And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Neon Golden is 20 years old. I thought about just posting the whole album, cause man was that a huge part of 2002 for me, but decided to just post my favorite song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNVHwqs0978

I remember that the album got so big that it basically created a whole little ecosystem of rising ships (13 & God, Themselves, Doseone). I also remember when Dax Pierson had his van accident, and how big an indie story it became at least in part because of the Notwist connection.

Thanks for this. This is one of those albums that I used to listen to a lot back in the day, but when I made the transition from listening to music on iTunes to using Spotify, I kind of forgot about it. Lately I've been trying to remember all of the music like that.

imho notwist are criminally overlooked! I don't know anyone who remembers them, despite Neon Golden being one of the greats of the 00s

Also, they released an album in 2021 which was surprisingly good!

I didn't know this was coming out (thought I listened to...most of her WTF interview, so I assumed something was coming.) I saw "These Days" and got real excited for a R.E.M. cover. And it wasn't that one, its Jackson Browne.

I want to ask something bizarre ITT, because I'm a bit toasted and can't really think of a better thread for it - this is what came up in every recent forums search for the band's name, and I thought it more apt than starting a new thread for a band whose success largely came a few years ago (but I understand they've got some new material, so I'll check that out). Anyway, What's the deal with Sleigh Bells?

They're a band that I've really enjoyed in the past as a best friend would have tunes like 'Infinity Guitars' or 'Demons' on heavy rotation. Recently I've been watching Yellowjackets and it occurred to me, "what was that really loud electro-pop group with the heavy use of like, 'high school homecoming' imagery? also satanism?" So I revisited their work, and I find their whole thing fascinating. Or maybe it's not 'their whole thing', like I said my exposure is limited - I like what I've heard, and it's on my mind right now as a curiosity.

So what's the deal? I don't know if they've since changed their image, but I'm not misremembering here (right?) that a large part of their aesthetic was this overt 'teenage americana' with a sinister undercurrent to it. Lyrical themes of teenage anxieties, the album artwork of Treats (cheerleaders in formation with their faces scratched out), more cheerleader uniforms and varsity jackets in their videos and live shows... plus this ever-present ominous occult language and juxtaposition of violence. Is there something going on here, like, was Treats actually a concept album that went way over my head? Is it the artists drawing influence from their past and careers (Krauss was a schoolteacher, wasn't she)?

Maybe I'm just dwelling too much on 'Rill Rill' and one or two other big tunes, and drawing my own inspiration from having watched Yellowjackets recently, but there seems to be like a teenage satanic blood pact thing going on, for lack of a better term. I really dig it. They're great and I should probably listen to more of their work next time I'm in front of the stereo.

I don't have anything insightful to add, I just want to say that one of my favorite things about music is how artists like Sleigh Bells, Magdalena Bay, etc. create these little micro aesthetics that draw from various influences. Like it can always just be about the lyrics, or the melodies, or the songwriting, but I am interested by artists who try to do more to pull in other mediums — album art, music videos, fashion — to direct your imagination to the world they are trying to create.

Along the lines of what Mister Speaker described — a kind of twisted academic fever dream — does anyone remember Deadsy's brightly colored goth-industrial prep-school Commencement aesthetic? That always resonated with me.

yeah ok ok yeah

Satanic panic is sleigh bells being cool and nostalgic because it really does speak to such s certain time in Western, mostly western Christianity/Baptist culture. I know it still bubbles up in South Africa. It was quite big in nz here too. The principal of our school would go on screeds about how eastern sorcerers summoned Pokémon so demons could creep into our souls. Sleigh Bells is like hey beautiful

My experience with Sleigh Bells is that they have one album you really like and then the rest are okay but still sound samey. The twist is that everyone likes a different album as their one.

Sleigh Bells was maybe the second or third experience where I had the advance thought "Yeah, this album is probably all I'm going to need from this band." Such a perfect encapsulation of such a specific aesthetic that there probably wasn't anywhere to evolve and any revolution/overhaul probably wouldn't get an automatic benefit of the doubt.

Go! Team was the first, which is ironic as they were probably my Sleigh Bells before Treats.

I'm still sore about missing that tour... I am a crazy Depeche Mode fan who has loved reading Warpaint talk about Violator in their interviews, I lost it when I heard they were working with Flood, and then... I couldn't make the show :negative:

I felt somewhat remunerated when they played the Black Cat in DC on an off day during their tour with MGMT and I was able to get the one missing autograph (Theresa) on my copy of The Fool
