I would believe radon poisoning though. Gas of that stuff does settle into the bottom of caves (and basements) and is very good at killing humans when inhaled.
Wait, is radon a bad thing? This is why I insist on lending any friends who buy a residence my radon monitor, and also the property in question has been demolished and radon testing/remediation is mandatory for new houses because New England is anywhere from an enormous amount of dirt on glacial bedrock down to bedrock just poking out through the dirt/lawn/etc.

There are a lot of radiation accidents that involve people just not knowing what they're dealing with. Goiania, Brazil is the obvious one, even though the "fact" that the security guard called out to watch Herbie Goes Bananas is almost certainly apocryphal and not at all true. I'm coming up blank on this one, but there was one witnessed but someone doing an A/T thread about pipeline inspection. I looked back and didn't see it in my post history in the relevant threads, but I trust that Phanatic will remind me of which IAEA report goes with this story since he has before. The title of that particular story was "The man whose rear end rotted off." It gets a bit gory when going over the details of stuff like, um, the part where a guy's rear end rots off due to radiation poisoning, just as a heads up. Apparently a Co-60 source looks surprisingly similar to a spring from a retractable pen.

That was also a great A/T thread and if anyone could find a link to it, I would sincerely appreciate it.

This one? IIRC, the 'something' is plutonium.

Imagine asking anyone involved whether they have any idea how close they were to a criticality accident and think about how much faster than usual you would be able to run once they said "no."

Dang. My Airthings is in our (basement) master bedroom and averages ~3.0. This is with an active mitigation system. I would not be able to sleep with your values. I also get paranoid because radon is heavy and concentrates near the floor and we have two cats who I’m sure don’t need superpowers or cancer.
