Just got back from my booster, I have one AZ and two Pfizer now. Everyone I've asked has been saying the booster didn't hit them hard, but they all had mRNA for their first two. Both my AZ and my first Pfizer hit me like a loving truck, but I've always gotten strong responses to vaccines because my immune system is a dramatic little bitch. I do feel a bit woozy, but I also get like this from sun exposure these days, and my appointment was about a 40 minute walk away. So we'll see. I might have a really crummy day tomorrow.

3x Moderna here, too, and each shot made me feel terrible in slightly different ways. I'm still ready to get the next booster as soon as it's available - better feeling like crap for a few days and knowing why than to roll the dice with an infection.

Unless I'm missing something, if you get Covid, you'll most likely be out of work for a week or two, especially if you're boosted. Won't most school staff be back on the job in the not very distant future? Like of course this was completely predictable and could have been avoided, but what are the actual consequences here?

cubicle gangster posted:Maybe i'm reading this a little overly pessimistic, but can you really call it societal collapse when this is how most of the rest of the world is at all times? Tiny Timbs posted:I agree with you. If you roll with that person's take then the US is experiencing a blip off the peak of recovery after centuries of collapse. Nah, large sections of the US were living in a protected bubble but other parts definitely weren't and have been getting ground up by racism, lack of education, lack of healthcare and lack of sustainable jobs for pretty much the entirety of the US's history, but the majority of the US decided this was a fair price to pay for the quality of life they got to enjoy and turned a blind eye to it. (It's exactly the same here in Australia.) There's been regular societal flare-ups when people decided things were getting way too lovely (the George Floyd riots are a big obvious recent example but there's always lots more) but most of the rest of the US pretty much reacted by going "Wow, that's inconvenient for me, send in the cops so we can get back to the status quo." Don't forget that "things were bleak up north" during Thatcher but many people in the rest of the country were making loads of money and living better than ever. The difference is that the covid pandemic is acting like a continual giant ratchet and spreading out that perpetual collapse to a much wider section of the population. The government and the ruling bodies are obviously trying to wait it out as much as possible in the assumption that things will somehow turn out fine and life will return to normal the same as it always does but that darn virus just keeps churning out new variants which create new outbreaks A Strange Aeon posted:Unless I'm missing something, if you get Covid, you'll most likely be out of work for a week or two, especially if you're boosted. Won't most school staff be back on the job in the not very distant future? Yeah but then a different lot of staff will be out again, and exposed staff really should be isolating after an exposure so they'd be out even if they weren't falling down sick. There's school districts which have recently changed the rules so janitors and lunchroom staff can 'overlook' classes, some schools are combining classes in the gym so they require less staff per 'class', some schools are asking for community volunteers, etc etc .... Lots of schools WANT to close down but aren't allowed to because their governor made it illegal. Edit: remember it's not just teachers, they're also desperately short of bus drivers. Can't teach the kids in school if you can't get them to the school https://twitter.com/cnn/status/1437965176335122443 Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 02:49 on Jan 14, 2022 |

Yep, even in Florida where we essentially started Delta off in the US in a loud and proud way… this is obliterating it numbers wise. My circles are split into those who’ve just had it, those who currently have it, and those about to get it. Ain’t nothing else and kinda makes the previous numbers look like a joke.

A Strange Aeon posted:Unless I'm missing something, if you get Covid, you'll most likely be out of work for a week or two, especially if you're boosted. Won't most school staff be back on the job in the not very distant future? time off of school equates to time off of work for a lot of other people, which is itself a huge consequence. A lot of people actually just can't miss work. So it's a huge consequence for schools to shut down, and it's a huge consequence for adults to miss work for a week or two because they got sick; people are getting hosed comin' and goin' and in a lot of cases just going to work sick (which is literally illegal if you have young kids at home alone lol, "get hosed poors" - conservativism) We haven't sent our 2 young kids back to preschool since winter break because we figured there'd be a ton more cases from Christmas/NYE to get through and well... *gestures at everything*. But it's not like that's a consequence-free choice, even in our incredibly fortunate circumstance.
