I couldn't work out it was trying to depict going up a hill the first few times because I was too busy suppressing a strong wave of nausea from the sudden framerate lurch.

The fuck, Graham?!

Navigating the hills in that game is a fool's errand

Mole Mania finished! Ya didnt have to go so drat hard in some of those puzzles, MM. I agree that it's a lost gem. It's interesting, well-animated, and has that touch of personality that Nintendo brings to its games. I like the music, and I like the cute cutscenes. I feel bad for the devs because they made something fun and unique that sold like poo poo because of timing, and now it's largely forgotten. Such is life.

The pinball game was fun too. I used to play DOS pinball games alot when I was young and not really since, so this was a fun nostalgia trip. I think I topped out at 125k.

Great crop for this round!

I never knew the GBC had an updated chipset. Kinda makes sense when you see how much better the games got but I didn’t notice it as a kid.

I never knew, either until a few years ago. I was off on PS1 or N64.

if you want to compare like for like - Links Awakening has slowdown in more than a few areas,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXWqFO75IZY&t=2788s

but GBC oracle of seasons has the oomph to support scrolling - more like Link to the Past than NES Zelda 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_an9A4JO--A&t=5241s

I guess you can also compare Super Mario Land 2 to Wario Land 3

here's another game on Shantae's 'engine', lots of animation, scrolling, parallax in the background.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C_dotZExqo

Street Fighter Alpha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1nAsPjMKzI compared to Street Fighter 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwkQu_qSjg4
really only a few notches behind what you'd see on more powerful hardware like the Neo Geo Pocket Color

and of course, some demoscene fun

Let's talk about composer Alberto Jose Gonzalez, the Tim Follin of the Game Boy - right down to making incredible music for really poo poo games (Gonzalez himself credits Follin as an inspiration).

He got his start making music for the MSX and ZX Spectrum and you can definitely hear those euro game music influences.

Here's the Mountains from The Smurfs. Listen to those chunky reggae arpeggios. The NES version is better but this is still pretty drat good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x35H3mcTDfM

He seems to have particularly had an affinity for kickass Mountain tracks, as this is Mountain from the game Spirou, a game I have never heard of that wikipedia informs me is based on a comic I have never heard of. I'm Australian, it's not my fault.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRZ-J6krc_w

He also got some great stuff out of the Game Boy Color which is generally regarded as having a bit of a tinnier/crappier sound than the original Game Boy. This is Scroll Stage from Turok 2 for the GBC.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st4aSeFzEBA

And the kickass BGM 2 from Turok Rage Wars, again for the Game Boy Color.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x1ybf2SMzc

There's one final track I want to highlight though, which is from Metal Masters which I haven't played but it looks like absolute dogshit. If you only listen to one of these, make it this one.
I think hands down this is the most impressive piece of music in a released in an original Game Boy game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5NZXMEtUoY

tl;dr Alberto Jose Gonzalez absolutely owns.

One Nation, Under God.
The most advanced GB music I can think of comes from a late-era GBC game called Doki x Doki Sasete!! - it was the sole GB game composed by Manabu Namiki, who's mostly known for his work on a ton of beloved arcade shmup soundtracks (most of which were made for relatively modest hardware), and it's a really interesting blend of his own techniques with a lot of very EU-sounding stuff that Japanese composers typically never attempted while the system was alive:

playlist

It would have been nice to see all that technique applied to a better game, but that's true of almost every good GB soundtrack.

I always associate that trilly buzz* on the second channel with british/european C64 SID chip music -and they took their c64 skills to the GB.

same, they're cool little games with some fun OCs and you can play as zero in the second one, making it better than some of the console games by default

XT1 is really bizzare, like, only having four levels (and then 3 sigma levels) and having to do the game on hard to get the other four (and then still the same sigma levels but now Geemer is there instead of the other guy) and in hard mode the story specific characters just, aren't there at all and are never mentioned. And you can use Zero..by opening the menu and using Z1-4 items and hoping the boss didn't move out of range in the frames of you opening the menu.

I'm gonna play XT2 later but yeah I remember liking it and it's one of the few videogames (especially back then) that has someone with my name in it, so that's rad.

I’ll just quote from last page because someone else asked the same thing.

njsykora posted:

A lot of the top down stuff tends to be good, Colin McRae Rally got a good port, and Star Wars Episode 1 Racer was a very similar design and worked for the same reasons. The issues with many racers on the GB/C is turn anticipation (the Micro Machines problem), those 2 I mentioned used turn indicators to help with that because the draw distance in many games just isn’t enough to do the long runs of signs leading into a turn that main console stuff could do. Wave Race was one of those games that tends to be forgotten behind the rest of that series. Some of the Lego Racers games as well were good, especially the one that was basically a slot car game (Stunt Driver I think). Behind the car stuff didn’t really get consistently good until the GBA really, Colin McRae Rally 2.0 especially got an extremely good GBA port.

I actually rate RC Pro-Am GB and forgot it in this post, slower stuff works well with the size screen we’re dealing with on the Game Boys.

I love Revenge of the Gator. I think Pokémon Pinball is probably the best pinball game on the GB/GBC if you're interested in replayability and variety, but Gator just feels so good to play.

My cart is unfortunately in storage at the moment, but managed to get this score on the Everdrive yesterday:

Thanks! I’ll definitely check Colin McRae out (are those actual polygons for the cars??)

I remember V-Rally 3 being pretty mind blowing on the GBA, what with its in-car camera angle and full 3D tracks.
