I recently listened to "Against the Odds" https://wondery.com/shows/against-the-odds/ I like the topics discussed but I'm not sure I like the choice to dramatize the stories. Can anyone recommend similar podcasts? A smart well told survival story podcast seems interesting to me.

I know this isn't spectacularly helpful advice but the official Google Podcast app seemed like hot garbage when they first launched it and I'd never heard any word of it becoming great since then, so maybe try a different podcast app. The two I alternate between have been Pocket Casts and Podcast Addict. I like the latter because it lets me filter out downloads based on keywords like "Don't download any episode that says 'preview' or 'minisode' or 'live' in the title", and also lets me download the next unheard episode starting with the very first episode of a show instead of whatever the newest one is.

Brain In A Jar posted:Unprompted, but I've been listening through a whole lot of Plumbing the Death Star in the last six months, and even though the name is a Kevin Smith joke, it's genuinely funny. Three Australian dipshits try to puzzle out how they think they'd navigate pop culture scenarios. I originally came to their show because they had a show about some big nerd movie with a full reaction that was available to listen to after I watched the midnight release (because of Australia). I stuck around because of that (even though, until recently, they dropped the movie reviews, which they added again now on a separate feed) because their scenarios generally entertained me. I don't listen to every episode because I have too many podcasts to listen to but their absolute dumb nerd poo poo is high quality, very funny dumb nerd poo poo.

I gave it like 20 episodes before finally admitting that The Shrieking Shack just wasn't for me. Does anyone have any other podcasts in the same vein of analyzing the Harry Potter series from a critical eye? I just found it to be too mellow for my tastes most of the time, I need like 40% more energy to stay interested, it's like listening to chamomile tea in audio form. Along those lines, I started listening to Blank Check, if anyone has anything similar I'd love to hear it.

Somewhat a tangent as my recommendation is a new Netflix series, but it's based on the podcast Archive 81, which gets put forward as a recommendation pretty frequently. I honestly found the podcast to be mediocre thanks to rushed pacing, a failure to make the protagonists relatable, and edging too far into the cartoony "radio drama" style to be taken seriously. I bounced off the second season after the first episode or two as it only seemed to make these shortcomings worse, but maybe it turned things around later. The best thing the podcast has going for it is its premise and, whatdyaknow, in the hands of a competent screenwriter and director, has been turned into something really loving compelling. The protagonists feel like real, relatable people and the plot has enough breathing room to build up the horror without getting lost in the weeds. I'd initially turned it on to have something in the background while I played some dumb computer games, but it actually managed to grab my attention enough to set the keyboard aside and just watch the show. Giant caveat: I'm only halfway through and there's still plenty of time for the show to poo poo the bed, but the first four episodes, at least, are well worth a watch.

I’m looking for another video game podcast. I already listen to Retronauts, Watch Out For Fireballs, Axe of the Blood God and Get Played. I like to listen to episodes about games to see if wanna play it, or to finally play something in my backlog. Something like WOFF’s format would be nice, they just don’t cover current or upcoming games as often.

Hardcore gaming 101 can be hit or miss, depending heavily on who's hosting, but overall I enjoy it. The gimmick is they are ranking every single video game. So the first half is discussion on the episode's game, what it sets out to do and if it succeeds, then the second half is arguing whether it's better or worse than other games they've ranked

If you're into PC gaming i really like Crate & Crowbar too. The hosts are all British developers or games journalists and they have a refreshing lack of modern streamer/podcaster affectations or mannerisms.

Crate and Crowbar is great but FYI they recently changed their format. They've broadened their scope from PC gaming to just gaming on any platform, and the gaming pods are bi-weekly now. On the off-weeks they pick a film franchise or TV show and do a deep-dive on it, for example last week they decided to discuss the Daniel Craig era of bond films. It's still great discussion, just something to be aware of of you're clicking on random recent episodes expecting PC gaming talk. Someone recommended Pop Culture Happy Hour to me and I've been listening to a few random episodes. The content is good and the episodes are nice and short and succinct, but lol I think I might be a closet CHUD because I find the hosts insufferable for really superficial reasons that make my brain sound like an idiot in a comment section banging on about smug coastal elites. I know this is dumb and totally a me problem but it's interfering with my enjoying otherwise good discussion. Does anybody have any recs for similar podcasts with a long back catalogue that fully discuss with spoilers various TV shows, movies, occasionally videogames (but not necessarily since there are already a million game pods out there) but with hosts with... I dunno just a different style of talking? To echo what a previous poster was saying, the discussion style of the crate and Crowbar guys is more my style, they're enthusiastic (unlike, say, the bombast) but not "performative" - or whatever the word I'm looking for is - and sound exactly how you'd imagine they sound talking off-air down the pub over a few pints.

It's show specific, but if you like Always Sunny, the podcast the creators do is pretty much exactly that. A lot of fun behind the scenes discussion and storytelling, and then they get distracted and start arguing about the best way to park and are razzing each other and you realize their characters are recreating their real life friendships. It's really, really fun.

Haven't seen it. I'm more looking for stuff that I can scroll through a large back catalogue, see an episode for a show I've watched at some point in the past and click play for an in-depth spoilery discussion of the entire show that I can fall asleep to/have on in the background when driving or whatever.

Last Podcast on the Left will no longer be a Spotify exclusive, very cool. Apparently they made a deal with SiriusXM and there will be a live show each week. Pretty cool, that Spotify app never really worked for me, it still occassionally forgets the position where I stopped listening.

I’m very much enjoying hearing Nick Digilio again. He was the overnight host on WGN radio in Chicago, who then got unceremoniously dumped back in 2019 after 35 years with the station. Now he’s back as part of the Radio Misfits Podcast Network, and it’s so good.

I basically have been checking in on lpotl every month or two and getting caught up because the Spotify app sucks so much rear end.

Any recs for podcasts in the nerd talks at length about a single large subject genre? I'm already listening to History of Egypt, Tides of History, and History of English and I like how they're basically all information and there's just one host. It doesn't have to be history. I'm trying Secret History of Western Esoterism as well, but it might be too esoteric for me. Plus the interviews in the early episodes have terrible audio quality. Revolutions and History of Rome would be my go-to suggestions. Ghost Stories for the End of the World is quite good too. All the episodes are about CIA shenanigans or things people believe might be CIA shenanigans. Hardcore History is another option but some people don't care for the host's methods and the massively long gaps between episodes are annoying.

The Silt Verses has a second season on the way! They've got a teaser up, but oddly behind the Patreon pay wall. Questionable marketing strategy aside, I'm stoked because it's easily the best horror podcast I've listened to (just ahead of the creators' first, I Am In Eskew, and the Magnus Archives). I gave the first season another listen and it was just as strong as I remembered it, plus they must have gone back and fixed the audio issues where the volume levels were inconsistent. Just started into Malevolent. First episode is interesting and well-executed. They apparently have Patreon supporters vote on the character's next steps for each episode? Curious to see how it works out.

Not really a podcast, but I've started watching the Soft White Underbelly interviews on Youtube. It's basically an ongoing series of interviews with people on the fringes of society: hookers, dealers, pimps, thugs, junkies, etc. ... broken people from Skid Row and elsewhere. Since many people are feeling miserable these days, it helps when you see these people share their stories of life and suffering. Puts your own problems into perspective. Anyway, here are the ones I watched already, and can recommend. Frenchie the Escort is probably my favourite, it's 90 minutes long, but really takes off once she starts talking about her first "party". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW5PSU5ap5c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6igTJXcqvo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcVPIOCpygo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v-vAFzh1t4

Soft White Underbelly gives me really skeevy vibes. Like, misery porn for office workers to watch while slacking off at work. Their stories are important, but I dunno, I wish the interviewer was more "credentialed" for lack of a better word. He's just some guy, and there is no accountability for how he is getting these stories or treating these people.
|
# ? Feb 11, 2022 18:45 |
|
I get where you're coming from. But honestly I can't imagine a scenario where interviewing those people doesn't turn into misery porn for the average viewer. There are interviews with the creator on youtube, but I haven't watched them yet. Honestly, he strikes me like a guy that lives in LA and saw the growing population of homeless, and wanted to know their story. But considering all the dumb and reprehensible poo poo that is being done for clicks nowadays, it makes sense to be a little critical of the maker's ethics/philosophy/motivation.

I would like some recommendations. I've listened to less than an hour of podcast content since their inception mostly due to me being a stubborn rear end in a top hat and refusing to listen to them for a long, long time for "reason Now that I decided that I'd like to listen to something other than music 24/7, I find the variety overwhelming and I'm horrible at choosing them. The last two times I tried podcasts I picked something with an interesting description and then was quickly driven away. One was a true crime podcast and one of the hosts sounded like he was pinching his nose whenever he wasn't laughing like Lewis Scolnick from RotN. Holy hell it was grating. The other was a cryptid podcast where the voices were fine, but it was like an SA thread. It was ~30 minutes long and after a quick on-topic teaser, there was 10 minutes of really interesting KFC discussion. tl;dr Basically, I'm looking for anything that would have fit into the first few years of the PYF Unnerving Articles thread. Everything from cryptids to weird/unexplained topics whether they're probably fiction (Oak Island) or real (think Toynbee tiles, Centralia, PA, etc), mild conspiracy topics (like conspiracies surrounding JFK, but not gay frogs and lizard people conspiracies). True Crime murder mystery topics also fine as long as the host doesn't sound like a reject for the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears.

Ghost Stories for the End of the World would probably be up your alley. It's about conspiracy theories but ones you probably haven't heard of, like the murder of Aldo Moro or Charles Manson's connections to MKULTRA. The host is British and I can't tell the difference between all their regional accents so I don't know if he's a nerd, but the show does have a very spooky vibe.
