Don't tease the Octopus, kids!
I was following a guide to get 100% on X-2 in one go. Things were not lining up perfectly, so I assume I had already failed. Then the guide just casually said to go beat the optional superdungeon when it opened up. I managed to slog my way down all 100 floors or whatever, where the final boss could just casually 1-shot my characters no matter what I did or how many times I tried. I was like level 40 or something. I gave up then and there and never beat the game. The end, no moral.

Yeah I didn't really get it. I thought that the poison must have some miasmatic properties, but then how did the king in the depths of the castle makes it out fine, while Cyan was okay?

Been really craving to play FF6 again. Gonna hold off till the PR comes out. Last time I played it was on the PS1 IIRC. Came in like a double disk with FF5 or 4.

Off topic question: How is Dragon Quest XI? I love turn based RPGs and people seem to think highly of this one.

It's really good. I dunno how much you're familiar with Dragon Quest but generally the gameplay systems are on the simpler side and the story doesn't have a lot of twists, turns, or intrigue, but it's generally a very charming and fun game. It has intentionally old-school turn-based combat so if that appeals to you, you'll have a good time.

DQ11 was my favorite game of that year. It's excellent.

Quick tip: as soon as you get access to the settings menu, change the overworld music to the Dragon Quest VIII one. That feature was added in the definitive edition and it's maybe the biggest single improvement in that version. The DQXI overworld music is really repetitive and tonally very wrong for big parts of the game, but the DQVIII overworld theme is beautiful.

That they actually added an option specifically to change the overworld music, specifically to the one from Dragon Quest VIII, strongly suggests they got a lot of feedback about how much worse XI's overworld theme is.

Shootie HG also did the song "Limit Break!" for XIII-2 and it also kicks appropriate amount of rear end, but more importantly he came back for the FF7R DLC to create something that easily lives up to Crazy Chocobo's legacy:

Dragon Quest XI is solid for the first two acts, but the postgame soured me and I dropped it. The music sucked,

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a Dragon Quest homage that ends up better than the inspiration. You have turn-based battles, excellent music, summons, a job-system, an elderly man in a diaper, side-quests, a complex economy, a strong story, and go-karting.

There's this one weird bit where a sleazeball pimp suddenly becomes a saint after dying, but that's about it.

I love Y7, it's mechanics are not better than basically any modern DQ game. and by modern I mean like...since the PS1.

The game suffers from being too easy on normal. It's not until chapter 12 of 15 does it perk up, and the game strongly hints you should try out that new battle-arena.

SettingSun

I never had to grind in Yak7. While its battle system is heavily inspired by DQ it is a very simple version of it. The game is easy. That's not a bad thing. I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone not familiar with Yakuza though.

There's a lot of small, insane bullshit that it makes you do for 1 run 100% but my "favorite" is that you have to rest in the cabin at least once in every chapter.

The one time I tried, guess what I forgot to do in chapter 4. :shepicide:

For context the game starts with a realistic depiction of child abuse. Then it cuts to the main character chasing down a scammer because he tried passing footage of mating animals as real porn to some gullible teens.

Like a Dragon was the most fun game I played in 2020. I had an absolute blast. My only complaint about it is that the cutscenes are the longest I've ever seen in a video game with the exception of maybe the Metal Gear series. I have a lot of patience for long cutscenes but LAD really put me to the test. They could have easily edited most of them down to half the time or less and still gotten the main points across.

If you like DQ games you'll probably liked LAD because it's a lovingly crafted homage to the DQ series but set in the Yakuza universe with all the goofy humor and shenanigans you'd expect.

If X-2 were made today then 100% completion would be unmissable, and there'd be a proper quest-log.

The character of Brother would be redeemed by shoving him through a jet-turbine.

Harrow

Yakuza 7 is one of those games where I feel like some people leap from "this feature is not the best it could be" to "this feature is irredeemable garbage," specifically about its combat. The combat is fine. It has lots of ways I'd like to see it improved and it's not a selling point but it's also good enough that it never got in the way of my enjoyment (and I did some optional fights just because I liked the game overall).

Then again I also feel that way about The Witcher 3's combat--it's okay at worst--and I think the majority opinion around here is that TW3's combat is an atrocity that someone should have gone to jail over so maybe I have bad taste.

Motto posted:

It has one of those points really, and it also introduces you to a battle arena sidequest right before the level spike. Doing that side quest is enough to level and gear you up for basically the rest of the game. Still not ideal, though.

There's also a grinding dungeon available in the final chapter but it's not really necessary to do it, it's just there if you want it. It's full of the game's equivalent of metal slimes so one run through will probably have you overleveled for the final dungeon.

Mechanically the game does have issues, though. That one level spike is weird and also the job system is unfortunately very shallow. It's still pretty fun and the story and characters are good as hell, though.

Also outside of like their final 2 abilities, most classes are basically choosing between which animation you want your damage to be. There was basically never a reason to use any buff or defensive strat outside of like 3 bosses before the 90% mark, which is not the norm in DQ. You gotta engage with the whole system in DQ or else you'll get squashed pretty early on.

Yeah, to be clear, that's why I hate him in FFX-2, too. I just liked him in FFX, mostly because he didn't really have much of a character, but he was great at Blitzball.

But then they made him a weirdo in FFX-2 and now I can't un-remember that when I see him or use him in FFX.
