Early hip-hop was grassroots and channelled the anger of black inner city youth into music. It was very anti-establishment and much of the early stuff was about solidarity and fighting against the power. It channelled a lot of anger and inter-gang violence into musical expression through rap battles and b-boy dance-offs, and gave black people in inner cities a powerful voice.

But in the early 90s the whole anti-establishment ethos of solidarity and "smoke weed be chill with your brothers" mentality was replaced with the gangsta mantra of black-on-black violence, misogyny and the glorification of top-quality CIA-supplied drugs.

I'm not saying all popular music is an op, but given their track history and the cultural importance of music, the CIA absolutely had their fingers in that pie.

when you have enough wealth and institutional power it's amazing what you can do just by being a tastemaker and favoring the production of x type of product over y.

you give people money to make art they love making, you make minimal, probably in-the-moment reasonable (or at least not immediately objectionable) requests about content,

that can culturally devastate.

i dunno, i think people grossly over-estimate their independence, intellectually. In a world where you are always reacting to popular culture, whoever sets that cultural agenda more or less controls the minds of the nation.

Are there any good (trustworthy) materials covering The Finders and their possible CIA connections? I started reading "The Gamecaller" by Tobe Terrell but so far it reads more like a love letter to the movement than a critical analysis or tell-all (considering he was a part of it and apparently has had allegations made against him too I'm not super surprised). The whole thing feels very under-reported. The members who are still alive and not in prison for sex crimes are obviously not talking, at least not publically. Dave McGowen wrote an article, "Finders Keepers", but it's not on the same level as other topics he's covered (like those seen in Programmed to Kill). I've reached out to a few journos who covered The Finders in the past and they've got nothing. A MuckRock search for FOIA requests hasn't turned up anything worthwhile but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.
