It may affect convictions, but I am not sure. Seems to me it's just that losing units makes them lose out.

Pretty sure losing guys is just a loss of XP for that battle for that guy. They should be treated as a resource that can be sacrificed to win the battle. It may be interesting if losing guys increases utility though or reduces morality, but I don't think there is any indication that is the case.

It also seemed like you can just infinitely grind the free battles so the loss of exp would mostly just be an inconvenience. On normal mode anyway

I am absolutely not sold on the combat at all and disappointed that the combat math is opaque. Especially with the upgrade system giving you choices of what stats to boost. How much is +1 Physical Defense going to matter? Is +5 Weapon Power more valuable than +1 Strength? Who knows!

The english VO was instantly noticeably bad IMO, but I don't consider it a major problem since they let you switch to JP without any rigmarole.

Overall I came away from the demo feeling like the package is quite comparable to three houses, with somewhat worse (at least definitely worse feeling) combat, seemingly quite a bit better story and art to my taste, and of course without the school stuff which would be a pro for some and a con for others. Probably lands in the reasonable people can differ zone

Not gonna judge the combat since it's incredibly early and literally like 3 battles not including the freebies. Especially if I assume this game will be LUCT length, and that game took a long while to get rolling in options.

Seems like maximum XP Lvl is 10. But I'm not sure if there are class changes or not, and there are 3 levels of weapons, so seems like a good amount of growth is allowed for each class so far. I am hoping for a large number of enemy trans-location options as well as looking forward to the turn order manipulation.

So far the basis I'd see to compare this and GoTshow is that they almost immediately make me dislike the royal blonde dude. "Let's see how many people we can kill and compete for score" gently caress off dude wasn't cute when gimli and legoman did it either.

TBF, GoT is just Dune but with an uninteresting setting.

There are class changes! You can check them in the encampment, a bit. It seems to be a straight line though, without branching options or anything.

Yes! I love not having to make choices, also makes for a better balanced game.

Few opinions:

Game of Thrones was good, well, the first season or two then downhill as D&D ran out of source material.
A Song of Ice and Fire was better, but last book was solidly meh and it’s been over a decade without a new book and that dumb old man will die before finishing the loving thing.
Dune is boring as piss, and I say that as someone who prefers SciFi over Fantasy settings.

ANYWAYS, the prologue demo (1st demo) is pretty cool as TRPGs go, but I kind of think managing 9 PCs at once is a bit excessive, looking at other TRPGs, they seem to cap out around 6. I also feel like it was lacking enough interesting abilities.

rogue girl can do stealth, but….how do I actually best utilize this?
How do you delineate properly if the buff is working?

Some of the characters were the beginning of being interesting, but the rest were “generic fire mage”, “generic ice mage”, “generic masked guy who is real strong but dies offscreen and totally will be back later with some kind of obtuse reason as to why he didn’t show up earlier” and so on.

I do think it’ll be interesting to see how the different stories relate, and what characters are unlocked by each path (I had unlocked some shaman character who can do lightning, also kind of tropey) but I hope each character has more abilities, like 5-6 more because having a more well rounded character who can do a bunch of class things matters more to me than having a large number of characters to control.

For example, in the battle where you can potentially burn down the town defending Glennbrook, you eventually fight the “generic big strong sword lady who likely will turn and join your party later in the story” and some of my guys had died because I hadn’t planned properly or “oops that character was within the AOE of burning down this house, RIP” but once I got it down to like, 5 characters, it was much easier because I just buffed the gently caress out of the shield guy who tanked the boss’ hits like a champ, especially since that sword lady was able to one-shot other people without much fanfare. Combat felt much tighter and more fun employing a “tank and spank” mechanic to the boss (tank aggros, everyone else wails on the boss)

It’ll be interesting to see if that was just a combat choice, or if you get some sort of benefit later by not having burned down the houses (honestly, the enemy NPCs were too spread out to really properly take advantage of using the burned down houses anyways, especially considering your dudes are all at the top of the hill, and the only people who could have blocked the passage ways to funnel them were the squishy mages with fire/ice walls who’d had to have booked it down there, in melee where they’ll die in two hits, so not worth it)

It’s also interesting the “quietus” thing, but I never felt I needed to use it.

edit: oh I almost forgot, the English VA was “okay” but nothing exciting. It does sound like Bernard? is Johnny Young Bosch in one of the trailers which was exciting, but then he didn’t sound like that in game, and I can’t find any voice actor credits anywhere. (the japanese trailers tell you up front who’s who)

I, for one, enjoy having more units on the battlefield than the typical FFT/NI-faire. 5-6 just doesn't quite allow for more intricate and tactical battles.

Yeah, I can put up with bad stories and character building if the strategy combat is good... but it isn't + it doesn't have any of the save/load options I'd want in a game like this. Glad they put the demo out, will probably finish it out just to see if maybe they buried a hook somewhere but looking more like a pass.

Occasionally 12, which feel a lot more claustrophobic and tense, in a good way. But most story battles were 9-10, and a lot of random battles were in the 6-7 range, and those always felt more perfunctory because you had a much smaller fraction of options available to you.

GreenBuckanneer

Ogre Battle 64 had the best tactical combat, imo, which was also limited to 5 members. Smaller parties, each with users that have tons of abilities to choose from, feels like better gameplay to me.

Hard choices, quicker battles, less faffing about with that “one archer in the back who isn’t able to kill anything on its own because if he goes into melee he dies in one hit, so you have to maneuver him around the field while the Big Boys do the heavy lifting and the archer can swoop in and killsteal for the xp” isn’t actually fun for me, it’s needless busywork.

Having 10-13 people in awakening sucked too, for similar reasons. You’re gonna have your “best team” which is most certainly under ten units of your favorite units, and everyone else who isn’t on that list is just fodder. Unless the game has a mechanic where you can powerlevel the weakest units up so that they’re viable, that’s how you get Overpowered Frederick On A Horse Who Just Does Everything like in Awakening.

One of the reasons I never got around to finishing 3 Houses, finishing a single battle was exhausting, followed by some downtime to run around and find the hidden objects and maybe someone had something interesting to say. And the game expects you to play it 3 times? lol

It does make me wonder if I’d like Langrisser, I tried the mobile version but that was meh, gachashit aside. I prefer my battles to be 15-30 minutes long, generally.

Not to say I didn’t enjoy the first demo (which is few battles and some story exposition of interesting things, about 5 hours maybe) but I can’t say I agree with having a lot of PCs

WrightOfWay

On the one hand, larger unit counts give you more opportunity to interface with the various positioning systems, on the other hand, large unit counts can potentially be very tedious in a game where generic enemy units die in 2-5 hits and counterattacking is limited to certain classes.

Yeah this game also has you squat on loot to pick it up.

I can’t remember but I swear there was some TRPG that the loot despawned if you didn’t pick it up in time, but I hate that poo poo too. They beat up the bad guys, let me just pretend they went around the map clearing the collectables afterwards.

I've enjoyed the battles up through the demo. Chapter 3 snowside was the one to put up the most clear challenge, mostly as I feel like I should have pulled back to make a wall and keep the baddies from swarming my squishies, but Randolph starts out a little ways out and surrounded so I try to pull into there and get him out.. That and I made things harder then they needed to be since I sold most of my hp pellets to buy weapon mats after steamrolling chapter 1 and 2.

I kinda regret playing the demo now I really want it right now but at least February is packed.

Shining Force let you have like 12 units out. But each unit could really only do a few things so it made sense.

I haven’t played any of the Disgaea games after the first one but I seem to remember having a lot of units and also extremely specific units like “blue mage who can only cast ice.” But I think Disgaea might be an outlier of the genre.

Again a very likpatous story
Finally got around to playing the demo but I only did the first battle, it seems pretty solid even if I did accidentally have Roland do nothing on one turn by screwing up my menu choices.

I know that the choices you make affect who joins and what happens in the story but I'm wondering if this is a game where you want to go hard on one route and just always pick that option in every circumstance, or if there's a benefit to choosing different responses and if it unlocks anything different.
