Why is it so hard to get Sammy Watkins size and clean breaks and 4.3 speed and incredible blocking ability and the ability to make contested catches and then have him fall to 30

Actually, one dude I really want to add to the list but feel compelled to call out on his own--David Bell. He's going to rise before the draft off of production and tape. When you watch his tape, he reminds me a lot of Tee Higgins--smooth route guy who just kind of pops open and pushes guys around in intermediate route trees where he can create opportunities to be aggressive with body positioning and frame. He's not a giant Keenan Allen type contested catch guy for the deep ball, more of like an ideal WR2 for most offenses. If you watch Brohm's passing game, it's very similar to what you see out of Lane/Day systems where WRs have optionality within the same play--find a spot/read the defense and make the same read as the QB. Part of the reason why Purdue runs so hot cold is that it's something you can complicate if the QB isn't on the same page as the receivers--making QB carousel shenanigans even more harmful and putting receivers in bad situations at times. Bell, like Rondale Moore, was right in his reads most of the time and had production as a result, but people correctly realized that you could make his life hard by making confusing reads that the QB would throw a less than perfect ball towards. That said, it's very hard to be an elite route guy when you have to do that reading. I think he gets overrated and isn't quite perfect, particularly when he has to break back or in at times and can leave a tell at times by trying to look for a Robber or Cloud defender at the last second when he should already know what's there. That said, that's something a good WR/OC can fix. If that optionality and read ability translates, he's going to be able to play immediately, because he's going to have a much easier time understanding how he fits into a passing skeleton in the NFL and gets more consistent reads out of a QB as a result, even though I don't think he's a true WR1 in the NFL. All that said? He's not going to be burner dude in the NFL at all. Guy is probably a 4.5-4.6 guy who gets his separation from double moves and body control (and occasional OPI which is cool and good). His ability to get deep is going to be contingent on having another guy the defense is scared of deep, drawing safety attention and making a corner have to play him with bad leverage where his ability to go after a ball can make it a 70/30 ball, especially since he's got very good ball and eye skills to not give away his plans on a ball. It's sort of the inverse of Justyn Ross--spectacular catch guy but aimed at the 7-15 yard catch instead of the 15-30 yarder. He'll get RAC in the NFL over the middle, just like we see with Tee, but what's going to be hilarious is that he's going to get chased down by some faster linebackers at points. Biggest concerns with him are that lack of true vertical speed and the general livability of being an intermediate circus catch receiver--your ribs need to be made of adamantium. He always gets up even when Kyle Hamilton, Rocket Hickman, or any number of LB/S guys from Iowa get a good lick on him, which is often for how much passing and usage he got. Super high floor, not a crazy ceiling. If I had a legit WR1, I'd go grab him. Could be a Hakeem Nicks type, could end up Higgins. Whenever his body loses a step, he's going to be out of the league quick.

BlindSite posted:Malik Willis seems like this year's trey lance in terms of fast rising status. There's been a number of fluff pieces from a lot of mouth piece writers for teams, including the Panthers and Lions today. I'm thinking while he's less pro ready than Pickett teams are falling in love with his feet and his upside. I'm starting to think he won't get out of the top 10. He's been looking real good at the senior bowl while a lot of the other guys have been struggling, which I think is part of it. He should further separate himself at the combine as well. Pretty hilarious if a Liberty QB goes first out of all QBs. It speaks to the lack of options this year, but also he is legitimately intriguing. kiimo posted:I have realized the last five drafts or so that I am widely obsessed with wide receivers. That position for me is running backs. I loving love watching running backs, examining the differences in their pros and cons and each individual running style. It's one of those positions, even more than wide receivers in my personal opinion, where there is just so much variance in how it can be played and the different attributes and abilities guys can bring to the position.

Yeah but it's not as fun because you can find effective RBs as low as UDFA. The days of them being highly valued commodities are over I think. I curse the day the Chiefs drafted CEH over Tee Higgins.

Which I guess is an open question but only due to injury, I still think he's gonna be awesome

I'm sure some people said that, but what I had thought was not that he had terrible hands but that he simply hadn't been used that way very much in college and was preferred as a pure runner there. There were also injury/workload concerns which caused him to drop a bit. Honestly scary to think what he could've accomplish playing for the Chiefs though, lol

CEH was super overrated from being on an all world offense that forced already thin college teams to put at most two in the box against him. Chiefs were about the best place for him to land and he still sucks. NFL teams should only listen to me about RBs.

Nissin Cup Nudist posted:People ding Matt Corral for a simple offense and Willis played in an even simpler offense. Dude is going to have to sit or survive one hell of a trial by fire Not wrong, one thing to note though is that Willis has been held back by his mechanics for so long that if he miraculously cleaned that up, you might not need more than 2 reads then scramble to get him to produce. You pair him with an OC who can do the McVay thing where he calls in the entire read/progression to Goff, and I could see him succeeding for a bit, albeit this all hinges on his terrible release and a very specific type of offense which is essentially like a 10% chance it all aligns. Corral does have better mechanics and a good physical profile. The question he’s going to have to answer is how much of a gunslinger he still is. Dude loves the big vertical balls over the middle, but you have to thread a needle every time with those in the nfl. I think he’s smarter than the average veer and shoot/briles/freeze tree guys, but every throw in the nfl is essentially going to be like the hardest 20% of throws he did in college. I still think corral is the better prospect, but if they both his every developmental mark and improvement, Willis will end up a better player off of ceiling alone.
