IT BURNS posted:This is more or less what's happening in the Valley now. The ISDs are shedding students by the hundreds for IDEA and other charter schools while closing/consolidating elementary and middle schools,. They vocally pin their decisions on "people didn't gently caress enough 14-18 years ago" but recent statements from IDEA and school board members indicate otherwise.

Marxalot posted:Starting to think this is an lolaustin event. HEB here was entirely stocked and basically empty of people. There's freezing rain and very gusty winds forecast for the hill country and from New Braunfels north along I-35. Significant accumulations are expected from Austin up. I doubt we'll have any grid-level problems but freezing rain plus wind is a recipe for local power outages, especially if you've got a lot of trees with dead branches in them like we do after last year's freeze. Charging up the power banks is a very good idea.

zoux posted:Every state in the union does accountability testing and I think it was a requirement of NCLB. Texas started accountability exams in '79. I guess I must've taken some in school, though I don't remember them nor do I remember them being a major issue. Maybe the stakes are higher? The ones that most of us took in school were benchmark (diagnostic) exams, intended to give your teachers some kind of data about your ability that they could then parse and do whatever with. The old TAKS and now the STAAR tests will actually stop you from being able to graduate if you don't pass them. There are workarounds like IGC projects, but its a big pain in the rear end for everyone involved. Now, the thing is, these are minimum-skills tests. To pass the English exams, you realistically need to be on something like a 7th or 8th grade skill level. This isn't really a problem for most native speakers, especially given the insane emphasis on these tests in the public schools, as well as the number of times you end up taking them if you don't pass. Kids with IEP's (special education) can often take "modified" forms of the test that function essentially as waivers for the requirements. The only group that really gets hosed up by these tests are non-native speakers that either have not had the time or simply have not picked up more than very basic English reading and writing skills. There isn't a huge amount of political will to get rid of this poo poo because the people most impacted are politically very weak.

Houston is still well above freezing, luckily, not supposed to drop below until tonight. And it shouldn't be at risk of burst pipes this year provided you drip, unless you have some really long, weird, exposed outdoor runs.
