goddamnedtwisto posted:I don't have an envelope big enough to work it out but I feel pretty confident that Youtube's infrastructure costs are considerably less than $7bn a quarter, or even a year. The reason Google are the biggest company on earth isn't to do with the quality of any of their products, but their ability to spin up a completely distributed, hardware- and network-agnostic network on very, very cheap hardware. They probably are now, having gone steeply up in the last five years, which is why Alphabet is now boasting about how much ad revenue Youtube specifically brings in. But no amount of plucky nickel-and-diming on hardware can make video data not an order of magnitude larger than text or image data to store. Google have to play with the same codecs as the rest of us, and even though they do lots of R&D in the area there's a floor on how small you can make that data and a certain amount of processing time it takes to transcode it (Google have been moving into custom chips to aid with this). The rest of the Google app ecosystem, having reached some measure of market saturation, has gradually begun to charge you based on storage used. Big channels bring in the ad money; as time goes by it will be more and more appealing to put the ability of Joe UKMT Poster to upload 360 degree videos of every train station closed by Beeching behind a more direct revenue-producing stream, and we'll all be poorer for it.

the problem with saying "oh maybe we should compromise" is that compromise is a two-way street and requires some concessions from the other side as well and, uh, *gestures at the current Labour party*

They know that, they just want to hit Facebook Messenger. Not even Whatsapp even though its all owned by the same people, let alone the more specialist ones (or the FB private groups that are actual child exploitation dangers). That and tar the whole idea with the pedophile brush, like if you say you use it for anything it'll have a mucky association.

Probably, on the level of donald trump banning tiktok but instead of the US it's the UK and instead of an app it's the foundation of a lot of telecommunications. They can certainly just make things worse but I don't think the UK has the ability to go full technological autarky and shut out all the stuff that is structured around end to end encryption.

A stupid acquaintance tried to gross everyone out by posting an image of a person's small penis on a social media chat. Unfortunately, it was an image of a small person's penis and they've been banned from the platform. It got me thinking though. There's a fix to this problem and the tories' concerns about encrypted communication being used to harm children. What if all penises were registered on the blockchain?

They always bang on about "abolishing" e2e. Any attempt will go the same way as when they wanted to make people go to the off-licence to buy a Porn Pass. Just another story that not much of the general public understand the details of, but sounds good from a Law and Order perspective... Desperate stuff from the gov imo
