Car play is extremely underwhelming and does not get enough attention to improve it.

My aftermarket wireless CarPlay head unit will not launch to the Apple CarPlay interface unless you acknowledge the "don't watch movies while driving" warning message. It also won't do the above if you:

- didn't leave an app running CarPlay full screen
- used your phone at any point between turning the car off and turn into it on again

Despite numerous support tickets with Pioneer, this is apparently expected behaviour despite every single other wireless CarPlay device automatically launching correctly.

It also uses what feels like a 100mhz cpu for its native OS so it's sluggish as gently caress to do anything, like say launch CarPlay manually (about 15 seconds total spread over 2 taps on the screen, despite the audio source on the head unit playing from CarPlay, so it is automatically connecting.

The head unit cost nearly as much as my iPhone 12.

Yeah I keep seeing YouTube videos for Android Auto vs Car Play and pretty much all of them lose to Android. They’re lucky I have absolutely zero allegiance to Google and my whole house is Apple and I live in a major metro so I don’t get the issues the people doing these videos in Canadian islands do who use Google calendar and stuff. I dig the little 3D buildings and stop sign/red light camera stuff they’ve probably had for years.

In fairness I’m just relieved that Focus fixed all (most?) the problems with DND While Driving had for yeeeeears that were never fixed. Maybe I’ll just stop using maps for my daily commute because really that’s a weird loving thing to do anyway. Thank you Apple for forcing me to correct my OCD through lack of making your software work correctly for me.

My Alpine wireless CarPlayhas been 100% fine, the display response is fine, it connects reliably (sometimes too reliably, if my wife drove last it'll connect to her phone that's still in the house when I start the car), and no nanny screens to click through.

My only issue with it has been Apple's shuffling siri commands with every OS release, I'll get used to a specific phrase to get it to play the playlist I want and with the next release siri will be all "why you talking nonsense??" and I have to spend a bunch of time figuring out what the new password to shuffle my music is. But that's not CarPlay, that's just Apple being Apple.

it is totally insane that you dont get any notifications on the head unit in car play mode if the app itself does not support carplay. the notifications arrive on the phone but because its on carplay it wont light up the display on the phone or even trigger the alert on my apple watch.

and yes, DND while driving is off. it is always off.

Huh, that’s odd. I have wired CarPlay and will get notifications on-screen for apps that support CarPlay, but my watch gets notifications for any apps that don’t.

I have a cheapie Pioneer wired CarPlay reciever that works great, but when I added an aftermarket wireless kit(claimed compatibility with my head unit) to it, it did most of the same bad behavior as yours does and I just deal with plugging it in every time.

I think many of the aftermarket wireless CarPlay receivers and dongle setups are just not ready for prime time, it seems like it’s just not able to get enough throughput over Bluetooth to be responsive enough.

My car didn’t come with wireless CarPlay standard, I’ve looked at the adapter, but I’ve figured they’re not worth the effort. Since as far as my car is concerned, the wired CarPlay would always be plugged in, it would just end up confusing if I needed to use the car system for anything

I use this wireless adapter for my VW and it works great. There is a half second of delay in switching songs manually and sometimes it doesn't load everything in Waze, but otherwise it connects by itself and I haven't plugged in for a couple of years.

Ugh, under 15.1 I could say “hey Siri rate this song 4 stars,” and now on 15.2.x, all I get is “sorry I can’t do that.”

Star ratings are so much better than love/dislike and I hate how they chip away at the star functionality every release. Like, what’s the point of removing those 10 lines of code?

I'm utterly bemused by iOS forcing me to keep all photos one undivided "roll", imcluding pics I've taken, amusing stuff and porn.

Then constantly adding "widgets" that access my photos and randomly show me porn on my homescreen. This is not a better user experience than android. If I want to look at something I'll open it, I don't need some officious program shoving it in my eyes

It’s definitely a conceptual shift, yeah. I like it but it’s been like this like my whole adult life.

Keep porn in another app (or hidden) if you must keep it at all. You can also set the widgets to show certain albums instead of all photos ever.

Photos is kind of a mess on Apple ecosystem and needs a major overhaul.

There's finally an option that shows you "shared" content in your camera roll, etc. but it still doesn't handle shared albums correctly.

Being in a family just creates you an empty shared album called Family with all the people in it. It doesn't actually do anything.

Let's say you fastidiously share all your photos in the Family album or another shared album, for example a family holiday. Any memories etc. only come from your own camera roll.

I prefer it this way tbh. Sometimes photos fit multiple albums but I wouldn’t want to duplicate them.

Although far better customisation in the photos widget about excluding albums or certain people/tags from the big features home screen images would be nice though.

I remember hoping that they were going to add the ability to add on-the-fly Smart Playlists, like "Hey Siri, play songs by Some Artist rated four stars or more"... but they haven't even added the ability to create or edit Smart Playlists on iOS.

I figured they didn't do that just because nobody cared about it, but if they're removing functionality I worry they're going to someday remove star ratings completely, and possibly Smart Playlists too! Which really, like you're suggesting, would wreck my ability to listen to the music I want to hear at any given time. A boolean love/not love state is completely insufficient. Not to mention the fact that selecting something as "Love" makes you get more of that kind of music in the generated For You playlists, so it's not a standalone concept.

Apparently the iTunes folder on my PC still has a bunch of old app .ipa files of stuff that hasn't been available on the App Store for years. No idea why it's there, but is there anything I can do with them? One of them is for a game that almost certainly wasn't updated for 64-bit but I'd love to be able to throw it onto my (non-jailbroken) device and play it again.

I have never had a widget added without me actively adding it, so idk how it's "constantly" adding widgets. It would be nice if the photo widget would let you point it at a specific album or something instead of the camera roll, though.

Apple's idea about what we take pictures of does not match reality.

If the porn is downloaded, the preference is that you use the files app for those images (you can now save images to files and not only to photos like it used to be).

It is an oversight that you can't either mark certain photos as private or 'not for rotation' in the photos widget which is otherwise a really nice addition to the Home Screen.

Whether it's your secret spicy photos or photos of an ex or a dead dog or evidence you gathered from an accident or whatever you don't want to delete from your camera but you don't want surfaced at random, Apple should revisit the widgets. I mean even if we could point the photos widget to a folder instead of the whole camera roll, that would be a big improvement.

There's a "Hide" function under the Share menu that does exactly what you want.

You can 'Hide' photos by tapping a photo and looking for the option in the share menu. Idiotic place to put it, but the feature is there. It'll put the photos in a Hidden album that you can also hide/unhide.

It's clearly not designed to be a warehouse for porn though. It feels like it's meant to be a soft deletion, a way to get rid of uncomfortable images without permanently losing them.

I'll add that using the Hide function removes those photos from everywhere *except* the Hidden album, which means if you want to see your accident photos, you'll need to also see your naked wife, which is fine for you, but may present issues if you need to share photos in person. (Though you can put those photos in an album and unhide them if necessary.)

I don't know if you're kidding, but go to the calendar app -> tap Calendars at the bottom -> tap the (i) button to edit a calendar. There's a "Shared with" field that lets you share that calendar with somebody else. My wife and I have a couple of shared calendars so that we can both throw events on them, whether it be for work or for the kids.
