Ah man I loved it, I listened to it a few times through last night, it’s a really vibes-y album and the vibe hit with me. It reminded me a lot of Random Access Memories with the way it really tries to insinuate itself into the sound of a particular era while still hitting on all of the usual themes The Weeknd is known for, but with a clear progression for Abel as a person. Not every song is perfect; the rap verses feel a little out of place but Weezy’s is good enough that I don’t care, which I can’t say about Tyler’s, even though I love Tyler as an artist (can you imagine if he’d gotten Earl to do one for this album instead, I feel like that would have been the way to go). But when it’s on, it’s spectacular.

Random access memories is an interesting comparison - I remember being let down initially when listening to RAM because it didn’t have the “bangers” I was expecting from a Daft Punk record but once it clicked and grew on me it’s one of my favorites from them. I don’t know how I feel yet about this record- I appreciate the cohesiveness and the production is honestly stellar but like- almost the entire last half of the album uses the same drum sample and things start to feel super same-y. Gasoline slaps, and I love How Do I Make You Love Me? , Out of Time, Best Friends, and Less Than Zero. A lot of filler on first listen but it might be a grower- we’ll see!

I'm kind of disappointed? It's good but it doesn't play to the strengths that make either of them really exciting to me. I like Cry For You as much as anyone but leaning so heavily on it means they're not really stretching their songwriting abilities, and I know she's "just" a feature but I'd have loved a bit more of Rina's vocals. It's also just too short, I know streaming and tiktok like that but it could use another verse. I'm still gonna listen to it for like a week straight, because I love them both and it's still good, but it's just not quite what it could be.

https://youtu.be/VJGCeAWIfEA New Utada album is really good, it definitely fits right in with the nineties sound that they came up with but it’s modern enough that it doesn’t sound like it’s out of touch. One Last Kiss is still a perfect song and now having a whole album around it puts it in an interesting new light. Also they did an interview with Billboard about the new album and in it they talk a little more about coming out as non-binary.
