We did not read Ethan Frome in my 11th grade American Literature class. We did, however, read The Scarlet Letter, which is an absolute turd of a book. The lesson here is that if you have to read any book about some dour New Englanders, brother, it's gonna suck!NRVNQSR posted:I think reading Ethan Frome in school is probably a mostly American-exclusive thing? What's the endgame supposed to be, here? Phantom reads the whole thing and goes "welp, guess I won't," rendering this entire arc pointless? Or forges ahead anyway with a two-panel "And He Did" anticlimax? Or some SHOCKING TWIST only made possible by this ridiculous, straight-rear end-seeing-the-future deus ex machina poo poo? I'm just invested enough in the outcome to be really loving annoyed with how they've chosen to get there.

The lesson here is that if you have to read any book about some dour New Englanders, brother, it's gonna suck! Friendly reminder for people new to the thread that the Peanuts kids are all part of a government research program designed to breed eternally young supersoldiers (also other genetic abominations) and are living on a military base somewhere that functions as a fake town where their development (or lack thereof) can be monitored. The program was pretty lovely though and ultimately failed in it's intended purpose which is why the kids all stop aging around 9 years old and are kind of messed up. Evidence: -The kids clearly all age into the same age cohort but don't progress further including many who are introduced as literal babies. -In addition to seeing the kids age in real time people will also occasionally comment on the year or current events which are always those happening at the time the strip was printed in. Which means time is passing normally and not being extended out for dramatic effect. -Snoopy evolves over the course of the strip from a normal dog into something somewhat resembling a person. Eventually he is capable of sentient thought and writing books. -There is at least one tree in town that is sentient, can move, and has a real beef with kites for some reason. -Many of the kids posses unusual talents. Schroeder is a piano prodigy, Lucy is a shrewd manipulator, and Linus is shown later in the early strips to have superhuman intelligence. -Many of the kids experience mental instability indicative of either bad genetics or just not coping well with being a 40 year old elementary student. For example CB is depressed, Lucy is a sociopath, and Linus has an inclination towards violence and conspiratorial thinking. -Lucy at one point confirms that her grandmother worked with the military in some capacity during WWII. Which does... interesting things to the timeline but I won't get into that now. The important thing is that she has a family member with military connections which you'd expect if the strip takes place on a military facility of some kind. -Lucy herself is confirmed in one strip to be taking monthly checks from the CIA for an undisclosed reason (my guess is doing some MK Ultra poo poo on CB) -Some of the kids have literal numbers for names, 555 95472 being the most prominent. OPEN YOUR EYES SHEEPLE! (No I won't ever shut up about this. Weird Peanuts lore too fun to not bring up when given an opportunity.) readingatwork fucked around with this message at 04:29 on Jan 22, 2022 |

I've forgotten almost all of my childhood and what I do remember is a hazy mess, but the only books I remember reading in school for English class were Johnny Tremain and A Tale of Two Cities. I didn't care much for either one. I'm glad this woman is as unamused and tired of this guy's bullshit as we are, though we're probably supposed to hate her rather than thinking she's the only good character. readingatwork posted:-There is at least one tree in town that is sentient, can move, and has a real beef with kites for some reason. That would explain why we never see Rerun and Linus/Lucy together, they don't want Linus to know that they're trying to replace him, and they want to make sure that Lucy's abuse doesn't cause Rerun to fail the same way Linus did.

Hell, my niece and nephew go to the same drat restaurant every chance they get to pick eat-out dinner, and despite having done so for years, and they are teenagers and one old enough to drive, they still couldn't remember where the drat place was. Two miles from their house, it may as well have been another country. I remember driving in two or three cities before we had Google Maps or Mapquest, and it was insane trying to remember where the streets were. My overall city is based on a grid system, so easy enough if you know where you're going. But driving at night when you can't remember if Stapley is west or east of Chandler Heights is something else. Not to mention you can't ask anyone for help since you're not supposed to be there in the first place.

When I started driving, I definitely remember it taking a little while for me to develop a full grasp of how to get places I was already familiar with. As a passenger you get used to certain landmarks, but it's not until you're driving yourself that there's an actual incentive to remember exactly which turns and exits to use or how places actually are located in relation to each other. Even if you know it's easy to second guess yourself if you're nervous. Anyway the real issue with this Foob strip in particular is that it highlights even more clearly that this is an old strip in reruns. I can't remember the last time I saw a paper road map. And there's also the factor that he's driving a different car for the first time, a car that's much more powerful than Mom's station wagon. A car that his father is deeply protective of. A car that he knows he wouldn't be trusted to be driving at all if not for the strange circumstances. And he knows his dad is waiting on tenterhooks at home, counting the minutes it should take for him to get back. He should have been back by this time and here he is on the highway, helplessly speeding out of town going further and further from home and oh god he's never actually driven out this way before, especially not at night, how does he even get home from here, Dad's going to murder him for this! There's plenty to criticize Lynn about, but I think this storyline is fine. Bizarro The Family Circus
