I keep botching my third guess. Either putting a letter where I know it doesn't go or leaving out a letter I know is there and having a "no wait gently caress" moment after hitting enter.

I personal find getting the vowels out of the way early very helpful. Once you zero in on where they are the possibilities really narrow down.

You have to use all hints on hard mode so you can't go wait gently caress forgot to put a letter where it was green, or oh poo poo I already put that letter in that spot and it was yellow.

I think you are trying to do hard mode on easy, so just turn hard mode on.

hard mode = you have to use your green and yellow letters in your next guesses. it might not sound hard until you get in a situation where you're completely stuck, and using a step to test out other possible letters/words without having to include every single one of the correctly guessed ones (mainly yellow) helps a ton with discovering a letter or two that you couldn't figure out. you don't get to do that in hard mode
