Was also the first time I'd heard his voice and his smug contrarian tweets are a lot funnier when you know it's coming from a stereotypical squeaky voiced nerd.

I don't listen to every Chapo, but I do listen to every Jerry Falwell Chapo. Oh man last episode was so good. Had no idea how much Jerry Falwell Sr getting hosed up on sizzurp and Jebbidiah Falwell selling bear wrestling tickets is so purely American and good.

What are the specifics of this $100M deal Spotify has with Rogan? Like who made that call to sign it, who made the calculations that it would bring in +$100M in revenue?

Because to me, it reads like an artist protest against a weird phenomenon I see in the corporate world. Where a company, after putting the squeeze on their actual sources of value, whether it be their employees, or customers, or recording artists, find themselves with record profits. Even after paying out dividends, after paying bonuses to executives, after stock buybacks, they have more money on the books than they know what to do with. Well they can't give raises to their employees, or improve the products for their customers, the ratchet can only be allowed to turn in one direction. Instead, the company blows the money on stupid poo poo, like corporate retreats where they do trust falls and slice their hands doing tug of wars or burn their soles firewalking. Or if an exec brings in motivational speakers Tony Robbins or Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama to spout nonsense at a mandatory corporate seminar. Or they could bring in members of the hit Broadway musical "Hamilton" to sing songs on videocalls.

Some idiot exec thinking along those lines must have made the call to funnel $100M to this absolute loving moron. It could have been worse, they could have signed the deal with Tim Pool or Ben Shapino.

Yeah you’re trying to overthink it but it’s not complicated. Joe Rogan, for better or for worse, is the most famous broadcaster on Earth, and more people listened to his privately produced podcast than any other professionally produced program anywhere else. Spotify wants to be a tech giant like Apple or Google, so they made a power move to announce themselves.

Yeah, I'm sympathetic to his plight but I know the story. All I can do is keep getting pissed off every time I hear it. I want my podcasts to change up the things that make me pissed off

I don’t agree with Felix’s slippery slope argument in regards to Joe Rogan. If you are using your platform to amplify vaccine ignorance during a pandemic you can’t be surprised that people don’t want to do business with your platform anymore. The “rappers kill people so we need to take their music off the platform” argument is loving stupid.

It's very on brand that Matt doesn't know how Spotify works. You can listen to Joe Rogan for free on there but it's just going to loaded with commercials. Rogan also has a big Youtube channel too.

Felix being sympathetic to Rogan seems on brand since Felix loves MMA and is most likely numb to the idiocy of MMA people.

Nah Matt's right that the move to Spotify shrunk Rogan's audience. He can't post the full episodes to YouTube they're all clips.

You would think that would be explicitly illegal, but it’s probably the same ‘nowhere in the rules does it say that a dog can’t play basketball’ thing as a lot of other stuff we’ve been finding out is not actually written law.
