat me" banner to birds.

So if you've managed to survive even with a giant "notice me and eat me" banner, you must be one hell of a strong, healthy, capable, sexy butterfly. Even with a handicap you're surviving, so you must be pretty studly! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_selection

FINE. I withdraw my request to have Arizona bombed off the map. In all seriousness, it’s been a while since I shed a tear of happiness but this right here did it for me. I coached both my boys until they started playing high school ball and a requirement of being part of our team was that the kids and parents had to help out at least once a year with a program very similar to that in our hometown. Most of us ended up doing it a few times a year and some of the boys continued into high school. Dammit I haven’t thought about that in a few years.

A lot of the "look at me, I am very visible to predators" stuff in animals is so that a predator will indeed notice them and eat them. But they are mildly poisonous, or covered in yucky/annoying barbs/fur etc. so that the predator will think "that very distinctive and easily spotted thing is not good for eating. I know this because of the bad experience I had eating one before, so will leave it alone next time." It's why a bunch of fish are shiny and colourful and pretty. A clownfish makes a far worse sandwich than a tuna. True, for this strategy to work, some will die. But I guess it must be evolutionarily worth it in the long run, and over large numbers.

Making yourself more visible to predators doesn't really matter when your entire adult lifespan is measured in hours or days. There are some outliers that can live for months, but most butterflys would die of old age in 2 weeks.

There are some outliers that can live for months, but most butterflys would die of old age in 2 weeks. That doesn't make sense. Things eat butterflies; they live long enough to get eaten. Unless birds only eat old, geriatric butterflies or something, they would still benefit from traits that make it more likely for them to evade predators. They've got to survive long enough to reproduce at any rate. ...unless few of them survive to reproduce but they have a zillion offspring or something?...

My guess would be yeah, it looks confusing as hell and if a predator tries to go for it anyway it goes for the very lively bits which it doesn't seem to need to move around, they're fluttery nonsense hanging off of it Horniness probably factors into that too; look at this flashy boy whose cool and smart enough to keep all his visually attractive bits without being eaten by a bird
