Binary Badger posted:It's not a big deal, the bottom cases on the M1 Airs are contoured to fit the heatspreaders on the logic board, and the 7-core GPU heat spreader is smaller than the 8-core for obvs reasons Is it that obvious if the 7 core has the exact same die as the 8 core? The 7 cores are just binned M1 chips with a core disabled. Physically they’re the same.

That is a bunch of bologna. I run a one-man manufacturing business and when I screw up I have to eat the cost. I don't forward the mistake on to the customer.

Idk if anybody here listens to/watches Moore’s Law is Dead, but the last episode’s guest is a former tech journalist-turned-manufacturing expert/consultant/whatever (I honestly forget the details) who lives and works in Taiwan. It’s kind of amazing how simultaneously ironclad and incredibly precarious that whole situation is, and not even because of stuff like China or geopolitics. Like all it takes is one historically bad typhoon or seismic event to hit say—the TSMC foundries and companies like Apple would be completely turbofucked. Apple’s entire silicon operation relies on TSMC cranking for them more or less nonstop, and nobody else currently has the ability to match TSMC on process size or production capacity. For all that Intel says that they’d love to manufacture Apple’s chips for them, Intel simply doesn’t have the ability or capability right now. It’s not like Apple’s sitting on a big pile of chips that they could put into devices for a year+.

Yeah it just seems like a supply chain micro-optimization that could make things harder... unless its same base part + you apply a different spreader / TIM to it?

When you buy NAND at Apple's scale, there are contracts, which means they probably won't pay anything extra because the price was negotiated long ago. The consequence to Apple is likely to be supply shortage.

How will Apple, notorious for razor thing margins on their SSD upgrades, ever cope with a 10% spike in NAND pricing? Also Apple doesn't buy WD/Sandisk NAND, they're contracted with Samsung.

Whether that's editing video, photos, writing documents, email, coding, watching porn, whatever. There's no way to feel buyers remorse if you do it that way. I mean, I guess if "having the new new" is what gives you happiness that's a thing, but it's a pretty frivolous thing. It’s simple. If you’re spending 3k on a mbp, why wouldn’t you wait 1 extra month to get the new one for the same cost. Don’t overthink it Personally I plan my upgrades well in advance. You bet your rear end I’m factoring in upgrade timelines into my schedule. It’s not fashion, its just smart planning. mitztronic fucked around with this message at 17:49 on Feb 12, 2022 |

lol this comes up every time. either you need a new laptop or you don't. you buy a new laptop when you need it, and you don't when you don't.if you can afford to wait 7 months to see what the new laptop looks like, you didn't actually need to buy a new one, you just wanted to (which is fine)

Laptop cadence being a bit unpredictable makes it a little easier to feel angst about this, but if you are buying something with predictable releases like an iPhone that evaporates. If you buy an iPhone every 3 years it doesn’t matter whether you get it in February, you’ll get the same number of days of use as someone who buys every launch window. It’s not actually that different for laptops. Buy a laptop, use it as long as possible, then buy the next one. The only real rule of thumb I’d advocate for MacBooks is unless you have a strong reason otherwise, get one of the stock models instead of trying to “future proof” with custom builds with more RAM or whatever. The jump in cost does not come back to you in resell value and upgrade costs are so high, you’re better off setting that money aside for the next all-round better machine.

Most folks I've seen just want some guidance as to what might be coming up, which seems appropriate given that there are still obvious holes that new products will be filling in the coming year. I think trying to hold off on a purchase to get a better value or something closer to what you want is a pretty smart thing to do.
