A played a few hours of Mario Kart online with friends a couple weekends ago and I'm still blown away by how gorgeous and fun that game is. It came out like a decade ago! How does it look so good and run so smoothly!?

MK8........ what a game.

Electrodome, Mount Wario, the airport...... and even all the retro tracks which they completely remade unlike earlier games, it's all so god dang gorgeous.

I don't believe a word of this, there's no way you have friends

Hot Take: Banjo-Tooie is better than Banjo-Kazooie because Banjo and Kazooie talk way more in the sequel than in the first game, and helps to show their personality and characterize them. Also I just liked the worlds better than in B-K

I don't think that's that hot of a take. I personally prefer the first game just because I think the worlds being smaller gives them a better focus and makes the levels feel more cram packed with stuff and secrets around every corner, whereas Tooie's levels are big for really no reason with a lot of empty space, like a ton of Mayahem Temple is just wasting time walking to places where you can actually do things. That said, I do think the themes of the levels in Tooie is a lot cooler. Witchyworld is my favorite level and I think is just as good as any of BK's levels, I also really like Hailfire Peaks but just because I'm a sucker for fire/ice combined levels. Grunty Industries can gently caress off though.

I mentioned the Tetris99 theme was bad, but I was only referring to the visuals; near the bottom of the playing field, it's kind of difficult, at least for me, to easily discern where my piece is going to land. I usually get it right but it's not AS immediate and contrasting as the Splatoon, SMB, DK, LoZ, or Gameboy themes are.

Also, I played Screen Cheat with my sons (7 and 4 years old) and still had a blast. My 7yo is surprisingly adept at it.

I have no kids (yet!) It'll be a while until we can play things together, if they show up.

Huge fan of Mario Kart 8. I always like to picture where the courses are actually located in relation to each other. Like, where in the Mushroom Kindom is Ice Ice Outpost? Is it near Sherbert Land? Or is it close to the Hyrule Circuit and that's why they're in the same Cup?

Look it's simple. You know how long it takes Capcom to create a skeleton and attack animations and AI all that visual flair for each monster they make in Monster Hunter? Why can't Nintendo just do that 300+ times for a real time combat open world game while also balancing all of it? It's simple!

You joke but they actually make enough money that it would be a worthwhile long term project, as Pokemon Company could use those animations not just for multiple games, but as the basic framework for new attacks and behaviors for as yet unexplored genres.

Yeah this is how I feel about it. I know every level from the original BK by heart, whereas Grunty Industries is just a confusing mess, and I still have no idea where the gently caress anything is in Terrydactyland despite having played Tooie just as much. The levels in Tooie are just too big and don't have any rhyme or reason to them.

On one hand, a 30 year old 90 billion dollar franchise should be able to do more than recycling already extremely basic animations in a turn-based fighter

On the other hand, 45 year old superfans don't seem to mind and are comfortable with buying the same game every 6 months, which is why the franchise is worth 90 billion dollars

It is impossible to say who is correct and no judgement should be passed on either party.

The reason why the Pokemon franchise is is worth a billion dollars is because of merchandising, comparatively the games make very little money, much like how the Disney corporation makes far more off toys and other branded objects than they do their movies. So there's much less motivation to make the games good than there is to just make sure that the games keep getting churned out so there's more things to merchandise.

That's capitalism!

I am going to play and most likely enjoy "Pokemon Legends: Arceus" though, so I guess I'm just as much to blame for the state of things as anyone else who's ever bought a pencil with a Pikachu one it.

Kazooie is obviously better than Tooie which was the absolute nadir of Rare's collectathon bollocks world design

Still overall an enjoyable experience when I played through them both a couple of years ago on Rare Replay but a lot more of a slog in many places

The roster of Pokémon is so bloated at this point, they wouldn’t need to animate so many Pokémon if they hadn’t added in so many filler Pokémon over the years. I’m sure that every Pokémon is someone’s favorite, but there are exponentially more people who would use a Pokémon like Infernape vs something like Stantler or whatever. They should just animate the popular Pokémon first and then never animate the unpopular filler types.

Can I get a recommendation for games with a kid? My 6-year-old is quarantined for 10 days and we're going to be stuck inside a lot because it's deathly cold.

So far she has loved Mario kart, loved Captain toad (insists on being the assist player) and thought Trine 2 was fun but stressful. She likes gentle platformers and exploration games, and anything we play would have to be co-op. Any difficult platforming stuff is right out. Rayman legends for instance was deemed cute but far too difficult.

The next things I could think of were Mario Odyssey or maybe the Kirby game? Mario 3D world? I don't know which is likely the most approachable or if there are other things out there.

Basically if I could subscribe to endless Captain Toad levels that would be both of our dreams.

Luigi's Mansion 3 if ghosts aren't too intense for a 6-year-old. Similar kind of 3D puzzle solving itch as Captain Toad, I think.

Part Time UFO is a fun coop game. It can get a little tricky if you're going for 100% but just beating it normally shouldn't be too bad.

Wuppo is a sort Paper Mario-ish metroidvania, with a coop mode where player 2 can control an invincible bird who helps out in combat. There's some bosses but a ton of the game is just exploring, talking to people, and doing random sidequests and minigames

Kirby Star Allies, and the upcoming game will work for sure. Kirby is tailor made for a young audience. Checking the SNES app is good advice.

I'd also suggest Untitled Goose Game for just being a laugh. It's co-op and you can do everything as they just honk and harass people.
