Then she sat on the desk to "get a better look" and I chastised her for being careless when her skirt hiked up. Man, why couldn't someone just show some interest in me

You think their boomer/gen x parents are going to even bother trying to give them any guidance or advice on relationships, even if they had anything useful to offer in a way that the kids want to listen to?

I'm not sure you can blame romcoms or Hollywood movies in general for inceldom. I think it's a natural, semi-logical consequence of self-loathing and frustration. Most people want to not be at fault for their failings so they create reasons for women not liking them. They'll blame society and women in general for being the way they are and judging them on a few millimeters of bone creating this hyperbolic hierarchy that punished them for reasons that are beyond their control. Of course they never talk about how they never shower or brush their teeth or make women uncomfortable by being weird in general. I think what's funny is that there is an actual loose sexual/attractiveness hierarchy but these goofs always try to play to the top of it and then take their failure to double down on their terrible ideas. I think romcoms and movies in general can normalize abuse and weird relationship dynamics but I don't think it has many connections with incel thought.

It’s maybe a more general trend in media that presents romance as part of a character’s reward for doing things right or saving the day, or just accomplishing an unrelated goal like saving the local community center from an evil developer. There’s also a pernicious strand of kids’ story that presents heterosexual romance as weirdly adversarial, or like an exercise in satisfying formal requirements or knowing the right thing to say or do when prompted, which would make women seem scary and outside normal experience to heterosexual boys. I agree that profound alienation and normal mental illness left to stew and intensify through the bad kind of online community is what makes an incel. There’s a reason they always have reactionary politics and want to kill people in spectacular ways in addition to being loser weirdos.

Movies and tv shows tend to have unrealistic and dumb romance because the writers historically have been a bunch of dudes who are total dweebs. So it became this weird thing where dweebs were writing this dumb dweeb poo poo, which was often just power fantasy or wish fulfilment for themselves. Then real life dweebs watch TV or movies instead of gaining their own world experience. There's plenty of writers out there that I enjoy, but I can't think of one that I wouldn't classify at as at least a little fuckin weird.

Ghost Leviathan posted:A lot about incels makes sense when you realise they uncritically absorbed what pop culture was telling them about women and relationships. Talking about Pop culture, IMO, Romcoms are like Disney movies for adults because of the continuation of weird relationship themes (red flags, every time). There has been quite a bit of academic sociocultural and feminist criticism aimed at classic Disney movies for transmitting and maintaining the influence of multiple damaging social and gender role expectations into kids who got hooked on them (or had parents hooked on them and forced the kids to watch). If you've ever met adult Disney super fans, some of this stuff is readily apparent in their actions or thought processes. "You have no good qualities, but you deserve a Prince Charming because you're princess and you exist?" "Women need to be saved because they are all helpless?" Etc. Male and female characters conformed to stereotypical physical forms/shapes, social and gender roles, and expected actions that followed what was normal for the time period. There's definitely a body of criticism aimed at Disney movies, mostly the classics, but also many of the new ones, too. For example, here's a listicle that points out some of the messaging about Disney princesses, which I will summarize with the topic titles: https://screenrant.com/disney-princesses-aged-poorly-cinderella-ariel-belle/ quote:Some Of The Storylines Suggest A Woman Should Change Herself To Get A Man To Love Her You can imagine that a girl or boy who watched Disney movies multiple times week for the first 6+ years of their life is going to get some weird ideas about themselves and their role in the world. And you know who LOVES the messaging of Disney movies and can't shut the gently caress up about how he thinks they perfectly reflect human society? loving Jorp!

I wouldn't really take anything on the site at face value or as a litmus for how people actually feel or act because 90% of posts are just trying to hit a moving target to get as much karma as possible. Also, if you look at the "instant karma" subs a lot of the most updooted posts are women getting punched in the face by some giant ripped dude and redditors being like "THIS IS EQUAL TREATMENT RIGHT HERE". Point being, anything painting women in a bad light, broadly, will gain upvotes. Stay off of reddit.

This feels like the most relevant thread to ask this question in but where did so many guys get the idea that wiping your rear end will turn you gay?
