I get what you're saying and beleive me gently caress walmart, but this example is a building full of children and the elderly and disabled people and expectant mothers shopping for their babies. If that fire had been allowed to spread, people would likely have gotten hurt.

I don't give a drat about the toilet paper that was burning and I doubt that employee did either, really.

And due to how hosed everything in general is, there are probably thousands of people barely getting by who use that Walmart as their primary grocery store, and would be in serious distress if it burned down.

I used a fire extinguisher once at work to put out a trash can fire.

When the company person responsible for the extinguishers came by he said I should have just used a cup of water.

We used to see Kidde extinguishers break pretty frequently at UPS, I guess the way they packed them didn't do well with getting chucked ten feet at a time. Talk about an incredible clean up, they'd knock the neck off one tiny fire extinguisher and it would take an outbound belt down for ages while everyone tried to clean up. It was really exciting when it happened in a trailer, all of a sudden everything turns kind of yellow and breathing tastes like dying and you just kind of stumble towards the light.

Using a fire extinguisher rules. Using one to put out a fire is supremely satisfying. I'd put someone else's Walmart fire out for free.

Kidde brand ones are extremely garbage so this definitely tracks.

I always do initial training for newbie inspectors outside because part of the yearly inspection is to pull the pin and break the tamper seal. For someone who hasn’t done it before and is a bit timid the tamper seal can be kinda hard to break. Almost without fail the first time they do this they inadvertently squeeze the handle and get puffed.

Its good in the end though, tends to keep it from happening again inside some corporate office.

What are your recommendations for good brands? (since my entire stock of extinguishers is Kidde)

Amerex, badger, buckeye, ansul. Amerex also does a lot of “store brand” private labels but are easily identifiable as such.

Kidde and first alert are just made with the cheapest garbage parts.

Also if you own an extinguisher and you actually care about it maybe saving your life. On top of buying a decent brand you should have it professionally serviced every six years. Getting it emptied out, refilled, and replacing the stem and o-rings might cost you a few bucks, but can make a legit extinguisher last decades.

Edit: yes this means you might need to pay $50-$100 for one. Don’t cheap out on life safety equipment.

The last Kidde extinguisher I bought came without a pin, I can't say I'm surprised.

Thanks, this is very helpful. Looks like McMaster sells Buckeye and I usually trust their judgement on brands, so I'll grab some of those (pretty sure my Kidde extinguishers are all ten years old anyway :gonk: ). And yeah, where do you get one serviced?

If you’re in the US just google fire extinguisher service or maintenance and you should be able to find a mom and pop within driving range.

Its definitely a small business industry, but they are pretty much everywhere since commercial ones need to be inspected and tagged yearly.

A six year inspection on 2 extinguishers takes like 30 minutes, so you can usually drop them off and go get a coffee real quick.

Its not even the primary business at our shop and we get walk-ins at least once or twice a week.

Generally most companies that do fire systems will do that. And lots of other random companies like Cintas. If you work in an office building you can ask the maintenance department who they use for inspections and so forth. That company will likely be able to do it. If you don't work in an office building or you work in one that feels fire codes are optional things, then check with your local fire department. Some will do it, but if they don't do it then they will often know who does.

Well I don’t know that I’d go that far, but people who work at the Walmart have earned the privilege to choose the satisfaction of using an extinguisher or watching that fucker burn.

I won’t judge them for either choice.

Replace you detectors with dual sensor (optical/ionization) types.

These are more sensitive to real fires and they’re resistant to nuisance trips for minor toast incidents.

It seems contradictory, but the presence of the other sensor acts as a check, so they don’t have to trip so early on the off-chance that this is real bad fire with a worst-case scenario for detection.

I work for a major power company with important equipment that if it fails and catches fire can lead to blackouts. We are still taught to use only one fire extinguisher. If the fire is not extinguished with the use of ONE extinguisher, we are to vacate the area and call the fire department - not attempt to use another extinguisher.

Tips on using a fire extinguisher, remember this acronym; PASS

Pull - the pin
Aim - at the base of the fire
Squeeze - the trigger
Sweep - side to side at the base

Told - you this was fun
Oh - man this thing is pretty heavy

There - now it's gone out
Hold - the trigger down some more to make sure it doesn't re-ignite
Epic! - That ruled

Look - everyone else evacuated
Extinguisher - not empty yet
Fire - up another stack of paper
Try - this, my man

though one question, some of you post about powder discharge levels, I think I read a manual or something else that pretty much said that once you use it you should just empty the whole thing.
