I just pulled the trigger on another 40 9210+ for me and the housemate. Wanted to try out the 9211+ masks, but they're $3.5 a pop, before tax and shipping. the 9210's came out to just under $2.50 per mask after tax and shipping. Prob won't get here until end of the month. Not a worry, though.

tbh i wouldn't be surprised if the grainger 9210s never show up and they end up canceling the orders

this is going to get a little dark, but, i hope it resonates with you or some people here. the thing that is keeping me going is that americans, westerners in general, and especially capitalists, are finally careening away from "the end of history" and into their own oblivion, opening up a path for a future where humanity continues to exist. its going to suck because they are nasty, bitter, horrible people who absolutely want to take everyone with them, but at least covid leads to some possibilities where they just won't be able to. its overdue, unjust, and will do terrible things to people who don't deserve it as collateral to be mass buried in piles far from those who lived long, happy lives with families off of a mountain of exploitation and death, but what can we do? not recognizing it doesn't make it not what's happening.

there's a comic i am having trouble finding to post but it is (i think an edit) of one of those many panel full page kind of comics, where a person is offered the end of capitalism if they press a button, which they immediately slap, to where the presenter is like NO NO I DIDNT EXPLAIN BUT IF YOU PRESS IT YOUR HOME COUNTRY OF AMERICA GETS NUKED! the person just keeps hammering the button, with their assumed partner walking in, to which they excitedly proclaim "honey, we're getting nuked!"

most everyone wants to be a martyr, it's easy. solve the existential crisis of the absurdity and thus inherent lack of meaning to existence, and then not have to do anything ever about it because you're dead. get to be remembered as a hero and you don't even have to like, do things anymore? it's a tantalizing gig, but it's liberal fantasy that martyrdom gets anything done. most would-be martyrs are just dead and unremembered and the poo poo they died to change still lurches on to ever more victims without abatement.

what actually accomplishes things, what does give your life a meaning that you are able to accept, is actually doing poo poo. doing poo poo for a long time, much of it hard and all of it at least annoying and definitely an unjust burden to have to bear, and helping chip away at things being better, with so many others, most of you nameless beyond your circle of family and friends.

there is a lot of things absolutely terrifying about watching this rotten, cancerous empire's collapse start to accelerate from the core, especially for those of us who live in it. not a moment goes by that i am not acting or making plans revolving around the fact that the person i love the most in the world is at a pretty bad risk for getting murked by the out of control plague on account of her being immunocompromised and that if that happens it will most likely be because i hosed up some safety precaution or tried to do something too dangerous. but by the void the empire is collapsing. and the worst, most terrible people you can imagine, the ones that were nigh-inevitably going to be wantonly cruel and murderous during the definitely-inevitable fascist uprising as the empire dies, are dropping like flies on poisoned poo poo because they can't stop going to the applebee's suck and gently caress. sure, it's not fair that in the wake of their murderous abandon a lot of people who don't deserve it are also going to leave us too soon, but all we can do is all we can do to keep ourselves and those we love and care for safe to try and get through this, and maybe get to be part of humanity embarking on an actual future.

A glass can of beans in toast to finding silver linings, even if they're just the silver lining of bunker bean cans.
Honestly it's necessary though. Humans have been through atrocious poo poo already that can really only be survived by some strong sense of purpose, irrational or not.

Yeah, I have quite a few different ones simply because of comfort in different situations.

The Honeywell 7700 is definitely comfortable when I wasn’t speaking but I absolutely hated how fiddly all the straps were and how it fit. The straps are absolutely F tier to me. I was constantly adjusting to make a good seal especially when talking. Maybe if it had much better straps I’d like it more. It also always felt dusty and dirty no matter what I did. Things just cling to the material. If I had to wear one for 8 hours without no talking, I would probably like it better but it’s an absolute no-go for taking. So I had to have a bizarre setup where I wore it any time I didn’t need to talk and then went outside to swap to an Aura when I needed to talk.

The 3M 6300 I just got feels better for mixed use. The seal on it is fantastic because of how stiff the mask is. i have not had to adjust the mask yet. It’s definitely so stiff it can make my face a little uncomfortable after a while but I think that’s a fair trade for the seal. Way easier to hear me and talking does not break the seal. It has the best bling available too if I don’t want to do a bunch of design and 3D printing.

I think I’m going to just full on doomsday fashion. I don’t give a gently caress about what anyone thinks and don’t want them approaching me at this point anyway. I got the full skull mask for the 6300, some over glasses sealing goggles, and I’m looking at hoods to go over it all. gently caress it, might as well complete the look if this is life for the next who knows how long.

Are any of you doing a qualitative fit test with your elastomerics?

I just did one and I got a faint hit of bitrex during the deep breaths portion. Seemed like it might be an exhale valve issue, as the vaporizer was aimed right at the exhale valve. I was using a 3M 7503 which reliably passes seal checks.

I tried a 9210+ and easily passed the test. Then I repeated the deep breaths portion in the 7503 and had no problem. Now I’m rethinking what my goto mask should be. Maybe I’ll switch to the 9210+.

I’ll probably run the test a few more times and see what confidence level I can get.

What’s interesting is that fit testing is intended to be done semiannually to assess, well, fit. Flaws in respirators could slip by unnoticed for months. Actually, it’s worse than that, because occupational fit testing is often done with a respirator set aside just for that purpose, not the worker’s own.

I saw that you purchased a source-control respirator, and that’s one way to end valve leak concerns.

I think that this highlights the importance of cleaning the critical sealing faces of the exhalation valve regularly and especially any time they are perceived to be “sticky”. This is something that I have always done, but I never had basis for it besides common sense.

DIY fit testing is beyond what most people are willing to do, but if you read this thread and have the ability, it’s not a bad idea to do it regularly even if you believe that your respirator fits you like a glove.

I’ve posted about it twice since i read someone mentioning this and checked.
here in Loveland CO. between two pretty liberal cities, the homedepot has ~15 boxes of auras on the shelf while listing them as out of stock on the websites

I suggest you make a drive or have someone drive you out to one of these places, as you’re bound to live within 50 miles of one, and check.

Yeah maybe.

I have the opposite anecdote of a store listing more than one hundred boxes of Auras and having precisely zero.

My recommendation is that if you do see stock online, and you’re not desperate to get them at any cost, place an order for curbside pickup. If the stock count is in error, the order will simply be cancelled when an employee goes to fill the order and finds the shelf empty.
