Unless I’m misreading/misunderstanding it’s not just that he lacked insurance, it’s that the vehicle he restored was previously declared totaled, which is more a safety concern than anything else, it was in purportedly bad enough shape to be declared nonviable, which means there could be subtle or even undetectable faults or damages to it and it wasn’t worth risking on the road again no matter how much you drop on repairs.

Makes me wonder if the goal was to buy a car that was an insurance writeoff at an extremely low price, put in enough new parts to make it driveable again, and then sell it to someone for the full price without revealing its status as a writeoff.

He probably bought it “for parts only”. You can go to junk yards and buy old cars on the cheap if you just need body panels or a dashboard or whatever, I’m assuming there’s the same market for super cars. He’s just an rear end in a top hat that bought the super car equivalent of a farm truck and thought he could come out ahead.

One other note about that car, does vehicle insurance in the UK work the same as the US, where the coverage applies to the other vehicle in a collision? Because if that dude's failure to have insurance means anyone he hit would be out of luck on getting compensation, then they should crush a few more of this dude's cars.

Yes, if you're at fault your insurance pays for both, if you're uninsured that is 1. illegal and 2. means the other person is likely going to have to shell out for the costs.
