i had very low expectations for reckoning war and it failed to meet them. slott really thought that "space orcs with generic sci fi guns that i swear are really special in non-specific ways" would be a big deal?

also I’m kinda over the idea of introducing an entire alien race as being inherently “savage”

Looks like someone forgot his hardhat...
Slott really held onto "Yes, it's yet another species from the dawn of time, but this time they're orcs!" for 15 years.

Also reading the recap of what happened to Nick Fury over the last few years is loving wild. Why did he kill the Watcher again? Was that ever explained?

And that's legitimately the first time I've seen Jack of Hearts since Avengers: Disassembled. So I'm not holding out hope for him.

lol nope. I think the closest they came was that Fury did it because he was dying and he had to see what hero could he deem worthy to take his "Man on the Wall" job defending against alien threats. So instead of just asking them like a sane person he went and killed Uatu and made it a big dumb murder mystery?

I mean I always looked at it like Fury was always a spymaster obsessed with being 5 moves ahead of his enemies and so he finally decided to make his last big play gunning for Uatu so that he could literally know anything. BUUUT that's not what the text says. Just killed him because he could because gently caress it.

i liked how when johnny brought fury into the ship, someone asked how fury could possibly survive out in space without a suit. fury was wearing a spacesuit complete with helmet.

BUUUT that's not what the text says. Just killed him because he could because gently caress it.

It was more convoluted than that. So Nick Fury goes up to investigate who robbed the Watcher of a bunch of dangerous trinkets as well as one of his eyes. When the Watcher refuses to tell him the culprits he gradually loses his temper before deciding that if he just takes the Watcher's remaining he can just see for himself, since apparently the Watcher just records all of his info in his eyes instead of writing it down. At which point the Watcher is getting pretty maudlin about his lot in life and essentially goads Fury into killing him by kind of inching forward with his hands all aglow with purple stuff and letting his defenses drop.

So there was an element of necessity because Fury wanted to solve this silly mystery, an element of anger because he resented how passively the Watcher used his knowledge, and an element of Uatu functionally using Fury as a tool to commit suicide. It was a goofy story.

our every move is the new tradition
It's definitely got that Slott thing where he seems too eager to leave a giant stamp on the larger Marvel Universe, so he takes these massive swings every time that often aren't particularly well thought-out.

Just in Reckoning War, you've got the real secret history of the Watchers, a cosmic war so big that it's making Eternity sick, the explored Marvel Universe only being 10% of the total of space due to an eon-long interstellar contagion, Earth abruptly losing its moon, Mr. Fantastic mainlining Watcher juice, and legally distinct W40K orcs coming out of nowhere to kick everyone's hairstyles in.

Any one of those things would be enough for a nice big storyline, but Slott can't help himself, so now he's got six different major status quo shifts and none of them will get the time they really deserve.

How Wonderful!

I'm curious to see if the moon getting blown up will get acknowledged at all in other books since the 616 moon is actually a little bit crowded with important stuff. Like, X-Men live up there! All of Wolverine's poo poo is just floating in space, unattended katanas just drifting through the cosmos!

The Watchers' origin story/secret history isn't so much of a retcon as an expansion of their original origin going back to 1964, where it's revealed that they were a race of super-advanced beings who initially went around sharing their technology willy-nilly with the goal of pushing civilizations forward. Their gifts were given to a race of little green men (the Proscilians, as mentioned in Reckoning War) who very quickly used them to build powerful nuclear (later 'cosmic') weapons, wage war, and wipe out entire planets. At that point "many many eons ago" they made a vow not to interfere in the progress of other planets, only to Watch.

So on some really basic elevator pitch level, I get how "the Original Sin of the Watchers comes back to haunt everyone" is decent territory to mine a story out of. It's just the further layers of the story and the execution that are indecent.

Explain the Spider-Man story of how Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborne hooked up and she bore his children.

Or you can explain the Krakoan Resurrection Protocols and what each member of the resurrection team is supposed to do.

There's also the option of explaining the entirety of Jason Aaron's run on Thor using only heavy metal murals.

I wanna say Longshot/Shatterstar would be harder to explain but actually you could just hand someone a copy of All You Zombies by Robert Heinlein. Magik and Bettsy/Kwannon, Cable, Nathan Grey. Honestly every single loving X character that's been in comics since the 90s or earlier.
