casino royale is so good that i actually kind of like the poker scene. the hands are so absurd that it loops around to being fun

the hands aren’t even what’s wrong with it really it’s that it turns into a Phil Helmuth Intro To Texas Hold Em video

i really don't give a poo poo about watching poker, to me the point of the card playing scenes is supposed to be that his entire character is swagger and luck, he's not a good card player, he just wins because he's james bond

yeah that’s why his game’s baccarat

the best thing about poker in movies is that the plot always turns around one player having an incredibly obvious "tell" that no one has ever noticed in all the time that this person has been playing super high level poker. john malkovich in rounders with his oreos is a perfect example

i get why they do it - its so theres something obvious enough in the movie that everyone in the audience will understand what is happening, the same way every car/race chase scene in a movie is decided by showing someone stomping on the gas pedal extra hard and pulling away - but its still funny

indigi posted:

exactly, it's an absurdly simple game of chance, it exists to show us bond being a stone cold badass in the face of chance and winning, then we move on. if you make fully a third of your film about him playing cards it tends to drag a bit.

yeah, you need that sort of visual shorthand for the audience, at which point maybe find something else to do for 40 minutes rather than a high budget caricature of ESPN 8

the man from U.N.C.L.E. was that.

visually it was great too, except guy richie's editing style absolutely does not work for a 60s period piece

there's a soviet movie called "Strangers Among Friends" that is kind of a combination espionage movie and western. it's set in the soviet hinterlands just after the civil war, about a bunch of officials who have to figure out how to get a train car's worth of gold bricks to moscow. part western, part john le carre mole hunt. it's pretty sweet, i think it's on youtube

i think it's revolver where the director commentary has guy ritchie genuinely thinking he's the first person ever to use chess as a metaphor in a movie.

he also thinks the ideal way to see it is to watch it once, then watch it again with the commentary so he can explain it to you, and then watch it a third time with no commentary so that you can bask in how amazing the movie truly is.

bond is a sociopath and the character is and always has been a reflection of the mid-century attitudes about masculinity and women

daniel craig made a great point about not making a female bond. make a better character, if that's what you want, because bond is a very specific one, and it's not really one to rehabilitate like that.

oh yeah & they did ok with the sociopath angle w casino royale tho he still came off too empathetic imo

even the worst sitcom is better cause the plot doesnt really matter and theres rarely important visual detail

bond feels a bit tapped out at this point, if you diverge too much it's not really a bond film, but what more is there to say?

id love more spy films like tinker tailor or the lives of others. smoke filled rooms, lots of brown furniture, exactly 2 gunshots
