i heard a bunch of side activities were cut out of 3 because they thought westerners wouldn’t undetstand them. no idea if that was the case or not but i’d certainly rather have those intact if so than questionable treatment of trans characters in earlier games.

on that note those are the most recently originally published works i’ve seen start with the “this work of fiction was made in an earlier time, not that certain views expressed should’ve been acceptable then etc” type disclaimer

Jeez, getting Sacred Tree Armor as a Completion Reward for finishing Akiyama's training is both really cool but also instills a major "but what if it's better for another character" voice in the back of my head. Like, is it safe to just take it now or would it make more sense to just leave it for someone else later? :ohdear:

At the end before the finale you can swap items freely, and the most important piece of advice in Y4 is this:

Get all three pieces of the sacred tree armor, and then put them on Tanimura.

History Comes Inside!
Nov 20, 2004

It can never be overstated how important that advice is.

It should be a tooltip on every loading screen in the game.

It should be on the title screen in big bold letters.

It should be plastered across the entire screen with obnoxious flashing lights and loud sirens drowning out all other sound if you go anywhere near the finale without it, the only way to make it stop is to equip the Sacred Tree armour on Tanimura.

Ah yes, Hostess Maker. You can easily miss it the first time as the window of time to use it is only fifteen seconds.

Is there anymore to it beyond Akiyama walking in a circle hundreds of times?

Yakuza 5 had weak pacing and a scattered story, but the gameplay was miles better.

Tbh I was unaware that the cuts extended to mahjong/shogi, I thought it was just the hostess maker and quiz show. I can’t get into mahjong but I at least respect it as something thats good and shouldn’t be cut like an old anime dub calling rice balls donuts for us gaijin.

The only thing I didn't like about Kiryu's taxi missions was how surprisingly few of them actually involved driving the drat taxi!! Like half of them were just conversations (which were entertaining in their own right, but definitely not what I signed up for)

I recently set up my PS3 in my "office" (the corner of my apartment that I work from) to play some old exclusives on downtime and inevitably picked up Kenzan as I'm trying to playing through the whole RGG series now.

I played the first few chapters about 10 or so years ago so I didn't really remember much but within the first few minutes I was reminded why it's never been localized or had a remaster. I get that they were trying to depict a historical analogue to a red light district like Kamuro but they really didn't have to go that far with the... historical accuracy :stonk:

I think that would probably be a preferable alternative for most international audiences.

Being a period piece there is a historical context for much of what is depicted and the game whitewashes it somewhat, but the fact remains it starts with a scene of young girls crying as they are sold into slavery and Kiryu Musashi getting annoyed because their crying is interrupting his nap. (No he doesn't step in, and even lets the Haruka insert sell herself into slavery)

It's extremely problematic to say the very least.

I'm up to Y4 Kiryu chapter, will there be an opportunity to switch freely between the characters before the end game? I've left quite a few unfinished sidestories thinking I can come back to them later.

Also, the plot hook about the shootout in '85 is probably the single dumbest thing I have seen in a Yakuza game so far: How in the hell does it make sense to frame Saejima for the murder with rubber bullets, when he was going to kill all those dudes anyway? Katsuragi just put in on himself for literally no reason. It would make a lot of sense, if he was the one to set it up, to wear a protective vest and be the sole survivor that way. I get that from the story writing perspective this is so that the main character can remain a pure good boy, but it's completely insane and actually kinda makes Saejima a much more boring character.

On the other hand, there's been a refreshing lack of doppelgangers and long lost twin siblings so far.

Love this stupid game series.

the plan still had a lot of ridiculous uncertainties, but with rubber bullets the ways it could go wrong wouldn't get him killed. he was not willing to risk his life.

but really, he should have just worn the sacred tree set.

Just a funny random memory that popped up while thinking about this game:

My ex and I got really into Yakuza 0. It was the first one we played. She had bad carpal tunnel so couldn't really play twitchy games, so she just watched me play through most of it. At one point, she observed, "I love everything they do with this franchise, but the women are treated so badly. Every single women you've met is either a victim or a reward."

"No," I say. "Not this one."

I approach a female NPC for a sidestory. When she starts talking, it turns out her character is only given the name, Victim.

Since I'm talking about Yakuza 0, I want to complain about the thing I hated more than anything in that game. I know Yakuza all across has a kind of cognitive dissonance between its extreme violence and adorable wholesomeness, but... the fact that Yakuza 0 was able to hold my attention that long, to keep me invested and emotionally attached to the characters while not actually having anyone die was a feat. Then Hiroki Awano murders a woman as like a fuckin power move to show Kiryu what a bad guy he is. It just unbalanced everything and completely altered the value of life in the game, which should have been a really impactful and important thing, but it was wasted on a scene that didn't need it, to a character who I don't think even had a name.

Man, they sure didn’t think these Free Passes through very well in Judgement. You get one for basically mastering baseball, which ymmv but at least in the games after the 3x3 grid is introduced is genuinely fun/fair, two for card gambling, one for old school Japanese gambling, one you buy with SP…

and then the last one is the reward for mastering drone racing, which really seems like such a significant ask wrt ingame resources like SP for items and money that they should just cut out the middleman and have one infinite pass for doing that. I honestly feel really stupid for not just spending the SP I spent on drone parts on myself but at this point it’s sunk cost fallacy to get my money back with VR games…and then grind enough to make my SP back with those hug bomb omegas.

God I need help.

FWIW I got all the free passes in Lost Judgment without touching drone racing. There’s definitely a way. I don’t remember specifically how I acquired all of them. I know you can get one or two as prizes at gambling. One might be a siequest award iirc.

I think Yakuza 7 was a step in the right direction - you have 2 women in your party (though Eri is kinda a non-character, but otoh Saeko owns), there's a badass Korean mafia boss that is no one's love interest or a dating minigame objective, and there's an entire plot thread where you defend sex workers from dipshit rightwing activists (what with ichiban being a soapland child himself). Most wholesome Yakuza imo

On a related note, I'm up to Y4 finale, and of course they killed off the one major woman character. If I had a dollar every time someone in this game throws themselves at a bullet to save one of the main boys, I'd have at least 5 dollars.

Yeah the free pass requirements for Judgment are basically one of those things where by the time you'd get it you've beaten 98% of the game and its basically worthless. I guess it'd be good for infinite money on NG+, but if you've beaten the drone racing already there's really nothing to spend money on, so.....:effort:

According to series' morality that woman had to die to atone for the serial murders all over town because she didn't think she'd get the 100 billion yen loan so she was hedging her bets by doing murders for the yakuza boss who was blackmailing her. What's that, you forgot about the vague references to a serial killer from the beginning of the game because that doesn't really make sense or matter? Well, that's Y4 baby :c00lbert:
