https://retroachievements.org/user/kirbysuperstar That was loving hard. But fun, kinda like Splatterhouse but with uh, any depth at all and it sure was gorgeous for a GB game of its time. Just, my god those last two stages.

Nevermind, worked it out. Stand close to the boss, hold UP and hit B repeatedly to do a little upthrust with your hammer. Bombs should either be knocked back past you far enough that they won't hit you, or they'll be knocked up on to the bosses head. When he's hit, duck under him as he crosses to the other side then quickly move jump over to join him to avoid any final bombs. Repeat as necessary, you may need to tweak your position slightly as his rate of fire increases but the trick is definitely to stay in close and upthrust.

kirbysuperstar posted:https://retroachievements.org/user/kirbysuperstar I agree with all of this! Hammerin' Harry was a pleasant surprise and I enjoyed it all the way through. It looks great, sounds great, and is decently challenging. Quarth was fun too. Interesting puzzle game, fun in chunks. Pretty simple, but not in a bad way. James Bons 007 was interesting, but I didn't finish it. Tibet and the Secret Base just weren't fun. I did kind of enjoy it up to that point, but those levels were a slog. Apparently the next one is worse. The sound and music weren't too bad. I never had a Gameboy, and once I had a GBA it was a Pokemon machine, so I look forward to whatever other gems we play! I look forward to that RPG thread too.

Hey everyone, Given that we're about halfway through the month it's probably time to work out how we pick games to keep this train rolling. There are a couple of approaches I can think of, please chime in and let me know what you'd be keen to do or if you have any better ideas. Option 1: Mode 7 Dictatorship I continue arbitrarily picking whatever games I drat well feel like. Pro: Nobody has to do anything. Con: My tastes are weird and you'll have to deal with it. Option 2: Dictatorship of the Game Boy Proletariat We rotate through each poster picking three games each month. Pro: Everyone gets a chance to force other people to play poo poo they like Con: Might be waiting a long while for your turn, relies on folks being invested in nominating stuff Option 3: Gigantic Random List Everyone nominates two or three games each, we through them into a giant list and then randomly pull three out each month Pro: Everyone gets input Con: Subject to the winds of random chance which might lead to some odd months Personally I think Option 3 sounds good because it's pretty minimal effort for me to keep the OP updated off the back of it, we get a wide variety of games/tastes and people can suggest whatever they like.

I like the idea of a poster picking one of the three games, but I don't know what's easiest for the OP. A list of interested parties seems easiest, but making it a reward for score/time is a cool idea too. I personally like the idea of posters pitching a game they really want others to play and then it goes to a vote. I like the OPs little write ups and I'd enjoy reading everyone pitch their game of choice. Vote results could even dictate the order the games are played so we could potentially have a backlog of poster picks to go through before another recommendation session.

It's extra work but I do like the idea of OP picking one, random poster picking one, then getting a random one.

Finished Hammerin' Harry just now. Fun game overall and it looks great (quite liked the Pocket's blue palette for it in particular), but it's been a while since I've played something that masks how incredibly short it is by being hard as balls. Level 4 in particular was an absolute nightmare. I thought I was doing something wrong in how I was trying to get past those moving walls by hitting them and then dodging out of the way but no, that was the correct thing to do, it's just the timing required is really that precise. The rest of the game wasn't so bad, aside from occasional spikes like the level 2 boss and the end of the rope section in Level 3. Overall, solid little game that I would recommend trying, but definitely not a forgotten classic. Quarth is pretty cool, but I find with puzzle games they either grab me or they don't and sadly I think it falls into the latter category. It might have done more if I played it for longer, but I gave it half an hour and that was enough. Not a bad game by any means, just not for me. Haven't started James Bond 007 yet, but hoping will have time to fit that in before the end of the month.

For the random games I'll make a list of English GB/GBC games and we'll draw from that because I don't think getting stuck with anything text heavy and Japanese-only will be fun.

Gotta say, I just hit up the a random number generator website to find our first random game for next month and it's cool having it spit out a game that I would never have thought of, or guessed would be on the GB/GBC. It's also likely not a game I would have tried of my own volition but hey, we'll all get to see how good it is come February. I'm still working on Hammerin' Harry, but I haven't had much luck getting past the airship on my attempts so far. I feel like I'm going to sit down some time in some sort of perfect gaming Zen and finish it off. Marrakech in James Bond is where I struggled as a kid and honestly it's where I can feel my interest waning as an adult; if I find time I still intend to try and push through and see a little more of the game but I think Hammerin' Harry is going to be my number one priority. Quarth has been a fun little puzzler to bust out a few rounds of on my lunch breaks, but not as addictive as I initially thought it would be.

I enjoyed the first half of the game where there was a good mix of exploration, puzzles, and combat. After Marrakech the game focuses way too much on the combat part. The levels become large mazes filled to the brim with enemies. Joe Chill fucked around with this message at 18:34 on Jan 23, 2022 |

I've done the part where there are the rooms with 3 switches, and beaten Golvog. There's not much guesswork in the 3-switch rooms as they play a jingle when you get them right. But now I'm running round flicking switches on computers and they don't seem to give any clues whether I'm doing it correctly. I guess this is the part you mean? It's definitely a slog at this point but I'm close enough to see it through. Don't think I ever got beyond Tibet as a kid!
