Prior to Omnicron the latest research was that vaccines protect you from catching or spreading only for about three months. Afterwards you catch and spread at roughly the same level as the unvaccinated.

Of course they obviously keep you alive better, but if we’re talking about infectiousness, that was the research.

I know we often get questions about n95 mask reuse itt so here's a nice little news article that basically asked some random experts

https://www.king5.com/article/news/verify/coronavirus-verify/yes-you-can-reuse-kn95-and-n95-masks/536-46fd5aa0-7b25-4033-97c5-91769119ed41

The short of it:
1) Put it in a paper bag between uses, to keep dust off and to let it dry out. Don't use a ziploc because that would seal in moisture.
2) Switch it out when it looks dirty, damp, or damaged. If you're wearing it at work every day, that's probably 1 week of usage
3) The risk of fomite transmission is not high but you should still avoid touching your face

I was just looking at the latest official covid case stats from the Irish government and it's really interesting to compare the ratios of cases : hospitalizations : ICU : Deaths between the different waves of covid here.

https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory...-%20website.pdf

Here's a graph showing the different waves:

The first one would have been April 2020, and the peak there would have been a gross underestimate because testing capacity at the time was tiny - you had to have multiple, specific symptoms to even get a test, We're coming down from wave 5 at the moment, and testing was also completely overwhelmed then too.

But this graph I thought was very encouraging:

To my unprofessional eye, it looks like a combo of vaccinations plus omicron being different, the chances of becoming severely ill or dying for any vaccinated person, in any age group is massively decreased.

Update! The judge agreed to impose the temporary block on the staff going to work at the other hospital so now they're stuck working for neither of them until the case ends

quote:

Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Mark McGinnis granted ThedaCare's request and held an initial hearing Friday morning. The case will get a longer hearing at 10 a.m. Monday.

McGinnis told lawyers for both health systems they should try to work out a temporary agreement by the end of the day Friday about the employees' status until Monday's hearing.

Otherwise, he said, the order prohibiting them from going to work at Ascension would be final until a further ruling was made. That means the seven health care workers would not be working at either hospital on Monday.

And a few more details about the situation came out:

quote:

Each of them were employed at-will, meaning they were not under an obligation to stay at ThedaCare for a certain amount of time.

quote:

Ascension had offered the employees a better benefits package that ThedaCare did not match, Muth said.

Timothy Breister, an Appleton resident and one of the seven employees involved in the systems' dispute, submitted a letter to McGinnis Friday before the hearing describing his experience.

One of his colleagues received an offer from Ascension that was attractive "not just in pay but also a better work/life balance," which caused others on his team to apply, Breister wrote.

After approaching ThedaCare with the chance to match the offers they'd been given, Breister wrote that they were told "the long term expense to ThedaCare was not worth the short term cost," and no counter-offer would be made.

can't comment on wisconsin law in particular but low level judges both can do and do do a lot of dumb things that'll probably get overturned the second anyone in a higher court reviews them

and yeah, there's a reason this kind of thing is literally in law school textbooks, courts don't actually have the administrative ability in practicality to force people to do a job they don't want to do, even if the law allowed for it, which it generally does not

Which is bullshit. It is the facility the patient had a relationship with and they are failing to continue to provide medical care so it is on them. This isn’t a private practice where the doctor vanished while his patients got no notice he was leaving.

The order actually doesn't prevent them from quitting, all of the employees are effectively unemployed at this point. It's hosed up.

These kinds of employment contracts do exist, e.g. you can't accept an equivalent position for N years, but it sounds like these employees don't have such contracts. And for the record, the mere existence of these situations is also hosed up and is what actually created this mess. ThedaCare's executives know all of this and are just being vindictive, knowing that a court may permit the injunction while taking time to review the facts. And sure enough, that's what happened

Hopefully much much more, because what I want to see happen is A) the injunction ends quickly, B) the former employees sue ThedaCare for lost compensation during the time that they were barred from working but are given a fuckload more than that since ThedaCare is just being vindictive and needs to be made an example of, and C) the new employer sues ThedaCare for that lost time as well

It really is impressive how much they screwed themselves over by not matching the offer of the staff members who were looking to leave. Losing an entire interventional radiology department like that causes a loss of income far greater than just what the interventional radiology department brings in. Emergent medical issues like strokes or traumas often require interventional radiology procedures like embolizations or thrombectomies so patients may bypass that hospital en route to a hospital with those capabilities or sent to one after a problem requiring interventional radiology is identified. This results in the hospital losing income from the rest of the patient's hospitalization which in these cases may include expensive orthopedic surgeries or length stays in the ICU. I don't think they would have legal standing to claim this but they may be trying to build a case that Ascension poached the employees and claim a loss of income from that.

If anyone is curious ThedaCare made 28 million in profit last year.
