So in California, a landlord has to notify you 30 days in advance if they raise the price on your lease. But the tenant has to give 60 days notice if they are not continuing the lease. How is someone supposed to know if they want to buy something if they don't know what the price is?

I don't know about CA but in my experience, if you have a 1 year lease, they cannot raise it mid year on you, and if it's month to month, you only need to give one month notice.

Flash Gordon Ramsay posted:Normally those just go through one of the knockouts on the sink, so you should just be able to buy a new sink mounted pump at the hardwares store and be done with it. Note that you'll probably need a basin wrench if you want to change out the soap pump/reservoir. It can be very hard to get a regular wrench in, depending on how your sink is shaped. That said, with the proper tool this is not a difficult job. The worst part of it is having to stick your head into the under-sink cabinet, which is always kind of awkward.

I thought it would be easier just to get a new top instead of installing the whole thing. It doesn't even screw into it, it just sits on top, but I'm having trouble finding something as a standalone.

If you can find the old part for sale, you could buy it and scavenge it for spare parts.

I might start hanging out in a casino because two people I know keep asking me to take them, but I don't want to look stupid. Any advice, I've never played a casino game. I heard roulette, blackjack, and the slots are good. Oh and I am setting a goal to bring $160 and not lose any more than that. I expect to lose it all, I know in the end you just lose. But it's play money.

Play craps and make simple bets, it's the best odds you can get in a casino i.e. if you play long enough you will break a tiny bit below even. And it's a social and fun game that is not competitive (everyone is rooting for the shooter). Someone taught me the simple bets to make the one time i went to a casino but I forget them now, hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about and can chime in, it was a blast and I quit when I was exactly $69 ahead but again if you play long enough you will statistically end up with like 90-something% of the money you came in with, which is the best casino odds there are considering how much more fun it is than slots

Bookbinding, Part II I've a 16th century book that needs to be bound. I was sent the list of members of the Society of Bookbinders. I emailed all of them. Almost none of them replied One said she wasn't trained in antiquarian books and wouldn't touch a 16th century title. Fair enough. Jame Reid-Cunningham, which is who I fixed on (from his proximity, if nothing else) replied to neither of my messages. Jason Patrician answered the first message, gave a fair estimate, and showed several period-appropriate examples of his work, but that was it. He dropped contact after that. Colby College told me to contact one of their professors who does all their bookbinding. but the email bounded and they'd not respond again with the correct address. I know of no other schools around here with antiquarian book collections. Has anyone any further suggestions.

What's a decent padlock that can handle being exposed to the elements 24/7? I don't need it to be some miracle unpickable lock, but I do need it to reliably open even if it's been sitting out in the damp for a year or three. Looking for a keyed lock, not a combination lock.

To maximize your entertainment value for the money, I'd go with craps, because you aren't just a spectator; you get to throw the dice, baby.

Pretty sure blackjack has the best odds, assuming perfect play. The chart is pretty easy to memorize and every casino I've been in will let you bring in a physical copy and use it while playing. You can play all night at a $5 table with $150. Here's the chart: https://www.onlinegamblingsites.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Blackjack-Basic-Strategy-Chart-1.png It looks complicated but 90% of it is the logical outcome of assuming the dealer's hole card is a 10 / face card.

Hey guys, I need to make a deposit into my bank account for a large amount of money. Do you suppose they will require my ID, or can I just use my bank card and a password? Here's the backstory if you need it: I lost my ID and it'll be 20 days before my replacement gets here. This check is basically my inheritance from my father passing. The attorney working with the estate needs that cash deposited IMMEDIATELY or there's going to be more fuckin 200-dollar-an-hour charges or something and penalties for going over the date and it'll include all kinds of more fees. I recently moved and the nearest branch of my bank is an hour drive from here. I cannot call the branch or any branch. Every single number just gets routed to customer service. I called customer service and after more than an hour wait, I was told "If you have your bank card and password, it should be okay. However, since it is so much money, they may require an ID. You'll have to ask someone at the branch. No; there is no way to contact the branch except driving your rear end up there." So at this point, nobody fuckin knows and I can't contact anyone who does, so I'm just going to ask your opinion: card + password is normally sufficient, but I've never made a deposit at this bank via check in person for more than like a hundred bux. I am loathe to drive all the loving way back to the town from which I just fled where I may just be told lol go home and wait and pay your attorney more money.

So, okay, more backstory: the reason why we're doing it this way is because it was supposed to be faster. Normally there would have to be an estate account open and a bunch of other things and that would require me interacting with both my father's bank AND mine, but there was this workaround thing where I didn't have to do it (and thus I didn't have to visit another branch that's three miles away). But doing it this way means they can't close the estate until I can confirm the check is deposited. I mean, I guess I could tell them to just close it. I do have the check. But if I lose it, or if there's some unforeseen issue, they'll have to reopen the thing and that'll be even more money. I think I'm just going to make the pointless drive and I'll bitch about it when it goes south.

Also if the name on the account matches the name on the check they tend to not care. If it's a bank issued check it might even have your address on it, which will match the address of your account, even better. Granted that's been my experience with sub-1k checks, no idea what might change with such a huge check, but I'd say just bring all the ID you can muster and go in and ask.

You don't need to show ID unless you're trying to cash the check, and even then they won't cash out a large check like that for more than what you have in your account anyways. You could just go drop it in a night deposit slot at your bank and it'll get credited to your account once it clears. Is this a check drawing from your dead dad's account or is it a cashier's check from the bank for the account balance or something similar? I'm just curious because if it's the former, who signed the check?

Looking at switching jobs to a new company in IT consulting. My present company pays salary. This new company would offer 20k more, but it's hourly. I haven't done hourly since I worked retail ten years ago -- is it any different in a white collar field?

As an IT type, I massively prefer hourly to salary. The only real advantage of salary imo is if you constantly have lots of doctor appointments or child care needs that you have to take an hour or two multiple times per week to handle, and my job gives me ungodly amounts of PTO so even that isn't worthwhile. I love not being asked to work an urgent job over the weekend unless they really, really want to pay overtime. With hourly, work time vs my time is clearly delineated. Salary, it's not as clear cut. regulargonzalez fucked around with this message at 06:41 on Feb 10, 2022 |

i went from hourly to salaried and much prefer it. i'm a software dev so it's about getting the work done, not the time it takes. it's nice because if i can bail as long as i get my poo poo done instead having to pretend to work to get my 8 hours in. i definitely put in under 40 hours a week. some days i might be online over 8 hours, but the overwhelming cause for that is because i dicked off (on the forums haha) when i should have been working the salaried job also pays me a lot more and gives way better benefits than my old one. i'm not sure if another 20k would make it worthwhile for me to switch but i'd def. have to consider it

I've had co-workers that went from salaried to hourly and reactions were all over the place. Some like it because they feel like they're getting paid exactly what they're owed. Some hate having to fill out times sheets and being nickled and dimed for things like bathroom breaks, phone calls, and having to pick kids up early form school.

A bit late to the trans question but this just came up. Yesterday I saw that a lady has her pronouns listed in the email signature. Like "Alice Jones. She, her, hers". I don't want to make any assumptions but if the signature wasn't there, I don't think there'd be any ambiguiuty about the pronouns. I've seen other cis people say that before too. Is this supposed to be helpful, does it help normalize choosing your pronouns or someting? Would it help if a bearded, bald guy introduced himself as "Hi I'm John. He/him/his"? Feels like that'd be weird, as if it's mocking it.credburn posted:That will be how I demand it cashed. Right into my duffel bag. I should clarify that while I'm hourly, I work from home half time and ultimately have as much "downtime" that I get paid for as a salaried equivalent employee, and my boss is also super chill about leaving an hour early if my poo poo is done while still logging full hours. If I was in the office every day and had a boss that was a stickler for hours worked, I'd probably prefer salary.

Yes it's a big thing these days and it's supposed to normalize putting your pronouns out there, normalize not assuming what they are, make it less stand-out-ish for e.g. a non binary person to put they/them out there so that people get their pronouns right, etc. FWIW the people I know who are trans have mixed reactions about it, with about half thinking it's a good thing. That of course is anecdotal and secondhand (I am cis and don't want to speak for them too much but I also value their opinions and don't want to leave them unsaid either), so I won't try to claim what the right or wrong thing to do is, but it's not cut and dry alnilam fucked around with this message at 16:14 on Feb 10, 2022 |
