IMO, and based on his years of quietly shilling typical white conservative/republican-style Christianity and its "values," and based off his recent What I've Learned interview (which I skimmed in another post in here), I've ever more convinced that "Western values" is his version of a hodgepodge of White Jesus Christianity, Disney, and a bit post-Christian Roman something or other. Whatever it is, it ties back to Christianity in some way or other, and why he has such a stick up his rear end about non-Christian and atheist thinkers and ideas, despite those people often being white too. It's also why he hasn't bloviated on the Bhagavad Gita or Lotus Sutra or anything remotely "exotic," because it's also not Christian and white.

When I was a dumbshit objectivist-libertarian in my teens, I sort of vaguely remember "The West" being defined by other objectivists as palces (or cultures? countries?) where the dominating philosophy was based upon Aristotelian thought. Whatever the gently caress that means. gently caress, I must have been so punchable when I parroted that as a spotty, badly dressed 17-year old.

You can probably draw up an actual definition of "western culture" that makes sense, but there's no point in doing it in relation to Jorp's word salad spinning because what he means is the usual bullshit dogwhistle poo poo that conservatives always mean by "western culture": white people stuff with some token poo poo like Jazz and Blues to make them look less racist.

I was driving to get groceries yesterday and started trying to do a Jorp voice, just to myself, trying it out. Not quite Kermit, but close to it, plus, as a fellow Canadian, even HIS Canadian accent sounds funny to me, and I'm from the east. His accent is THE accent that people outside of Canada assume all Canadians sound like. Holy poo poo, it's annoying.

He over pronounces his long "O" sound, he uses "ah" instead of "a" (like for him, he wouldn't say 'plan', it'd be closer to 'plahn')... add that to his meandering way of putting sentences together, and you've got an impression.

If I get good at it, I'll post it or something, I don't know.

quote:

In the 1980s and 1990s, Singer decided to sell his soul and become a corporate shill. Despite not having published on atmospheric issues since the last decade with the exception of two papers, Singer entered the ozone fray and attempted to pass himself off as a cutting-edge researcher. He decided he didn't need no steenkin' peer review, employing the classic denialist tactic of side-stepping scientific journals to publish op-eds and give testimonies before Congress. He liberally quote mined the science on ozone depletion and claimed that the measurements were incorrect, that there had always been a hole in the ozone and it was natural. What he "forgot" to mention was that he was being heavily bankrolled by petroleum companies at the time, including Exxon and Shell, through his think tank called The Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP). Singer also downplayed the threat of acid rain in his role on the Acid Rain Peer Review Panel during this period and SEPP has been labeling acid rain as a fake crisis since then. As we now know, Singer was on the wrong side of history – in 1995, the scientists who discovered the chemistry behind the ozone hole were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work. Strike one.

In addition to ozone denial, Singer became involved in Philip Morris front groups as well as other tobacco-backed think tanks in the early 1990s. He helped lead the charge in second-hand smoke denial. He wrote a number of articles denying or minimizing any link between second-hand smoke and cancer and accused the EPA of cooking its data when it determined that second-hand smoke posed a risk. Singer, of course, denied any connection to tobacco companies.

Yeah, Twitter uses cookies to track how often you visit and gives you that pop-up when they feel you’ve read enough tweets for free. You can clear your browser cache and block Twitter from giving you cookies; I forget how but google should be able to give you instructions relevant to whatever browser you’re using.
