Specifically, probably more darkwave adjacent or even minimal wave. There was a minimal wave compilation released about a decade ago I remember my ex enjoyed and I dug it too:

https://minimalwave.bandcamp.com/album/v-a-the-minimal-wave-tapes-volume-1

In fact, I think that label later released some Iron Curtain, so that's maybe a good place to start.

Darkwave is more minimal and lo-fi, darker in tone (duh) and usually slower. New wave is like Devo and Blondie and stuff. Shinier, more pop, more danceable.

Definitely. A lot of darkwave gets kind of goth adjacent, with spidery, almost post-punk guitar lines in a lot of cases.

EDIT: ActionJackson, you might like the recently released "lost" Alan Vega album 'Mutator' https://youtu.be/p63uxLCI260, and (apologies if I'm telling you how to suck eggs here), Suicide's first record is phenomenally good.

I have a weird request. I was a pretty big weeb as a kid, and listened to a ton of anime music. I don't watch nearly as much anime anymore, but my music tastes are decidedly weeby still. I was curious if I could find western analogs to some of music tastes so I don't cringe at the idea of someone listening to my Spotify likes.

Some examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmxEuQXTHUU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6YvrAP7iIs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHx_jBrOxAM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6nbRXdDfN8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FH1dL51oU

There's not really a through line for them all, but all of the songs are ones I've been liking recently. Also worth noting, my girlfriend and friends all know about my weeby taste in music, this is a decidedly goony self-hating weeb impulse.

Idk man, if kpop is allowed to have widespread international appeal I don't see why jrock can't fall under the same umbrella, I'd just lean into those tastes personally. Like I see some Ringo Shiina in there, you'd probably like the bulk of her solo discog or her band Tokyo Jihen. Her stuff is specifically more on the jazz fusion side, which is definitely branching out from the usual anime OP/ED theme, but there's nothing wrong with just liking those or using them to look further into the artists themselves!

(The video for this one might be :nws: actually, just a heads up)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECxBHhMc7oI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph69M0PIT70

If you're curious about the more jazz based stuff, she did the soundtrack for this movie called Sakuran that's a pretty solid listen all the way through:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdgi-2fKL1Q

Uhh going back to anime, I was really into shoujo back in the day and I remember the NANA soundtrack specifically having some bangers (being an anime about indie rock bands trying to ~make it~ or whatever lmao):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNjorBg_B7U

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE8as77H8Og

I remember BECK having pretty good music too if that plotline intrigues you but you'd rather see it from a male perspective:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ecws5ZuoJE

Here's Tomoko Kawase, she was the front woman for a rock band called the brilliant green but she's put out solo stuff under a variety of names and done anime openings too. This one isn't from an anime I just think it slaps, lol:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAm_cQ7ah7U

Obviously there's a ton of jrock out there, many have made music for anime because that's just kind of a big deal over there but plenty haven't, these are just the ones that came up off the top of my head

I saw a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar last week and it kind of sucked, to be honest, but I looked up the original soundtrack and that was significantly better.

For me, the stand-out track is Everything's Alright, which is just this unbelievably lovely lullaby (at least until fuckin' Judas pierces the heavens with his horrible screeching interruption). Any suggestions for songs like that? Thanks!

I do like that kind of stuff, thanks for the recommendations.
But what I'm looking for at the moment is epic dual guitar harmonies doing nearly symphonic solos, double bass drums, even a little keys. Think Amon Amarth, Dethklok, Arch Enemy, Skyfire but without the screaming or growling obscuring the guitars. Two guitars doing completely over the top poo poo in tandem.

But not like Yngwie style shredding. Riffs. Is this even a thing or am I on a fool's errand?

i'll say most bands doing this kind of poo poo usually have roots in black metal, post-rock, or math rock. i'm not sure of any full-on death metal bands that don't have a singer. i can think of a couple bands that are close to what you're describing, though, like

Blotted Science is the closest I can think of to instrumental death metal. Instrumental melodeath specifically doesn't sound like an idea of much interest because it's already a simplified version of the genre.

Thanks y’all. I haven’t heard any Russian Circles in quite a while. Love the Fuckin Champs though. Their collab with Trans Am used to be in regular rotation but I’ve kind of drifted away from math rock.

I guess I’m not too surprised that it doesn’t really exist as such. I’ve been listening to Amon Amarth all day and drat are they good. I always have them in the corner of my brain that holds novelty bands, but it’s unwarranted.

I guess the thing to do is spend some time with progressive metal, which is always fun anyway.

While it's not a direct reommendation - if you're really hankering for stuff Metal-Archives advanced search lets you stick a bunch of things in and get a nice pile of bands to click through. Link points to "melodic death" with "instrumental" lyrical themes

I love musicals and stuff, and pretty much have all these annapantsu covers I've been listening to that rule, but I'm looking for more stuff like that, but I also think I just covered 3 entirely different genres. I like music with lyrics, I like Jazz, I like electro swing, my spotify playlist is basically just 130 of my favorite songs, but I need more stuff to listen to while drawing because it's getting repetetive, and the spotify radio is just having me listen to the same stuff repeatedly with nothing new.

My absolute favorite band Vic Daniels Quartet only made two albums and disbanded ten or fifteen years back. There's so much SOUL in each of those songs I can't believe it. I bought their CD on a tour and cherished it, tragically losing it in a move. They only had a handful of poor quality singles rips online and nothing else.

A couple weeks ago I searched for the band members on Facebook and sent a message asking if they had any copies of their albums for sale. To my surprise they responded and instead uploaded their albums in full HD on Youtube. What an awesome bunch.

Link to the first album: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l0ppoFinfJRrZiyZNuszyJtaP6joay5ww

What do you even CALL this genre, anyway? There's a real 70's feel with the acoustics and fantasy novel references, but there's no drummer and the whole album's tone is rather melancholy, so it can't be Prog Rock. Can it?
