I think it’s very funny that Scandinavians lure Americans across the pond to see the northern lights, but the location of the geomagnetic pole means that, for aurora purposes, Chicago may as well be at the latitude of Copenhagen.

NHK World preempted programming, they're showing levels. Looks like Fukushima reported 70cm rise about an hour ago  biggest reading right now is about 1.2m from some of the southern islands.

Would that be a record? I can’t find anyone claiming to have heard Pinatubo from such distances. Krakatau was said to have sounded like a cannon at a distance of three thousand miles, but in 1883 observations were naturally harder to come by.
