Trying to get into the wonderfully nerdy world of Dungeon Synth.

Made a very rough demo:
https://m.soundcloud.com/ilizarov/d...=social_sharing
I need to re-record the fake xylophone.

I have a vague idea of doing a casette where each track is a level of a dungeon starting with the crypt. Each track being bridged with a short bit transition if sound effects signifying the hero traveling downwards and each track having a gimmick like the water level being made mostly from samples of running water with some underwater bits where the sound is muffled . Ending with a temple level that's just a short chant played into and recorded in a space like Alan Lucier's I am Sitting in a Room until it becomes an endless cacophony of feedback.

This is an extremely good concept for a dungeon synth release and I love the idea

okay so when varg vikernes was in prison the only instrument he was allowed to have was synthesizers so… okay so i need to go back further. varg vikernes, also known as burzum was a part of the norwegian black metal scene but after burning down some churches and murdering euronymous for among some other things being a communist…

euronymous was in a band called mayhem and after another band member killed himself he posed the body for a photo and then made necklaces out of pieces of his skull and i think i’m getting off track.

anyway the music burzum made in prison on synthesizer became classified as “dungeon synth” because it kinda sounds like medieval music.

All right. It's Saturday night; I have no date, a two-liter bottle of Shasta and my all-Rush mix-tape... Let's rock.

I have three half finished tracks for my dungeon synth album thanks for reminding me. They’re all programmed into the qy700. Actually two of them are pretty cool

Here’s my fav dungeon synth

https://youtu.be/DffQVP6UqVQ

But to answer the question for real it’s a genre that was originally made by black metal artists making “dark ambient” music but mostly just imagine role playing game music from the nineties and there you go

Edit qy 100, not the 700. Wishful thinking on my part. Although now may be the time to buy one since I just sold the TR-8

From my point of view, whereas synthwave was metal dudes making retro 80s electronic synth music, dungeon synth is metal dudes making fake classical music on 90s era digital rompler synths. I might be overly reductive, but

Hey Mortiis was making kitschy medieval ambient on his Roland JV-30 a couple years before neo-nazi arsonist/murder Christian "Count Grishnack" Vikernes started messing with tape and a toy synth in prison. Also Mortiis was doing so while wearing s goblin mask and chainmail.

If anyone is into dark ambient then I really recommend the Cryo Chamber youtube channel/label (they have a bunch of stuff on bandcamp)

I like the YouTube channel especially because it has some cool mixes on there, often based around a theme. There's dungeony sounding stuff, post apocalyptic ones and my personal favourite "music for abandoned hospitals".
Plus theres a few collaborative pieces based around Cthulu.

I added a intro and cleaned up the xylophone a bit. Both of which makes a huge difference.

IT just sort of ends in some random noise which doesn't really work. I'm probably going to make or source some sound effects to convey the hero fighting skeltal warriors as the floor collapses under him and he plunges to the Flooded Catacombs below.

As for levels after that I'm thinking two or of the following:
-Magma Chamber
Big fiery sounding drone.
-Ice Caves
Cold echo-y plinks.
-Goblin Mines
Picks as percussion, make a few squeals here and there.
-Infested Cavern
Something spidery with sampled waterphone and slithering sounds

depending on what works when I actually start working on them.

Then the Profane Temple which leads into the Abyssal Depths which I envision as a sort of mix between Sunn O))) and Pete Shelley's underrated kitchen oscillator album Sky Yen.

While the varg poo poo is a big reason it's popular with metal guys, aesthetically the easiest way to think of dungeon synth is crpg vaporwave, pretty much nostalgia for something that never existed plus romplers.

Settled on the MPC One, it solves everything I needed it to, from ditching the PC, being a hub to my synths and using the auto sample to clone patches from my analogue synth.

The pads do gather dust quickly though...

Whelp! I killed my Rings kit, I think.

Got the reflow station, was able to get the chip out, flipped it around, soldered it back in, plugged it in and POP!

A resistor blew. Smoke poured out, and now it looks pregnant.

Looking again, I think either legs are bent on the chip, or the pads have migrated together. Tried pushing things around with tweezers and while heating it with the iron, but no good. I think I busted the chip and the PCB maybe.

I'm putting Rings away for now. Maybe if the chip shortage ever ends, I'll get a new PCB and new everything except for jacks and pots and give this another try.

I could've bought a nanoRings on Reverb for $169.

Yup. I’ve basically spent the rest of the evening stewing over it. It’s fine, I just bit off more than I can chew.

When it comes to surface mount, it seems there is a hierarchy, from easiest to hardest:

1) Nonlinear Circuits stuff - 0805 sized components, no microprocessors
2) Ornament and Crime - 0805 sized components, but has microprocessors
3) Mutables diy without microprocessors - 0603 sized components, stuff like Ripples, Branches.
4) Mitables diy with microprocessors - all the cool oscillators/sound sources, like Rings, Edges, Clouds, etc. 0603 sized components.

Through sheer dumb luck I started with an NLC Divide & Conquer, had no problems with it, and went a little nuts due to a 25% off coupon and got a Ripples and Rings kit. I don’t know why I grabbed Rings instead of a uO_c. I really hosed myself there.

My Ripples build mostly worked, I just needed to reflow some of the Resonance circuit and it was fine. I said in this very thread, “I should hold off on the Rings,” I knew on some level I wasn’t ready, but like a baby I couldn’t stand just having it without building it and plunged in.

So now I’ve learned. I touched the hot stove. Now I’ll back the gently caress off, go back to through-hole for a bit, grab a uO_c kit next time there’s a sale, and hopefully in a year or two, I can source ICs myself and try Rings again with a new PCB, and my own parts instead of a kit.

Then if that works, I’ll do a uBurst, then an Edges, then… :unsmigghh:
